Author’s Insane Ramblings on no particular topic:
This can be completely blamed on LadyMidnight. She sent me the freakin’ plot bunny! She just HAD to pick the ONE PAIRING that I wasn’t writing. Sure, I had an IDEA, but it wasn’t a full blown plot bunny yet! *pouts* Although…this was really fun to write.
Shigeki: Just admit it, Honor. You enjoyed this one.
Honor: …okay, so I did. But that doesn’t mean you people can send me any more plot bunnies!
Shigeki: What, like Lady Snowblossom?
Honor: Yup. Nutty rascal sent me a dozen plot bunnies! Like I didn’t have enough already. Argh. Anyway, go read. I’ll stop babbling.
Boys: *silently relieved*
Honor: I heard that.

Chapter Six: Cause and Effect

The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is to love and be loved in return.
~ From "Unforgettable with Love" by Natalie Cole

There was a side effect of snuggling in the same bed. Heero discovered that a sleeping Quatre was damn near irresistible. Every time he saw him lying there so peacefully, Heero just had to take a taste. This morning was no exception.

Quatre was spooned up against Heero’s chest, one hand loosely tangled with his boyfriend’s. Heero just watched him for a while, an odd sort of pride and pleasure mingling in his chest. This beautiful, charming person was all his. He wasn’t sure how he managed to pull that off, but somehow Quatre was his.

Ducking his head a little he started nibbling along a bare shoulder. Quatre stirred sleepily, a little pleased hum slipping from his throat. Encouraged, Heero traveled up his neck to the one spot that was guaranteed to get a reaction. Quatre arched, just as predicted, and woke up enough to give Heero a smile. “Good morning to you too.”

Heero tugged him in more and gave him a squeeze. “Ohayo.”

“Do we have to get out of bed?” Quatre tried to snuggle in more, sleepily content to be just where he was.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you invited Trowa, Duo and Wufei over.”

Quatre considered that, a frown gathering on his face. “That wasn’t good planning on my part.”

Heero charitably refrained from agreeing. Out loud.

Quatre twisted to face him, nuzzling up to steal a kiss. “Why don’t we just tell them to go away?”

“Go right ahead,” Heero murmured as Quatre captured his mouth. Their embrace tightened as the kiss went deeper and more passionate.

*snick*

“Kodak moment!”

The entwined pair on the bed broke apart to see Duo grinning at them, a camera in hand.

“Heero,” Quatre muttered with deceptive mildness, “you go right.”

“Ryoukai.”

Duo gave Heero a worried smile. “What does that word mean?”

“Accepted,” Wufei supplied from the hallway. “If I were you, Duo, I’d start running.”

Duo obviously thought Wufei had a point—because he did just that. “You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man!”

Two teens pelted after him without realizing that Duo had handed the camera off to Wufei as he went. Wufei smirked and meandered to his room and to his waiting laptop. Blackmail pictures on one’s friends was always beneficiary.

Duo was chortling when he saw Heero Monday morning, sliding in close to mutter “The orange glitter didn’t come off.”

Heero grinned back at him. “And the whip cream?”

“Unfortunately, some of it is still stuck on.” Duo grinned evilly. “God, I love pulling pranks on them!”

“And on us,” Heero observed sardonically.

“What? It’s a cute picture.”

“You wouldn’t be saying the same thing if it was a picture of you with Trowa.”

Duo leered in response. “You wanna bet?”

“Duo, stop tormenting my boyfriend.” Quatre slid through a pack of students, sliding an arm around Heero’s waist once he was close enough to do so. “Now, both of you remember what today is, right?”

Duo blinked at him. “Uh…the fourteenth?”

“No, idiot!” Quatre rolled his eyes. “I knew you’d forget. You’re lousy with dates. It’s Wuffers Day.”

Duo slapped his forehead, groaning. “Shit, you’re right! Man, how could I forget that?”

Heero blinked at them blankly. “Wuffers day?”

“Every year for the past two years we’ve celebrated the day that Wufei finally admitted he was our friend,” Duo explained. “It took a long time to get him to admit it, and we commemorate the day by celebrating. Usually we go bowling.”

Heero had an odd look on his face. “It’s October fourteenth already?”

Quatre quirked a brow at him, also thinking it through. “Come to think of it, you’ve been with us a little over four weeks, huh?” It had taken nearly two months of work on Quatre’s part before Heero would admit to being friends.

“…yeah, about that.” Heero went silent, eyes focused out in space somewhere.

“Hey Q, we gotta have a Heero Day too. What day did he finally admit he was your friend?”

“Er…the second.”

“Okay, write that down somewhere so we remember it.”

Heero yanked himself back into the present. “I don’t need a day.”

Duo shared a smirk with Quatre. “Funny, Wuffers says the same thing every year.”

“We usually ignore him,” Quatre added.

*ring*

The three sighed. Time to go to class. Quatre shared a quick kiss with Heero. “See you at class, okay?”

“Okay,” Heero responded quietly. He went to his first period class, just sitting there and thinking. Two and a half months, nearly three he had been living with Aunt Sana. His father was bound to call soon, wondering where he was. Jonathan Warren was almost like clockwork in this one regard. Every three months he called the Yuy residence, wanting to talk to Heero. And if he didn’t get to talk to him, then he arrived personally to assure himself that Heero was still there.

Heero’s fists clenched. Every time…every time that Jonathon started to investigate, Heero got dragged from wherever it was that he was staying and brought back ‘home’ to San Francisco.

He didn’t want to go back.

Quatre was his home now. He didn’t want to leave him.

Please God…let me stay. Just this once, let me stay.

Fate nudged Destiny a little. “Outta curiosity, why are we still watching these two?”

“Well, for one thing there hasn’t been any real nookie yet.”

Fate nodded. That was a valid point. “Any other reason?”

“…call it a hunch.”

It had not escaped Quatre’s attention that Heero was more withdrawn than usual. He let it lay for a while, until school and work were over, but no longer. Dragging Heero into his room he sat him down on the bed and straddled his lap. “Okay, out with it. You’ve been thinking about something since this morning, and it’s worrying you. So what is it?”

Heero drew Quatre in closer, letting his head rest against the blond’s chest. It felt so good to just touch him. “Quatre…I need to tell you something about me.”

Quatre quirked a brow. He’d never pressed Heero for details about his life. He’d felt it was the wrong tack—when Heero was ready to tell him, he would. Apparently now was that moment. “I’m listening.”

“I’m…a bastard. My mother had an affair with her boss, which coincidentally was her husband’s boss as well.” He felt Quatre tense and looked up with tired eyes. “His name is Jonathan Warren. My mother and step-father hate me—I’m a reminder of her mistake, especially with my blue eyes. I’ve never lived with them for more than a few months. They’re constantly foisting me off onto other people to live. Every three months or so Warren calls the house to talk to me. If my mother can’t produce me, then he just shows up to verify if I’m there or not. And if I’m not…my mother goes and gets me before he arrives.”

Quatre’s hands were shaking a little as he lifted them, cradling Heero’s face gently. “You…you’ve been here almost three months.”

Heero nodded with closed eyes. “I know. Quatre—I don’t want to go back. I don’t want to leave you. But I might have to.”

Quatre wrapped both arms around him and squeezed tightly, possessively. “I’m not letting go of you. He can’t take you away from me. They don’t want you there, and they’re not getting you.”

The logical part of Heero told him that Quatre had no say what happened. But Heero didn’t care about logic. He just prayed as hard as he could that just this once, his biological father would forget he existed, and let him stay.
