Chapter Six: Dating 911

The only things you regret in life are the risks you did not take.

“Jamie.”

She looked up from her medical texts (catching up on various exotic diseases and the like had seemed like a good idea, considering where the boys sometimes fought) to see a—timid? Shy?—Heero standing in her doorway. Oookay. Something told her that this was important, so she put the texts down and turned to face him. “Come in, Heero.”

He did, shutting the door firmly behind him. In deliberate movements he sat down on Wufei’s unoccupied bed, eyes planted firmly on the floor. “I…I want your advice.”

//Yup, this is definitely serious.// She halfway hoped that it was something to do with Duo, too, but she couldn’t assume that it did. “Alright. On what?”

“…Duo.”

//Oh ho! So it’s ‘Duo’ now, eh?// Her inner girl started rubbing its hands together in glee, but she sternly repressed that urge so that it didn’t show on her face. “Dating advice, by any chance?”

His head shot up, eyes wide. “How did you know?!”

“Um, Heero, you were not really that subtle about this. The first thing that tipped me off is your ability to rattle of his likes and dislikes. If you had been best friends for several years, it would make sense—or if you loved him.” She arched an eyebrow in emphasis, feeling a little gratified when he reddened and lowered his eyes again. “But more than that, you always turn to Duo first for advice or company. Even on a mission, it’s Duo you prefer guarding your back.”

“Hn.”

“So how can I help?” she asked gently. Conversation really wasn’t Heero’s strong point, as she well knew. That he was here at all, asking for help, spoke volumes of how important Duo was.

“If you were to ask someone out on a date, how would you do it?”

Jamie mentally rolled her eyes. //Geez, Heero, can’t you just ask straight out ‘How do I get Duo to go out with me?’// “Heero, I’m a girl. It’s not MY job to ask the guys out. But if I were on the receiving end, I’d tell you what I would like.”

He nodded, following this.

“Creativity, for one. The first date can be something simple, and standard, but you should at least make the way you ask him creative.”

Heero gave her a deer in the headlights look. “Creative?”

//…and if there’s one thing he isn’t comfortable with, it’s that. Darn.// “Um, yeah. I’ll help you with ideas. But you should also TALK to him. I know that isn’t your strong point, and you really don’t have to chatter a mile a minute, but try to answer in complete sentences when he asks you a question and pay attention to what he says.”

“I always listen to Duo,” Heero responded simply. “What else?”

“Be courteous. Be considerate. If you really want points with him, feed him sugar.” If she hadn’t known better, she could swear he was taking notes on every word she was saying. “Do you have an idea for a date?”

“There is an action movie in town that I think he’ll like. I found the summary intriguing.”

“That’ll work just fine,” she approved. “Now, how to ask…”

+

Jamie was sitting on the couch, still going through her medical texts…or so it appeared. Really, she was lying in wait for a certain pilot. She and Heero had cooked up a way to ask Duo, but the very nature of it demanded that someone had to tell Duo where it was. Jamie had been nominated for this important task so that Heero could be elsewhere and nervously pace.

“Hey!” Duo called out in greeting as he came into the house. “Is there any leftovers?”

Jamie shrugged. “No idea. I DO know, however, that there is something you must see in the freezer.”

Duo stopped in place, giving her a suspicious look. “…really.”

“Yup.”

Giving her another suspicious look he went straight to the kitchen. Jamie hopped up to stand in the doorway. Her job wasn’t quite finished yet, and truthfully…she wanted to see his face.

Duo opened the freezer and immediately saw what Jamie was referring to. There was a very large chunk of ice—colored a dark red, for some odd reason—sitting smack dab in the middle with his name on it and a question mark. Picking it up, he realized that something was frozen inside the ice but couldn’t see any details. “Jams, what is this?”

Several answers were debated in her head before she settled on, “Someone making their move.”

Duo whipped around to stare at her in burgeoning hope. “You mean—”

“It is very important, Duo, that you find out what is in the middle of that block of ice. And *don’t* whatever you do, stick it in the oven or microwave.”

Duo nodded in eager agreement and took out the ice. Then he frowned. “Then how the hell am I suppose to get whatever it is out?”

“That, I leave to your energy and creativity.”

+

After ten minutes of chipping at the block of ice with a spoon, Duo groaned in frustration. Dammit, this was taking forever! He wanted to know what it was! He stared at the block in growing agitation. “Okay Duo, think rationally. If you wanted to melt something quickly, how would you do it?”

The light went on.

“Hot water! Of course!” Grabbing up the block, he raced to the bathroom and yanked the hot tab all the way over. In growing delight he watched as the ice started to rapidly melt.

