The six girls inside with him piled out, giggling and carrying on like seniors in high school that had just graduated. Ironically, this is exactly what they were. The seven friends grabbed their beach gear and strolled down toward the water, arms linked, Duo in the center. "I really hope we'll meet some great guys," the girl directly to Duo's right, Kyra said, tossing her straight, glossy black hair over her shoulder. "I know," Duo instantly agreed. "All the guys in high school were total pricks." "Not to mention totally straight," the girl to Kyra's immediate right, Adriana, piped up. "I mean, what the hell's up with that? Aren't there any sweet lesbian guys around?" The beach had its usual mix of suntanners, volleyball players, dog lovers, and surfers. Duo's eye strayed inevitably to the surfers, enjoying their long, lean bodies as they controlled their boards. The waves were quite high today, and Duo found himself wishing once again that he could surf. Oh well. Maybe this summer was the summer for him. Out in the water, skimming the waves like a dolphin, Heero Yuy closed his eyes and enjoyed the thrill of being surrounded by conditions that could so easily kill him. What could be better than this? Beauty and danger, wrapped into a perfect combination? His board carried him into the shallows, and he glanced up to see a new group of girls stroll onto the beach like they owned it. They were probably high school seniors, newly graduated. Heero himself had graduated two years ago, but he was familiar with that look girls got about them when they were done with school. They were all what guys would consider drop-dead sexy, each wearing bikinis that showed off their considerable assets well. Except one. The one in the center was wearing cutoffs and a halter-top, and Heero realized she was not a girl at all. She was a boy. The most beautiful, stunning, desirable boy Heero had ever seen. He had long, long auburn chestnut hair pulled into a loose braid, and his eyes were violet. And those eyes were roving over the other guys surfing on the waves with apparent interest. Shit, shit, he's gay. He's gay and he's looking. Oh, you are so mine, gorgeous. Here, come on, look my way. I'm better than those wannabes. That's right, this way, just a little more When those eyes landed on him Heero quickly flipped his board and once more struck out toward the waves. Somehow he just knew the boy was still watching him as he plunged into a gigantic swell. It crested right above him, and a wall of water thundered down around him. For a moment he closed his eyes, feeling like the rest of the world had suddenly disappeared. The moment he broke out of the tube he began his most dangerous, eye-catching stunts. The tricks and moves that had him winning surf competitions over and over and over. Actually, Heero had never been to one he hadn't won. Out here on the water he felt like he was flying. There he is, Duo thought, breathing a little easier when the breathtaking boy appeared ahead of the gigantic wave. His eyes widened in amazement at the stunts the youth pulled, riding the wave as if he was born to. He is so hot. Damn, but have I ever seen anyone that hot? I bet he's straight. Look at him. He's a lady killer! "Duo," Kyra interrupted his thoughts, "come on, we need to put on sunscreen!" "And you totally burn," Lydia added. "Not like Adriana . . ." Adriana, one of the six, smiled. "Not my fault I was born with the skin for it. Ivy, Jade, let's go hit the water!" The three of them ran down the beach, leaving Kyra, Duo, Lydia, and the last girl, Syriith. Syriith made Duo sit down and began smearing thick sunscreen across his pale, smooth skin. He enjoyed her ministrations while keeping his eyes on that damn fine surfer. He was paddling out again, riding right into the gaping maw of another mammoth wave. Duo found himself holding his breath, praying for the boy's safety. He needn't have worried. The surfer flew out, seeming to float above the water. He made all the rest pale in comparison to his skill. "He is so hot," he murmured. "Who?" Syriith asked, leaning forward a little. Duo half turned his head, not quite taking his eyes off the surfer. "The one out there who makes the rest look like total amateurs," he replied, pointing. "Hmm," Syriith said, following his finger with her eye. "He's good looking. He looks