Author’s Notes: You know those dreams that you keep dreaming over and over again for weeks? The ones that don’t go away until you write them down? Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. I passed the idea by one of my betas, to see if it was worth putting on paper. Her response was “Write it. NOW.” So I wrote it. The rest is…ah, what follows after my insane notes.
Just as a warning, this thing will be LARGE. Schedule in time to read it.

Feedback is my diet…and I’m getting pretty lean so send me something to munch on, okay?

Flames will result in me tormenting you for your inability to read warnings. And I’m good at tormenting. Just ask the boys.

"Standing Outside the Fire"

Chapter Epilogue

Life is mind over matter. If I don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
Garfield

This time, I had insisted on being the one to ring the gong. I figured it only fair since Meiran had used it to wake *me* up on my birthday. This time the occasion was Wufei’s birthday. We snuck into Wufei’s and Duo’s room very quietly. Quatre was ready with the camera, Trowa holding the box with Wufei’s present in it, and Jamie right behind me with a smile on her face. I considered the idea of waking up Duo silently before letting the gong in my hands have it—nah, this would pay him back for ‘accidentally’ shoving me into the pool yesterday.

Silently I counted ‘1, 2, 3!’

*GOOOOONNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG!!!*

Wufei bolted upright, eyes panicked and darting around until they landed on me. Then they narrowed dangerously. I just grinned. Duo, apparently recognizing the sound, rolled over and pulled a pillow over his head.

Jamie hummed a note and we all started singing. “Happy birthday to you—”

Duo pulled himself out of his pillow cave and joined in with a sleepy voice. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Wufei! Happy birthday to you!”

Wufei glared at the gong. “Was that thing necessary?”

I shrugged, feeling an itch to hit it again just because. “Yes.”

What he muttered wasn’t polite, so I didn’t translate. Trowa tossed the small jewelry box at Wufei, which he easily caught. I think he recognized the box size, because his eyes went impossibly large. “You didn’t.”

Jamie smirked in reply. “Yup.”

Wufei tore out of the bed and sprinted down the hallway, air vacuuming in his wake. We tore out after him, wanting to see his face when he caught sight of his birthday present. He still beat us out the front door, but only just. I saw him stagger to a halt just on the edge of the porch. When I caught up with him, I looked at him and felt completely satisfied by the look of stunned amazement on his face.

The car in front of him was a 1972 Charger T-top, a sleek silver with black racing stripes down the middle. This one was already DMVed, Duo having somehow managed to pry out of Wufei what he would put on his dream car. The plates read ‘NOTSHRNG’ in bold blue letters.

Duo came up behind his lover, wrapping his arms around the other’s waist. “What do you think?”

“It’s perfect,” Wufei whispered. It sounded a little choked, and I think he was holding back tears. He turned his head to kiss Duo on the forehead, then pulled free to hug Jamie. “Thank you.”

She hugged him back. I’ve noticed in the six months that I’ve lived in this house that she always seemed pleasantly startled when we hug her or offer some unsolicited comment or endearment. I’ve been working on being more demonstrative, wanting to somehow pay this remarkable woman back for all of the miracles she’s managed to give me and my brothers.

Wufei walked—actually, he might have been skipping, but it was hard to tell—down to his car and started inspecting every nuance and angle. Remembering how I felt when I got my ‘stang, I let him alone. Quatre was snapping pictures like mad, he and Duo laughing at how dreamy Wufei’s expression was. It struck me that since all five of us had muscle cars, we were probably going to have to go drag racing at some point.

“The question is,” Jamie muttered to herself, “what am I going to get you guys *next* year?”

“And Christmas,” Trowa reminded her with a twinkle in his eyes.

“Argh. I forgot about Christmas. Maybe you guys should just write lists or something.”

My eyes went to Quatre and Trowa, standing so closely together, then to Duo and Wufei. I couldn’t possibly think of anything to put on that list. Everything that I had ever wanted was surrounding me, and a future with them was mine to hold.

The day that Duo had led us to Jamie, sitting in front of a café with a book in her hands and a cup of hot chocolate in front her, came to my mind. The past three years had taught me not to trust anyone—but that day I had dared to trust and followed a complete stranger home. I looked again toward my mother, smiling to myself. She caught the look and smiled back, not questioning my good mood.

I was home. We were home.

Thank God.
