Chapter Six: Damn Woman

I didn’t lie. I willfully participated in a campaign of misinformation.
--Fox Mudler

(Wufei’s POV)

That damn woman was at it again.

I glared at the screen, wishing I had Relena in front of me so that I could beat on her until I felt better. Or maybe I could just strangle her a little bit…grrr. I was sitting in front of the security cameras, watching as she had an interview with the evening anchor in her personal study. It had started out with politics, but of course they were women and no pair of women can stay on just one topic.

<I don’t suppose you’d care to mention names, Vice Minister?>

Relena smiled demurely. It’s a sickening expression on her. <I can’t possibly do that. Security issues, you understand.>

<Not really, no. Unless your lover is shy?>

<A little. He prefers to stay in the background.>

Oh great. Did she have to say that?! Right now she was tossing around enough hints that the media would surely latch onto Heero at some point or another. I was going to have to break this up before she gave out too much information.

I made it to Relena’s office in a minute flat, took three seconds at the door to regain my usually calm expression, then politely knocked and entered without any invitation. “Excuse me, Vice Minister, but there is a call for you. It’s urgent.”

Relena glared at me, knowing full well there was no call. She turned her polite smile back on for the anchorwoman. “I am sorry to be cut short like this.”

“It’s quite alright, Vice Minister. Thank you for your time.”

Security came to play escort for the woman and her crew. I bided my time until the door closed behind them, then leveled a Death Glare at the annoying blond. “Relena, this has to stop! He isn’t your lover, your boyfriend, or even a potential crush!” And he never would be, either, because he was mine.

Relena idly buffed her nails against her shirt. “Really? That isn’t what the media thinks.”

“Stop playing games, Relena. I promise you, this isn’t one that you can win.”

She slapped her hand down against her desk, leaning on it and trying to cut me to shreds with her eyes. “You think you’ve won, that he’s yours. Your relationship with him is disgusting! Just like Winner and Barton’s!”

I’d never seen anyone that loved like Quatre and Trowa. Their love was something one usually found in fairy tales, or movies. “That’s your stupid opinion, Relena, and you are entitled to it. Frankly, I’m not interested in your views. I simply want you to leave Heero alone.”

“So its Heero now, is it? Not ‘Yuy’?”

Damn. When had I stopped calling him by his last name? Of course, the intimacy was certainly understandable considering that we spent more time in each other’s arms than just acting like friends. I was tired of arguing with her, and walked up to exchange her glare nose to nose. “Last warning. I’m pissed at you already for the stress you’re putting him under. Don’t make me lose my temper.”

“I am a member of Parliament, one of the Peacecraft family. You are a simple Preventer. You can’t do anything to me.”

The smile on my face was cold and sharp. “I am a child of the Dragon Clan, Relena Darlian. I am not ‘simply’ anything.”

By the time I got back to our room, the news had already spread to the tabloids. Heero was past the point of getting angry at such things. He was staring at the television with his fingers pressed to his temples and a resigned expression on his face. “How long will it take before this one fades?”

“Three weeks at the very least,” I snarled. “That’s it, I’ve had it! She must have called a tabloid reporter once I left the room. Damn, why didn’t I consider that?”

“Wufei, what are you talking about?”

Ah, so it’s his fault. Heero had started calling me by my first name—that’s why I was doing it too. Well, now that I have someone to blame… “I’ll explain later.” Digging out my phone, I hit 4.

<<Winner speaking.>>

“Quatre, I need a favor.”

<<Certainly. Would it have anything to do with the fact that Relena is secretly engaged to Heero? Or does it have to do with Relena being pregnant with her lover’s child and Heero is probably the father?>>

I groaned. “Dammit. Just how…?”

<<My secretary keeps me updated on the gossip. She was nearly falling out of her chair on some of these, she was laughing so hard. So? How are you planning on getting back at Relena for this?>>

“I want you to run an ad in all of the newspapers you can.”

<<…and what will this ad say?>>

+

(Heero's POV)

Since Wufei wouldn’t tell me what he was planning with Quatre, I did some snooping on my own. His smirk at the morning paper had been rather obvious, in my opinion, so I flipped over to the classified section while he was in the shower and scanned through the ads until I stumbled across something…interesting.

****1972 T-Top Charger with Go-baby-Go ether button. Mint cond., $5000 Call anytime, financial troubles must sell quickly. 792-735-3623.****

It was the number that caught my attention—Relena’s cell phone number. Oh no he didn’t. A mint condition Charger for $5,000? She’d be getting calls from everyone in the city, maybe even outside the city! For weeks. Despite myself, I started chuckling.