But it still wasn’t fast enough!

Spinning back to his feet, he sprinted for the kitchen, grabbed his discarded ice pick, then sprinted back for the bathroom. He skidded to a halt on his knees, reaching over the bathtub’s side to hack at the ice again.

Five minutes later, the Ziploc bag trapped inside finally came free. “YESSSS!” Hopping to his feet, he ripped the bag open to look inside.

Two movie tickets, for later on that evening. Duo’s face melted into a smile. “Looks like a date invite to me!” Absently he wrenched the hot water off before running into the living room. “Jams! Where’s Heero?”

“You got it free, I see,” she noted in amusement. Duo’s hair was wet, shirt soaked from the shoulders down, and eyes sparkling like a child’s in a candy store. He didn’t seem to care how wet he was, either. “I think he’s in the garage tinkering with something.”

“Right.”

Heero was not tinkering with something. He had tried, but his fingers just wouldn’t cooperate—probably because his brain was focused on something else entirely. He was putting on a good show, though, with his head bent over a spare part of Wing as if he were searching for some kind of system’s failure.

“HEERO!”

The shaggy head snapped up just in time to see Duo take a flying leap at him. They grunted as Duo slammed into him, hugging him tightly. “You *bastard*!” Duo pulled back to grin at him, eyes dancing madly and glowing like a thousand stars. “It took me fifteen fucking minutes to get those tickets out!”

Heero stared back at him, feeling his face draw up into a smile. If Duo was smiling at him like this (despite the cursing) then surely he welcomed Heero’s advances…

“You are a devious man, Heero Yuy,” Duo whispered as he lowered his head to graze his lips across Heero’s. “And I like it.”

Heero returned the kiss with pleasure and a sort of dazed joy—never had he expected that Duo would want him back! “Do—” his head tilted to get a better angle “—you want—” mmm, he tasted of chocolate, had he been eating some before coming home? “—dessert or dinner—” damn, kissing him was distracting “—with the movie?”

“Do I get you for dessert?”

Heero grinned back at him, tilting his body so that he could lay flat on the garage floor with Duo on top. “I guess it’s dinner, then.”

+

Jamie glanced at her watch. Hm. Going on twenty minutes, without a single peep from the garage. She smirked to herself as she went back to her books. “Ninmu kanryou.”

+

“Right, does this hurt at all?” Jamie carefully moved Quatre’s right arm in several different ways.

“No, not even a twinge,” Quatre answered cheerfully. He had a feeling that Jamie would take off the casts and bandages today. Since it had been at least three weeks since he had been injured, he was getting anxious for that to happen. Sleeping next to Trowa platonically was all very sweet and romantic for a while, but after three weeks it was nothing more than frustrating.

Jamie had a very good suspicion of what was going on inside Quatre’s mind. Considering that he was a sixteen year old male with a hot boyfriend, it didn’t take a lot of synapses to guess. “Well, that’s one cast off.” Reaching down, she pulled out her nifty-difty new toy (which was ‘obtained’ by one Duo Maxwell). This toy could x-ray bones, or with a flip of the switch, it could x-ray tissues. A blessing, considering that she was not working in a hospital environment. She turned it on with child-like glee and scanned it over Quatre’s leg. The broken bones would always have a faint hint of injury, but it was healed. “And that’s two!”

Quatre laughed out loud, eyes toward the ceiling. “Thank Allah!”

“Only one thing left to check, and then we can clear you for some nookie.”

“JAmie!”

“What?” She grinned at him. “You’re cute when you blush, blondie.”

That blush became more pronounced when she peeled his shirt off so that she could study his abdomen. He knew, intellectually, that Jamie was his doctor. And she was good, too. That *didn’t* change the fact that she was very attractive and his age, and he was a guy and there was no guy on earth that could keep his mind clean for more than ten seconds at a time.

Jamie nodded to herself. Yes, there was only a faint hint of the bruising that was there earlier. Her machine agreed that he was still a little tender, but it was nothing to be worried about. Of course, the zipper of his pants was interfering with the machine, so she unbuttoned and unzipped his pants so that she could draw them out of the way.

“JAMIE!!!” Quatre yelped. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Jamie arched a brow at him. “Examining your lower abdomen. Quatre—this shouldn’t be bothering you that badly. I’m your doctor, and you’re gay. What’s the problem?”

“I’m bi, actually,” Quatre retorted in a strained voice. “And you’re beautiful, doctor or not.”

Her other eyebrow joined the first. “Oh…I see.”

“Jamie,” Trowa’s voice drawled from the doorway, “what are you doing?”

