"Rescues "

Afterthought

The courses of true love never did run smooth.
~ by William Shakespeare ~

“No.”

“Wufei—”

“No.”

Jamie blew out an irritated breath. “Why did I marry such a stubborn man? I must have been out of my mind. Wufei, if *you* can join the Preventers, then you can’t stop me from joining as well.”

Wufei’s scowl became more ominous. “Oh yes I can. What do you plan to do when you become pregnant?”

“Not go on missions,” Jamie returned acidly. “You know very well that I do not ever intend to put my children in danger.” Her eyes narrowed. “And if you think, for one minute, that you can get me pregnant quickly to stop me from joining, think again.”

Wufei grumbled under his breath. Actually, the idea *had* occurred to him. But he wanted to wait until they were both at least in their twenties before they started to have children. He believed that they both needed to mature a bit and experience more of life before starting a family. Jamie had agreed with him, when they had spoken about it before they were married. “You are not putting yourself in the line of fire! I had a hard enough time accepting that during the war. Now that we are free of that, I’m not going to see you in danger again!”

Une looked at the clock, then at the closed door next to her office. From time to time she heard voices but there was no sign of either Wufei or Jamie. She had called them, as well as the other Gundam pilots, in to ask if they would join. She certainly hadn’t been expecting the fireworks that had gone off when Jamie said yes.

And it wasn’t just from Wufei.

*All* of the Gundam pilots had protested. Une turned back to the other four in her office, eyebrow raised. “They’ve been in there fifteen minutes, and I am no closer to understanding her link to the rest of you than I was when you first came in. Would someone care to explain?”

Quatre sighed, rubbing at his forehead. “A little over eight months ago I was captured near Hamilton Base, do you remember?”

Une nodded thoughtfully. “Yes. As I recall you were put in a military hospital, only to disappear a day later.”

“That was Jamie’s doing,” Quatre informed her with a wry smile. “She pulled me out, then called Trowa to come get me. OZ by that point had started to figure out who had rescued me and were coming to get her. We couldn’t leave her to face them alone, so we took her with us.”

Une’s pen rhythmically tapped against the desk. “Wouldn’t that make her a liability?”

“No,” Heero answered concisely. “She was raised as a mercenary. She had the skills to live with us. And the medical expertise we needed.”

“Besides,” Duo added with a grin, “she can cook! Not too bad at hacking, either. There were a couple of times that she helped us gather information for a mission.”

Interesting. Une’s information about Jamie Chang was apparently not as thorough as it was supposed to be. “She is one of you, isn’t she?”

They shared glances between themselves before Trowa nodded. “Yes.”

“Well, maybe not exactly one of us,” Duo corrected thoughtfully. “But she *is* ours.”

“I see,” Une murmured. And she did.

The door opened, Jamie smiling and Wufei resigned. “Sorry for the wait,” Jamie stated with satisfaction. She settled back into her chair, winking at the four suspicious people staring at her. “We’ve reached a compromise of sorts. Lady, if you will put it down in writing that I cannot be called in for missions, then Wufei agrees not to be a grouch about my joining.”

Une sat back, hands steepled in front of her. “From what I have been told, Mrs. Chang, your knowledge will be put to better use in support of my field agents. The terms are acceptable. Unless of course,” her voice went dry “there are any other concerns?”

Jamie grinned at her. “Now’s your chance, boys. Speak up now or forever hear ‘I told you so’.”

“You really will stay here and not venture out in the field?” Quatre’s suspicious look had not lessened in the slightest.

“Unlike you five,” Jamie informed him with a roll of the eyes, “I do *not* enjoy being shot at. The sideline is a very comfortable place, thank you very much.”

Une nodded in satisfaction when she realized that no one else had anything to say. “Alright. I have packets for you all to fill out. Please return them to me as soon as possible. On paper, you don’t start until I get them back, but in reality—I’ll show you what each of you are supposed to be doing. Mrs. Chang—”

Jamie held up a hand. “Jamie, please.”

“…fine. If you would help Sally on processing new personnel in, I would appreciate it. She’s a little swamped right now.”

“Understood. Where is sickbay?”

“Down four doors to your left,” Une answered with a mental sigh of relief. She had been very worried about the work load Sally had taken on.

“Ryoukai,” Jamie caroled as she skipped out the door. “See you later, alligators.”

Une turned to Wufei, a smirk vibrating on her lips. “You have a very interesting wife, Chang.”

“Life with her is never boring,” he acknowledged ruefully. “Where do you want us, Lady?”
