Convincing Heero – Chapter 14

By the time they arrived at the hospital, Une and Duo were the best of friends. It was difficult to be otherwise, when they’d been crammed together in one seat while Heero drove like a madman back to
Manhattan. They talked about clothes, a few mutual friends they’d discovered, and the Yuy family. Une agreed that it was very forbearing of Duo not to mention the quality of Heero’s driving, after he’d been so critical of Duo.

By the time they found their way to the maternity level, Noin was already settled in a birthing room, Zechs had gotten over the first stages of panic, and Odin was patting a pocket full of cigars.

“She’s in the early stages,” Takako explained to them in the corridor. “Company is good for her.”

Heero strode straight through the door, but Duo hung back. “I don’t want to intrude,” he said to Takako.

“This is no intrusion. This is family.” Takako cocked her head. “Are you uneasy with childbirth?”

“Oh no. I couldn’t be, after I’ve written so many.”

Heero poked his head back out. “How’d you research that, Maxwell?”

“I did rounds with an obstetrician.” Duo’s dimple winked out. “And found a few mothers-to-be who didn’t object to having me hang around during labor and delivery. Have you ever seen one?”

“No.” Heero’s eyes changed. Just like a man. “They, ah, show us films, just in case, but I’ve never been at ground zero.”

“It’s pretty great.” Duo laughed, perfectly able to read Heero’s thoughts. Don’t worry. I’ll hold your hand.”

They passed the time in the big, airy birthing room telling stories, giving advice, joking with Zechs once Treize and Relena arrived with Noin’s things. Mariemaia was happily settled in with Zechs’s cook, Rashid, so there was little to do but wait.

When Noin felt like walking, they took turns leading her around the corridors, rubbing her back, making small talk to take her mind off the discomfort between contractions.

“I can see your mind working,” Heero murmured to Duo. “ ‘How can I use this?’ “

“It’s ingrained.” Duo murmured his thanks when Heero passed him his cold drink. “Your family,” Duo said, glancing around the room. “I’ve never known anyone like them. My parents—they’d be appalled to be
expected to take part in something like this.”

“It’s our baby too.”

Duo smiled and lifted a hand to Heero’s cheek. “That’s what I mean. You’re all very special.”

“I’m glad you’re here.” As Heero leaned over to kiss Duo, Odin slapped him on the back. “Your sister will be some time yet,” Odin said, with a twinkle in his eye. “Go take this pretty lady for a walk, steal some kisses.”

“That’s an order I can follow.” Heero reached for Duo’s hand and pulled him to his feet. “Come on, let’s get some air.”

By the time they came back again, Heero had taken his father’s order to heart. Duo’s head was still spinning when they walked past the waiting room. It was Heero who spotted Relena, pacing and smoking in the smoking lounge like the cliché expectant daddy.

“How’s it going, kid?”

“It’s been an awfully long time.” Relena’s hand shook a bit as she lifted the cigarette to her lips. “I mean, Une was only in a couple of hours for Marie. It’s getting really intense, and Noin kicked me and the camera out. How come they don’t do something?”

“I don’t know a lot about it,” Heero mused. “But I think babies come when they’re ready.”

“It’s only been a little more than six hours.” Duo moved in to soothe, touched that Relena should have such deep concern for her sister-in-law.

“Feels like six days,” Zechs commented as he staggered in. He plucked the cigarette from Relena’s hand and took a deep drag. “She’s swearing at me. I know what some of those names are now, even if they
aren’t in English.”

“That’s a good sign,” Duo assured him. “It means things are moving along.”

“She swore at the doctor, too.” With a sigh, he passed the cigarette back to Relena. “But she didn’t take a swing at him.”

“If she missed,” Heero commented, “she must be in really bad shape.”

Wincing, Zechs rubbed his shoulder. “She didn’t. I’d better get back.”

“Let’s go give him some support,” Heero began, but then he spotted a woman rushing off the elevator. “Sylvie!”

“Oh, Heero!”

Duo watched the woman fly into the waiting room, auburn hair flowing. There was concern in her eyes and laughter on her lips as she swung into Heero’s arms.