like he's showing off." Duo sighed. "Probably for his girlfriend. No way a guy like him is gay and single." Heero cast a quick glance back to the shore. That gorgeous boy hadn't taken his eyes off him once. It made him very, very daring. He found himself attempting new, dangerous stunts all the time. Once he nearly lost his balance and wiped out. Nearly. As soon as I get into shore, gorgeous, you are mine. Mine, mine, mine. "Hey," Adriana said, tilting her head a little, "you see that really hot guy out there riding the waves like he owns them?" Ivy and Jade both looked. Jade, who habitually dyed her hair pink, frowned a little. "Yeah. He makes the other guys look like clowns. Look at him!" "What about him?" Ivy demanded, hands on her hips, golden blonde hair clinging to her shapely shoulders. "You like him?" "Love him," Adriana said, "but not for me. Don't you think he'd totally look fine alongside our favorite boy?" Her two friends blinked and studied him again. "Hmm," Jade said, tapping her lips, "I see what you mean. How should we grab his attention?" "We'll see if he came alone," Adriana said, grinning. "If he didn't," Ivy interrupted, "we'll just kill his girlfriend." "And if so," Adriana went on as if she hadn't heard, "we're totally snatching him up. After all, we can't play volleyball without one more player, can we?" She could see they caught her meaning. "I'll go start setting up the net," Ivy said at once, strolling back toward their other friends. "Jade, Adri, don't let him get away!" Adriana saluted. "Right! He's totally ours when he steps out of the water!" Syriith watched Ivy jog back to them as she smeared generous amounts of thick sunscreen into Duo's silken ivory skin. She loved doing this, because Duo had the most amazing skin. Flawless and perfect. She was a texture girl. "Kyra," Ivy called, "let's get the net set up, huh? Adriana found a guy she totally wants to drag into playing with us." "Who?" Duo asked, looking up at her as she and Kyra dug into their things for the volleyball net. Ivy pointed over her shoulder. "That hottie playing with the waves like they're just ripples on puddles." Syriith felt Duo tense beneath her hands. Understanding instantly, she flashed her black-eyed gaze Ivy's way. "Duo likes him," she explained calmly. In her best 'therefore, anyone else touches him and dies' voice. Ivy cast her a short, slightly nervous look. "That's good," she said, "because we think they look like they were made for each other." Duo relaxed, so Syriith did, too. Kyra laughed lightly. "I thought we all agreed not to play matchmaker for Duo?" she commented. Ivy shrugged. "Tell that to Adri. This was her idea, and I think Duo likes it." She winked at Duo. "Huh?" Syriith caught the edges of Duo's blush as he jumped up, busying himself helping Kyra with the net. Sighing, Syriith set up her beach umbrella and began giving her own skin similar attention. "Here," Lydia abruptly piped up, sitting behind Syriith. "Lemme help." Heero rolled gracefully into shore. His eyes instantly sought his current fixation and saw him playing volleyball with five of the seven girls he'd arrived with. The girls were hot, really, something even Heero saw. And he didn't even like girls. One of them had a very long tattoo of a phoenix across her abdomen, disappearing briefly into her bikini to resurface on her left thigh. The boy's shorts were so short they showed a tantalizing hint of the pale curve of his perfect ass. Heero licked his lips. I think I'm in love. Two girls were walking toward him, grinning appreciatively. "Hi," the one with short dark brown hair called. She had a heart tattooed on her pelvis. "You're amazing, you know? You do surf competitions?" Heero was about to walk by them when he realized they were also with that boy. He paused. "All the time," he said, deciding to stay civil. "Win every time." Not a boast. A fact. The girl giggled. Her pink-haired companion smiled. "I haven't seen you here before," Heero offered. "We don't usually come to this part of the beach," she admitted, "but we heard this is where the surfers hang." "Most often," Heero agreed. Willing her to get to the point. "Um," she said, doing her best to look coy. She did it well. "My friends and I have a net, but we only have seven players. You wanna come play with us?" Perfect. That would do nicely. Making