Chapter Two: Declaration of War

In friendship your heart is like a bell, struck every time your friend is in trouble.
Henry Ward Beecher

(Wufei's POV)

…Wing falling toward the sea, Aries closing in all around, a Leo trying to hold me down, Nataku lend me your strength I can’t lose him—“HEERO!”

“Shh. I’ve got you.”

Someone was holding me tightly, hands stroking over my hair and down my back. A cold chill was over my skin and I shivered hard, grabbing onto the warm body in front of me in desperate violence. For a brief eternity I just clung, letting the memory fade from my mind, anchoring the present with the person holding me.

He held me firmly, hands still soothing and warm, spreading comfort wherever he touched me. “Okay?” he murmured gently against my ear.

I nodded weakly against Heero’s shoulder. “Sorry.”

“From what you said, I think you were remembering the last mission we were on together.”

“Yes.” I relaxed, looking up into his eyes. They were tight with concern, hands still on my back to keep me in place. “That one was…too close.”

“I remember.” A long searching look over my face seemed to answer something for him, and he twisted around until he was under the covers with me. Before I could quite figure out his intentions, he had coaxed me back onto the bed and spooned up against my back. “Go to sleep.”

During the war, when the nightmares had been too much, we usually turned to each other for comfort. It was normally Duo or Quatre though, that cuddled in with us. Having Heero wrapped around me was a different experience entirely. It felt much safer with him than it had with anyone else—after all, I knew for a fact that he could slay my demons without blinking. Relaxing completely I snuggled in a bit closer and let my eyes fall closed.

“…will you get out of here before you wake him up?!”

Out of habit I kept up my pretense of sleeping even as Heero’s voice hissed in my ear. And I was not at all surprised at who answered him.

“Heero, I need to speak with you. I don’t want to wake him up either—”

Yeah, I just *bet* you don’t.

“—so will you please come out in the hallway so we can talk?”

“No.” Heero’s voice was adamant. “I’m not leaving him. Go away, Relena.”

I was rather irritated with the woman for horning in on my time with Heero. And for waking me up. And for just being alive in general. How did she even know that he was in my room to begin with? I cracked open an eye to see her glaring at me, and groaned. “Why is she here?”

Heero soothed a hand over my stomach in a small circle. “She wants to talk to me.”

“Ha.” Grumbling under my breath, I turned to face Heero, hiding a smirk. Playing with the girl’s mind was the least I could do to pay her back for being such a thorn in my side. I pressed my chest against my bedmate’s, wrapped an arm around his waist, threw a thigh over his, and nuzzled my way under his chin. “My Heero. Not sharing.”

Judging from the slight jerks in Heero’s chest, he was fighting the impulse to laugh. I knew that my special brand of revenge would tickle his humor.

“You—you—ohhhhh!” Relena stomped her foot, fuming. “GET AWAY FROM HIM!”

I almost jumped off the bed when Heero brushed a kiss over my temple. “Relena, you’re not doing any good here. I’ll talk to you later.” His voice added a distinct ‘Maybe. If I feel like it.’

*SLAM!*

I peeked over my shoulder to see that she was gone, sighing in relief. Good she was go— “Oww!” I rubbed at the spot on my butt where Heero had pinched me, glaring at him.

“You are worse than Duo sometimes,” Heero told me bluntly.

“I don’t like waking up to a Relena in the room. Relenas are evil and an injustice. They should be eliminated.”

“Too bad it’s your job to protect her.”

“It’s a moral dilemma,” I agreed sourly. “What time is it?”

“Seven.”

I groaned, sighed, and rolled out of the bed to head for the shower.

For two days, we were blessed with the spectacular lack of Relena’s company. My letting Duo in at the dead of night so that he could paint the Pink Monstrosity probably had something to do with that. I have to admit, the paint job was a definite improvement. It was now black, like most limos would be…but Duo had added bright green racing stripes down the center and a large “02” on either side of the fender. Relena had a fit when she saw it…I know, because Heero and I were watching her through the security cameras. I made a copy of the footage and sent it to Duo. Knowing his sense of humor, he would thoroughly enjoy seeing the results of his handiwork.

Another part of it was probably my light flirtation with Heero in front of Relena when she walked in and disturbed my sleep. I hadn’t really expected Heero to join in like that. Hm. I wonder if he’s bi or…no, actually, that was too much information and I shouldn’t really go there. I didn’t have time to think about this anyway, I had to get into my uniform and be ready to go to that bloody reception in twenty minutes.