“I take it you found the ad?” Wufei’s polite tone clashed against the mischief sparkling in his eyes.

“You’re evil,” I told him in pure admiration. It takes a certain level of genius to think things up like this—either that, or creativity. I love creative minds. They’re so much fun to be around.

He shrugged at me, still trying to subdue a smirk. “If she wants to fight with the media, that’s fine by me. She just has to realize that it’s a tool that can be used by anyone.”

I stood up and caught him by the waist, pulling him closer so that I could give him a reward for being so devious. He groaned and pressed into me as the kiss deepened.

Okay, so maybe I just wanted to kiss him.

(Wufei's POV)

In the end, the calls for the Charger didn’t stop until Relena bought a new cellphone. I watched her make phone call after phone call, or write one email after another to let people know that her cellphone number had changed. When Lady Une had been notified of this, she had actually sent me an email congratulating me on my move. I love dealing with intelligent people.

Relena figured it out by the second day. She kept giving me Death Glares.

“You’re smirking again,” Heero observed beside me.

“Just thinking over the Charger Incident,” I answered smugly. I unlocked the bedroom door and went inside, tossing my uniform jacket on a chair as I went in. Ah…twelve hours with no Relenas. Beautiful idea. It was a Saturday morning, too, which made it even better. “Heero, let’s go out and do something. I’m tired of being cooped up here.”

He nodded in ready agreement. “We could take the bikes out.”

I lit up in anticipation. We both had bought sleek racing bikes just after the war ended, using them as our main means of transportation. I barely had time to ride it most days. “Good idea.”

We quickly exchanged uniforms for leather pants, comfortable tank tops and leather jackets. Even if we had the day off, we still exercised some caution in getting down to the garage. Relena wouldn’t hesitate in trying to monopolize our time.

Finally, though, we were free. I could feel the wind battering me, the speed and purring of a motor between my legs, and Heero was riding right beside me. I was grinning in sheer exaltation of being out, and free to ride wherever I wished. Ancestors, this felt good!

The countryside in Sanc was beautiful, reminding me sharply at times what it had been like the first day I landed on Earth, two years ago. Heero and I played a light game of tag on the winding road, exercising a careful disregard for any posted speed limits.

Heero signaled that he was low on gas and hungry after a long ride through the countryside. Since we were near a little mom and pop gas station, I flashed him a thumb’s up and pointed to it. That would serve our needs beautifully.

We pulled up to the tanks at a coast. “I’ll gas them up. Go get something to eat.”

“What do you want?”

Hm…what sounded good… “Roast beef sandwich and an orange juice.”

“Hn.” He put the bike on its kickstand and walked into the store.

Damn, he really does look good in leather. Those pants especially molded to every curve…wait, I was supposed to be doing something. What was it?

Oh. Right. Putting gas in the bikes.

When Heero came back several minutes later, he had a very unhappy look on his face. “Wufei, we have a problem.”

Heero’s only said that to me once before, and that was when he figured out that Libra was heading straight for Earth. You can understand why I started to panic. “What happened?”

“Relena has put forth a bill in front of the senate to make same-sex marriages illegal.”

“…what?” I hissed. Great gods! What did that idiot think she was doing?! I snatched my cell phone out of my pocket and quickly called Trowa.

<Barton.>

“Trowa, have you heard the news about Relena’s recent stupidity?”

<I’m assuming you’re talking about that bill she’s put in front of the senate.>

He sounded really pissed. Considering the fact that he and Quatre are engaged, and had planned on getting married in a little over a month, I can’t blame him. Hell, I’m pissed and I’m not engaged to anyone! “Yes. Does it have a chance of being passed?”

<Unfortunately, it might. Quatre is pulling every string he’s got right now but…he’s also wearing a path in the carpet.>

Quatre only paces when he’s worrying about something. “Right. Tell Quatre not to worry, we’re going to go kill her and put her out of all our miseries.”

Trowa gave me an amused snort. <I almost wish you would. Can you give us any idea on why she’s doing this now?>

I hesitated and looked at Heero, placing my hand over the mouthpiece of the phone. “He wants to know if we have an inkling on where Relena is coming from.”

Heero held out his hand and I handed the phone over to him without protest. “Trowa? Yeah, I know. And I know why. It’s because Wufei and I are together.” His face softened into an almost smile and he mouthed to me ‘Quatre is demanding details.’