sure not to look too interested, Heero nodded. "Sure. Just let me put my board up." "We're right over there," she said, pointing. Nodding to show he understood, Heero strode to the surf shack. Jade slapped her hand against Adriana's, and the two bolted back to the net. "Aces!" Adriana exclaimed. "He's so totally ours. Duo, you do your damnedest to look hot and cute and just . . . you." "And he's totally on our team," Lydia said. "Kyra, you don't mind switching over so he can play on the same side as Duo?" "Nope," Kyra said. "Here he comes. Ivy, you come over here with me and Jade and Adriana. Duo, you and Syriith and him and Lydia are the other side. Okay girls, no flirting. Well, not very much. We just have to find out if he swings Duo's way." Duo fidgeted, feeling disproportionately nervous as that stunning boy approached them. His golden skin glittered with moisture, his messy hair fell roguishly across his bright, cobalt eyes, everything about him screaming confidence and self-assuredness. "Hi," he said when he reached them. "Hi yourself," Kyra said, smiling. "I'm Kyra. This is Ivy, Adriana, Jade, Lydia, Syriith, and this" she paused almost imperceptibly, "is Duo." Duo's breath caught a little. Did the boy's eyes linger on him for just a fraction? "Heero," he said. "Nice to meet you, Heero," Kyra said. "You're on Syriith's team. You don't mind, do you?" Heero just shook his head, ducking under the net. For a moment he presented Duo with his back, and Duo couldn't help gasping out loud. "Oh, no way! This is so totally perfect!" He grabbed Heero's shoulders, admiring the tattoo. A large symbol of the yin and the yan sprawled across Heero's back. It presented a nice contrast for the tiger and dragon in the fore that reared at each other as though prepared to strike. Heero's heart leaped pleasantly when Duo's hands touched him for the first time. He couldn't help a tiny smile at the words. "Like that, do ya?" he murmured. "Like it!" Duo exclaimed. "I love it! It's just, I don't know, it's like you're saying you're just totally . . ." "Indestructible?" Heero supplied, charmed, enchanted, and ready to throw the boy down and ravage him. He is completely my type. "Just that!" Duo agreed, beaming. "So you any good at this game?" Heero shrugged. "A bit." The girls gave him the first serve. With Duo in front of him this gave him a perfect view of his ass. Such a cute ass. He wondered what it would feel like if he . . . and then . . . Blinking, he tossed the ball and smacked it over the net. Duo had a tattoo on his lower back, a blue and purple butterfly. The girls were good. Heero couldn't remember a single one of their names. He didn't care. He barely paid any attention to the ball, and his distraction caused him to miss several shots, but no one seemed to notice or care. That was nice. He couldn't stand obnoxious, competitive people. They just seemed to want to have fun. Heero just wanted to stare at Duo. Among other things. Diving, he managed to save the ball from hitting the ground just in time. The girl with the phoenix tattoo slammed it back over the net with a great hit. Duo leaped up to spike the ball; Heero noticed he was wearing a friendship anklet. Unfortunately, the girl who had the word 'playful' tattooed across her shoulders in calligraphy jumped at the same time. Collision was inevitable, and the girl got lucky. She landed on her butt. But Duo landed on his ankle. Heero heard him hiss in pain as he jumped to the boy's side, concerned. The girls clamored around, fussing like girls tended to do in a crisis. "Duo!" miss 'playful' cried, clasping her hands together. "Are you all right?" Gently pulling Duo's hand away from his ankle, Heero took it his own hands. Duo's skin was smoother than silk. "Does this hurt?" he asked, very gently rotating the small foot. Duo winced and made a soft sound, jerking away a little. "Yeah," he admitted. "There's ice in the shack," Heero said, moving to slide his arms under that perfect, slim frame. Lifting him was easy, and Duo was very light. "Don't want it to get swollen." Duo wrapped his arms around Heero's neck, and Heero tried not to focus too much on how right that felt. Kyra watched as the surfer carried their Duo to the
shack. She caught the eyes of her five friends, and they shared a
very triumphant grin. The summer was looking up!
