Difficulties adjusting from conflict to peace left them without sure
directions. Finally Duo found a job at H & G Salvage. Heero utilized his computer skills to process claim forms for Myers Insurance Agency. Neither job paid an adequate salary, however, their combined incomes allowed rent for a modest one-bedroom apartment, put food on the table and provide necessary essentials. Someone once said: "You can't live on love." Both ex-Gundam pilots were determined to prove that negative adage wrong. Inventive cash management afforded inexpensive quality time together. They'd cuddle on the sofa sharing popcorn while watching movies on basic cable television. Walks in the park were free. A single dip of chocolate ice cream was a dollar, fifty cents more bought Duo rainbow sprinkles. Weekdays a forty-five minute bus ride ferried Duo to and from work. The job was physically demanding. Most evenings he'd come home exhausted, yet still insisted on cooking dinner and helping with the housework. Although Heero made certain Duo ate properly and was adamant he got extra sleep on weekends, dark circles underscored his partner's stunning violet eyes. Regardless of his weary condition, Duo never complained. Heero was always offered a bright smile in the morning and a welcome home hug every night. Yes, the former God of Death was a master of duality. Despite a tragic childhood and the senseless insanity called war, Duo maintained an optimistic view of life. He laughed freely. Cried unashamedly. Warm caresses soothed Heero's soul. Fiery kisses enkindled passion so intense his lover begged for merciful release. "Each day is a gift." Duo stated with confident conviction. Each day Heero fell deeper in love. ****** February fourteenth. Walking home after work Heero paused at the Four Season Flower & Gift Shoppe to peer into the front window decorated with shiny red hearts and crepe paper cupids. A banner attached to the windowpane read: Show your sweetheart how much you care. Long stem roses $60.00 a dozen. With the realization the price was totally out of his range, Heero mumbled, "Sixty dollars would shoot a hole in our weekly budget." ****** Valentine's Day was Duo's favorite holiday. During the war he'd somehow managed to find a sheet of red paper and fashioned a Valentine card. Heero counted that unpretentious card with frayed edges among his most cherished treasures. Heero knew this day, set aside to celebrate love and lovers, mandated a token of gratitude for his partner whose commitment never wavered even when the whole world was against them. Duo Maxwell had indeed wrought a miraculous transformation. Heero was now independent, unencumbered by demands of duty. Steadfast love reaffirmed self-worth was not dictated by mission parameters. Persistent patience taught trust and freed the detached Perfect Soldier from solitary loneliness. ****** "May I help you?" a young woman with Beth on her nametag asked when Heero stepped up to the glass-enclosed jewelry case. "I'd like to purchase a Valentine's gift." "Perhaps a necklace?" Beth suggested. Heero mentally estimated the lowest cost item then shook his head "no". Beth offered an alternative, "Roses in red or pink are beautiful." "How much for one rose?" Heero wondered. "Five dollars." *Get paid on Monday. Pack my lunch tomorrow and Friday.* Heero thought to himself then dug into his pocket and counted out five dollars plus sales tax. "I'll take one red rose." "For someone special." Beth commented as she wrapped the flawless scarlet rose in white tissue paper and secured the packet with red satin ribbon. Heero smiled. "Very special." ****** Italian aromas wafted around the apartment. Heero took off his shoes, set them next to scuffed work boots, hid the floral surprise behind his back and entered the kitchen. "Hey baby." Duo greeted, "I was wondering where you were." "Needed to do something on my way home." Heero replied, accepting Duo's welcome home kiss. "Get washed up. Supper is almost ready." "I have something for you." Heero revealed the rose. Duo eyed the unexpected gift with inquisitive interest, "What's this?" "Happy Valentine's Day." Opposite the happy gleam in his lover's violet eyes, a teardrop shimmered down Duo's pale cheek. Heero used his thumb to wipe away the salty moisture. "What's wrong?" The last thing he wanted to do was make Duo cry. Duo locked watery eyes on Heero. "I don't have anything for you." "I didn't do this be upsetting." Heero apologized, "Being here with you is all I need. Please don't cry." Duo shook his head, "I'm sorry, I....." "I'll make you a deal." Heero negotiated, "Accept my Valentine's gift now and you can give me your gift in our bed tonight." Duo smiled. "Thank you my love." then seal the contract with a fiery kiss. ****** Loose hair cascading over his pillow, Duo rocked beneath his lover. Legs curled around Heero's waist and arms draped over strong shoulders, Duo arched his back meeting each centered thrust into his tight anal channel. "OHHH! YES! YES!" Duo announced his approaching climax encouraged by Heero stroking his rigid manhood. "Now lover." he implored as shivers tingled through his throbbing groin. Prompted by urgency Heero threw back his head, gritted his teeth and hit Duo's prostate right on target to trigger a forceful ejaculation. Shuddering from his own explosive orgasm, Heero followed his lover into the afterglow. A few moment's recovery, he eased his flaccid member out and snuggled down beside his soul mate. "I love you." Duo reciprocated the heartfelt emotion. "I love you more than anything in my life." "Someday I am going to buy you a thousand roses." Heero vowed as proof of how much he did indeed love Duo. Duo cuddled closer, "A thousand roses would never be as precious as this one rose." The pure symbol of simple devotion. ~ * ~