Opening the door, I tossed my jacket onto the chair near the dresser—what in ancestor’s name was that smell?! Taking another sniff, I wrinkled my nose in distaste. It was like a whore’s boudoir in here. Carefully sniffing, I tracked it to my bed, where an empty perfume bottle and note were lying innocently on the covers. The bottle was obviously a cheap knock-off of something more expensive, and the aroma certainly confirmed it. Snatching up the note, I read it through, feeling my blood pressure rise as I did so.

~Since you act like a whore, you might as well smell like one.~

That bitch! I crumpled the note in my hand, seething. Oh, I would get her back for this.

The door snicked open behind me. I whirled to see Heero walk in, his nose wrinkling slightly in distaste.

“Relena,” I snarled in answer to his inquisitive look. “She dumped a bottle of cheap perfume on my bed.”

“I’m almost afraid to ask…why?”

I tossed the crumpled note to him, watching silently as he read it through. His face steadily darkened, mouth tightening. “I see.”

“This means war,” I whispered venomously.

It took a bit of thought, but I finally came up with something that even Duo would be proud of. I snuck into her bathroom and read the labels on the back of her shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo was a lost cause for what I had in mind…but the conditioner was the stay-in kind, with no rinsing involved.

Perfect.

With precise movements I removed the conditioner from the shower, placing it on the counter. I opened up the packet of hair bleach, opened the conditioner bottle, then combined the two. Once I had the top back on the conditioner bottle, I shook it well so that it would be mixed, then placed it dramatically in the exact spot it had been sitting in.

I took great care in gathering up any evidence of my presence there, then snuck out quietly. As soon as I was out of range of the security cameras around her bedroom I flicked my radio on. “Heero, turn the cameras back on.”

//Copy that. Relena’s coming now, you’d better duck into our room.//

Damn! I bolted for our room and dove inside, closing it carefully to make no sound. I listened as her footsteps passed, stopped outside, then retreated behind a closed door. “That was close.”

//Get up here.//

“Coming.” I made my way to the main security room where Heero was sitting. He had insisted on helping me get revenge. Relena’s little note had angered him as much as it angered me. I let him handle the security cameras while I did the dirty work—and of course, we could both watch as our practical joke was realized.

The security room was one long wall of monitors and equipment, with only a few chairs scattered about inside for people to sit in. Heero was casually watching the monitor to the main bedroom area. Relena knew that her bedroom had a camera in it, so thankfully did NOT change in her room. I had no desire to see Relena naked. Ugh.

I joined him in front of the camera, checking the time. Relena was a creature of habit, and usually showered after a long formal engagement like this one. It’d been about ten minutes since she had gone into her room, and we didn’t expect her to see any results for at least another hour.

I pulled out a book, Heero turned to his laptop, and we settled in to wait.

[An hour later]

A casual glance at the monitor showed definite signs of progress. “Yuy.”

He looked up, a slow smile spreading over his face as he studied Relena’s image. Her honey-blonde hair was definitely not honey-blonde anymore. The lower half of her hair was turning white, and it wasn’t an even color, either. There were huge blotches of white, and other areas of uneven natural color. Oh now this was perfect.

Relena was focused on her TV. She hadn’t brushed her hair out, however, and she always did that in front of a mirror. I straightened, watching avidly. “Turn off the TV,” I urged her softly, gleefully. “Nothing you want to watch, just turn it off and go look in a mirror…”

“Wait for it,” Heero murmured beside me.

A minute ticked by, then Relena rose and crossed leisurely over to her vanity.

I was nearly beside myself in impatience. “Look *into* the mirror, you stupid blonde!”

“Wait,” Heero hissed at me, eyes glued to the monitor.

She sat down, picked up her brush, then started pulling it through her hair in long strokes. A part of her hair came over her shoulder so she could reach it better…then her eyes fixed on the long portion of hair in view, widening in horror… //NOOOOOOOO!!! How did this *happen*?!//

I slammed a fist down on the table in victory. “HA! Take that, you stupid woman!”

Heero and I started laughing quietly as she frantically snatched up a hand mirror and looked at the back of her head at all angles.

“Do you think she’ll figure it out?” Heero wondered idly.

“She might.” I had my doubts, though.

“Are you going to tell her?”

I turned a Look on him that stated quite plainly that he was delusional.

“Good. Let’s copy this over and send it to the other three.”

I nodded for him to do the honors, sitting back and wearing my ‘justice has been served’ expression. I had to wonder though. How long would it take for her to figure it out? It might take her a few days. And of course she’ll take more showers during those days…I smirked evilly.

“Wufei.”

“Yes?”

“Contain yourself.”

“I am,” I assured him.

“Hn.”

Heero doesn’t believe me.

He’s a smart man.
