"High Noon"

The arm he used for a pillow under his head was starting to feel numb. The sun shifted and climbed higher; golden sunlight shimmied through dense leaves and danced on his pale face every time the branches swayed to the noon time breeze. He squinted every time the light caught his eyes.

Down the hill, a shrill bell rang, and students of the academy flocked toward the classrooms in twos and threes. A small smile played on his lips: part defiance, part boredom, and he showed no signs of getting up from the cool, moist ground. The only time he moved was when his free hand slid down the middle of his chest. Long, slender fingers drew a line on silky bare skin and stopped just before the third button, which, unlike the two before it, remained in the buttonhole.

His mind wandered as his fingers stilled. His platinum blond hair spilled and fanned out on the grass. If he stay still in one spot he might one day sink into the ground. Grasses would grow through him or grow from him. Worms and tiny rodents might make homes out of him. He could be part of the earth and maybe he would finally feel like he belonged. He smiled again when he thought he felt the worms wriggling in his bones and unleashing the restlessness within him.

A tall man showed up without making the slightest sounds and eclipsed whatever blue sky and sunlight he may have enjoyed up until then. From the shadow Zechs peered but didn’t say a word.

“Did you think that I had forgotten, my dear Milliardo?” The tall man’s voice sounded like a whisper in dream, and Zechs smiled drowsily.

“You couldn’t even if you try,” he said quietly.