“Molesting your lover,” Jamie replied calmly. “What does it look like?”

“I was rather hoping that you were giving him a clean bill of health so that *I* could molest him.”

“You’re so selfish, Trowa,” Jamie sighed as she took one last look into her toy before switching it off. “What happened to sharing, huh?”

“You have a grouchy dragon,” Trowa answered as he came around to sit on the bed next to Quatre. “Go play with him.”

Jamie paused in putting away her equipment to look at him. Was that entirely in jest?

“You can, you know,” Quatre encouraged her softly. “He’s holding back because he isn’t sure about how to approach you.”

“Are you suggesting that I give him lots of physical affection to bolster his courage?”

Trowa winked at her.

She saluted back. “Mission accepted.”

Quatre groaned. “Now I *know* you’ve been hanging around Heero too long! Just do me a favor and get these casts off me first?”

“Certainly.” Jamie brought out her special scissors to cut the cast off. “I even have a large tube of lubrication if you want to borrow some.”

“JAMIE!”

+

It might have been Wufei’s imagination, but it seemed to him that Jamie was purposefully finding excuses to touch him. He did *not* mind in the slightest, of course, but if she was…hm.

He sat at the breakfast table with everyone else. He had to leave for his mission soon, but Jamie had insisted that he at least eat breakfast first. Since he would have to survive the next four days on his own cooking, he decided to fill up on some food now that wasn’t burnt, under-cooked, or watery.

Jamie had outdone herself this morning. There were fresh biscuits, bacon, scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. Wufei’s mouth had been watering ever since he had woken up. Even Duo was up, for a change. Eating all of this only reinforced his dread for going on that mission, however. He had basically stayed near Jamie since she had come back with them, except for the occasional one-day mission. He didn’t like the fact he would be away from her for so long. //Ancestors know I won’t be able to sleep. I’m too used to having her in the same room, now. And eating is going to be a chore. By Nataku, this is ridiculous! I’ve let the woman become vital to me, but she doesn’t even know it!//

He started when he felt someone tug his hairband out. He wrenched sideways to see Jamie standing behind him.

“Hold still, Wufei. You missed a strand this morning. Just let me play mother for a bit, okay?”

Simple shock kept him in place. The feeling of soft fingertips gathering hair up into a pony tail, brushing at the nape of his neck and smoothing over his scalp should not have been pleasurable or the least bit erotic—it was. He felt a blush heat his cheeks and fought it, eyes lowered to the table to avoid the (he was sure) knowing stares of his fellow pilots. It was almost a relief when he heard the band snap back into place. “…thanks.”

Her hand fell to his shoulder, squeezing lightly. “No charge. You want thirds?”

“No.” He smiled up at her to soften the brusqueness of his voice. “I need to go.”

She nodded, following him out onto the porch. He had to wonder if the unhappy set to her mouth was really there, or simply wishful thinking on his part. She looked up at him as he paused. “Stay safe, Wufei.”

“I will.” Ancestors, he wanted to touch her so badly. Surely they were close enough friends by now that she wouldn’t think a hug from him odd. Hesitantly he took a step forward and enfolded her in his arms. She reciprocated in full measure, holding him just as tightly. “That goes for you, too.”

“I know.” Giving him one last squeeze she let go and stepped back.

He caught his duffle bag with one hand and strode away.

“Don’t worry Wuffers!” Duo called from the porch. “I’ll play guard dog!”

Wufei snorted and turned, walking backwards to impart a warning frown at his friend. “You’d best, Maxwell! I’ll stomp on you with Nataku if anything happens to her!”

“Oooh, threats! Jams, I think he likes you.”

Wufei’s ears perked. Dammit, that brash American idiot just couldn’t keep his mouth shut—

“Feeling’s mutual, D,” Jamie responded cheerfully.

—an idiot he was going to have to thank, somehow. Wufei turned away before anyone could see the silly grin plastered over his face. It wouldn’t, after all, match his hard ass reputation.

~*~*~*~*~

Trowa: She’s actually been working on this steadily since she talked to Velvet.
Duo: I know. We really need to find a way to thank her.
Shigeki: You’re only saying that ‘cause you want Heero.
Duo: Yup. He is one FINE specimen.
Heero: *considers Duo thoughtfully*
Quatre: …ah, maybe we need to go elsewhere.
Honor: If going elsewhere means that those two lock themselves in a room, forget it. I need Duo.
Heero: You can have him in an hour.
Duo: *leans up to whisper something in Heero’s ears*
Heero:…two hours.
Honor: *groans* If I could put a button on you two, it would be a rheostat. I’d turn you DOWN a notch or two!
