Pairing: Heero and Duo, Duo + Relena (friendship)

Notes: Wanted to write a friendship fic for Duo and Relena. After all, they both shared impeccable taste in messy brown hair.

"Princess Night"

The paper felt grainy and rough on the tip of her nose but she pressed on until she felt the spine of the book pushed back. She inhaled deeply and the scent of romance printed on paper rushed toward her in a heady wave. Sighing into the book, she withdrew and tossed the book in a wide projectile toward her bed. It bounced once, twice, and dived off the other side of the bed.

Relena stood reflexively, meaning to run after the book but stop in her track after taking just one step from the loveseat where she had spent the last two hours. The muscles on her back protested and her eyes widened with recognition. Stepping back until the back of her legs touched the hard edge of the seat, she lowered herself slowly and dejectedly. A long, weary breath escaped her as she drummed her fingers on her knees. Pink tips of her bedroom slippers peeked from the hem of her bathrobe, and she suddenly wished she had said yes to Senator Elfrey’s son, or that young anthropology professor at her last visit to the state university, or even that stammering young man in her staff.

Chewing on her lower lip, she reached for the vid phone. Nodding slightly as if giving permission to herself, she punched in a series of numbers, and ran her fingers over the faded number keys while she waited.

“Relena?”

“Hey,” she smiled shyly, feeling conspicuous and naked. “Can you talk?” She whispered, noticing strands of red and brown hair straying from the shirtless young man’s braid. A slow heat crawled up her cheeks as thoughts of what she may have interrupted ran through her mind.

“I always have time for you, princess.” Duo slurred, gesturing elaborately and bowing before the vid screen.

Relena chuckled, loving the immediate ease he had put her in. “I hope I’m not inter..,” she started but was cut off with a wave of Duo’s hand.

“Lena,” he paused and fixed her a ‘you should know better’ look. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing really.” She averted eye contact but felt his gaze boring into her nonetheless. “Just, was feeling a little bored.” Relena stared down at her slippers again and kicked them off in a sudden rush of irritation. The color of her adolescence wasn’t quite her favorite anymore. People change, and the scenery outside the window shifts with time. Relena laughed softly and lifted her eyes to meet Duo’s, “and a little lonely.”

Duo placed his index finger on the screen where her nose would be and tapped gently. “You want me to call Heero? He’s down in the basement.”

“No, that’s quite all right. I called to talk to you, really.” She rushed to stop him. While she understood the choice he had made, and while she herself had grown to love his ‘choice’; it wasn’t always easy talking to Heero. Another residual color from her adolescence that didn’t feel right anymore. “Why is he in the basement? Everything all right?”

Duo laughed, “would you believe the basement is flooded again?” He threw a look over his shoulder and winked at her when her turned to her again. Relena smiled knowingly. Heero has a habit of fixing everything, or rather Heero has a habit of thinking that he could fix everything, but unfortunately, not all common household appliances and fixtures possessed the inner mechanics of a Gundam. That, coupled with Heero’s tendency of turning every problem into a three-pages long mathematical analysis was the reason why their sink remained clogged and their furnace remained off.

“Anyway, Heero’s refused to call a plumber, again, and he’s down in the basement with a sump pump. I’d say he’s having one hell of a good time, princess.” Duo’s voice drifted in and out as he tossed several looks over his shoulder.

Relena drew her knees to her chest and then rested her chin on her knees. It was bright behind Duo; all the lights in the house must have been turned on. She felt warm somehow.

“We’ll come over when he’s done.” He made a gesture with his thumb. “Another hour or so? And we could bring….pizza.” He dragged out the last word to taunt her.

She made a face as if she had heard something unsavory but straightened up soon after. “Duo, I didn’t call to have you come baby sit me.” She said ruefully.

Duo grunted and rolled his eyes. “Princess, I was thinking more of bringing over some B movies and watch them in your personal movie theatre.” His eyes widened with exaggeration. “I mean, nothing beats watching zombie gore on big screen!”

“Besides, have I mentioned that the house smells like a sewer right now?”

Relena laughed and her voice carried in her overly spacious room. “Duo,” she paused, “you are such an…..ass.”

“Relena, I think there’s hope for you yet.” Duo’s eyes gleamed with amusement.

A blurry figure of a man dashed across the room behind Duo, and then back again. The familiar shock of brown hair bobbed as he hurried along, yelling out instructions to Duo as he disappeared with an armful of tools.

Duo answered over his shoulder before turning back to her. “All right, the Sump King is a calling.” He held up his hands, slipping a yellow rubber glove on one, and tugging playfully at the cuff with the other. The rubber snapped loudly when he let go and the vid screen faded to a blank as he wiggled his gloved fingers at her.

Relena shook her head and stood with resolution. She has a sudden craving for four-cheese pizza, torn jeans, old sweatshirt, and a night with old friends. And sometimes, those were all she needed.