I rolled my eyes. Of course he would demand details. “Tough, he isn’t getting any.”

“Winner, stop talking, I’m not telling you all of that. If you must know, Relena has walked in on us a few times…no, not that kind of walked in on. We were just snuggling, nothing serious. But it’s enough to tell her where she stands, and she’s not happy about it.” His face darkened. “I’ll deal with her. Hn. Yuy, out.”

I accepted my phone back, replacing it in my pocket. “Back to the palace?”

“Yes.”

If I hadn’t known better, I would have said that Relena was just waiting for us to show up. I stayed near the doorway as Heero stalked all the way in, leaning over her desk with a glare so hot I was amazed she didn’t just melt.

“What the hell do you think you’re playing at?” Heero snarled venomously. Even Relena flinched back a little. “If you’re angry with me, or Wufei, fine that’s your prerogative. But don’t you dare hurt other people just to get back at me.”

With a huff she drew herself up haughtily. “It’s wrong,” she bit off curtly.

“Wrong? Grow up, Relena. You’re not fifteen anymore. Gender doesn’t make a difference to the heart. Aren’t you the one that keeps saying we shouldn’t be prejudiced towards each other?”

Relena ground her teeth and rose from behind her desk to stare right into Heero’s face. “It’s wrong. Two men being sexually attracted to each other is WRONG.”

“Is that what’s really bothering you? Or is it the fact that I want Wufei more than I want you?”

Ouch. Dammit, Yuy, are you trying to stir her up even more?

Relena looked like she had bitten into a sour lemon. “The bill I proposed is not based on my emotions—”

“Bullshit,” he snapped back.

“Don’t you dare talk to me like that!”

“I will never forgive this, Relena.” Heero leaned in closer, eyes narrowed slits. “By doing this, you are hurting my family and I will not stand for it. The only thing that has kept Quatre and Trowa alive and sane through the war was each other, and you’re trying to tear that kind of happiness apart. I won’t let you. I’ll kill you before I let you hurt them.”

“You’ve been threatening to kill me for two years,” she responded with arrogant disbelief.

Heero’s hand whipped out the gun on his back and without hesitation fired into the wall right near her head. The sound ricocheted in the room, making even me jump a little in surprise.

Relena shakily collapsed into her chair, eyes wide on his face.

As entertaining as this was… Heero had an ‘omae o korosu’ look in his eye. I considered finding something else to do briefly in another room—just long enough for him to shoot Relena and hide the body somewhere. Relena would make a marvelous corpse. It was a lovely fantasy, until my mind reminded me that I would have to do paperwork on it. Just how much paperwork would be involved in letting one’s partner ‘accidentally’ kill the Queen of the World?

Too much.

Damn. Ah well. Being an adult meant facing reality, I supposed. I laid a restraining hand on Heero’s arm and murmured in Mandarin (which he spoke fluently and Relena didn’t) “You can’t kill her.

“Hn.”

That wasn’t the ‘yes’ kind of hn. I tried again. “Think of the paperwork.”

He gave me a sardonic twitch of an eyebrow. “Is that the best reasoning you can come up with?”

“Well, on spur of the moment, at least.” I considered for a moment before adding, “You’d have to deal with Une as well.”

That apparently was a valid enough reason, because he relaxed and put his gun away. The look didn’t leave his eyes, however. I’d better get him out of here before he decided that dealing with Une was a fair trade off.

“Relena, cancel the bill,” I ordered quietly. “Because next time, I won’t stop him. I feel the same way on this matter.”

“Y-you can’t kill me.” Her attempt at looking unafraid failed miserably. “They’ll imprison you.”

“You’re assuming they’ll be able to prove it was us,” I purred back silkily. “Now call and cancel the bill.”

Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely pick the phone up. It took six tries for her to dial in the right phone number. However, she cancelled the bill as we watched.

“Good. Now, Heero, shall we finish our ride?”

He nodded shortly and led the way out of the room. I called Trowa as we walked out of Relena’s office. “Trowa? Don’t worry about that bill. It’s been cancelled.”

<Really? How did you pull that one off?>

“Actually, it was all Heero’s doing.”

<…she’s still alive, right?>

“Unless she’s had a heart attack in the past two minutes, which, I grant you, is completely possible.”

<Something tells me I don’t want to know the details.>

“You’re a wise man,” I agreed dryly.