“Hee-ro, how is Noin?”

“Swearing at her doctor and punching Zechs.”

“Ah.” She relaxed instantly. “That’s good. Relena.” She held out a hand for hers. “Don’t look so worried. Your niece or nephew will be along soon. Steve is parking the car. We were going to leave the children, but they were so disappointed, we brought them.”

Relena brightened a bit. “I’ll go help Steve with the kids then.”

“He’ll appreciate the help. Heero, where’s Noin?”

“I’ll take you. Oh, this is Duo.”

“Duo?” Sylvia turned, one hand still on her brother’s arm. Of course, she’d heard about Duo. West Virginia might be a fair distance from New York, but family business traveled fast on phone wires. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”

“That’s all right. You’ve got a lot on your mind.” And then Duo said the first thing that came to his. “What fabulous genes you all have.”

Sylvia’s brows lifted. Then, below them, her eyes lit with laughter. “Noin said I would like you. I hope we have time to talk before we leave town. I’m sorry to rush off.”

“Don’t worry about it. I think I’ll go to the cafeteria, rustle up some food for this group.”

Three hours later, Duo had delivered sandwiches and coffee, bounced Sylvia’s youngest daughter, Katie, on his knee and introduced himself to Steven Kim and helped him entertain his very cranky son.

As time dragged on, Duo added his support when Treize pressured his very tired wife to rest in the waiting room, took a few minutes to interrogate some nurses to help him beef up some hospital scenes and soothed Heero’s nerves as his sister’s labor reached the final stages.

“It won’t be much longer.”

“That’s what they said an hour ago.”

They were standing in the waiting room. Heero refused to sit. After a yawn and a good stretch, Duo wrapped his arms around Heero.

“She’s fully dilated, and the baby was crowing. The last glance I had
of the fetal monitor showed a really strong heartbeat. A fast one. I think it’s a girl.”

“How do you know so much?”

“Research.” Duo settled his head on Heero’s shoulder. “I was figuring earlier that I’ve delivered twelve babies, including one set of twins. In a manner of speaking.”

When Duo’s voice slurred, Heero tipped up his chin. “You’re asleep on your feet, Maxwell. I should have sent you home.”

“You couldn’t have pried me away.”

No, that was true, Heero realized. It was just one more aspect to Duo’s beauty. “I owe you.”

“Then pay up.” Duo lifted his mouth, sighing into the kiss.

“Takako.” Though he’d enjoyed watching his brother-in-law, Treize shot to his feet when he saw his in-laws in the doorway.

“We have a new member of the family.” There were tears in Takako’s eyes and in Odin’s as he stood with his arms tight around his wife.

“What is it?” Relena and Heero demanded together.

“You will come and see. They will bring the baby to the glass in a moment.”

“Noin is resting.” Odin dashed away a tear. “You will kiss her good
night soon.”

They trooped out together, to wait by the nursery window for the first glimpse.

“I’m an aunt,” Relena said to no one in particular, wonder coloring
her voice. “Hey, there’s Zechs.” Relena kept her nose pressed against the glass as her brother walked forward, holding a tiny bundle. The bundle was squalling, and Zechs was grinning from ear to
ear.

He held the baby up. Atop the curling black hair was a bright pink bow.

“It’s a girl,” Heero murmured, and held Duo hard against him. “She’s
beautiful.”

“Wow” was the best Relena could do. “Oh, wow.”

Treize was whispering something to Une that had her nodding and wiping away tears. Behind Heero, Sylvia shifted Katie in her arms and turned to her husband. He had one hand on their oldest daughter’s shoulder
and his sleeping son lay curved in the other.

“Every one is a miracle.”

Steve bent his head to kiss her damp cheeks. “Just say the word anytime you decide you’d like another miracle of our own.”

“I am a man blessed.” Odin grabbed the closet body. It happened to be Duo’s, and he found himself whirled in a circle. “One grandson and now four granddaughters.” He tossed Duo up. He came down laughing,
gripping Odin’s shoulders.

“Congratulations, Grandpa.”

“It’s a good day.” Odin reached in his pocket. “Have a cigar.”
