Chapter Eleven

And think not you can
Direct the course of love, For love,
If it finds you worthy, Directs your course.
~ by Gibran Kahlil Gibran ~

He really did have innocent intentions in the beginning.

Wufei was reading (again!) and Duo was bored. It was Quatre’s watch, so it wasn’t like he had anything constructive to do. They had managed to sneak Relena into their current safe house under cover of darkness, and were very much secluded from the outside world. In four days, Sally and her resistance cell would show up and guard Relena up to space, where a colony would harbor the former Queen of the World. The only reason why all three of them were called in was because the doctors didn’t trust any of them alone to do it. They’d been afraid that Relena would ‘accidentally’ fall to some harm or another.

Duo, being Duo, was rather bored by the lack of potential threats (of the immediate kind) and action. So, he decided to pick on his favorite person in the world. “’Fei, come here.”

Wufei was beyond questioning Duo’s lightning moods. He simply sat there and looked at him. “Why?”

Rolling his eyes expressively, he went to him instead, pulled him out of the chair, and raked a quick study up and down his body. “Yup, I was right.”

Patience, Wufei reminded himself. Patience must be exercised with Duo. “About…?”

“I’m taller than you.” Duo beamed at him quite cheerfully.

“…you are not!”

“Yup, it’s true. I grew an inch. Better get used to it, ‘Fei. After all you’re Chinese, and we know that Chinese people are short.” Seeing an indignant narrowing of eyes, Duo added more fuel to the fire. “Hm…I’m American, too, so I’ll probably out grow you
by another foot or so.”

Wufei cracked the knuckles of one hand, glare quite menacing. “Height will not save your skin, Duo.”

Duo grinned. Wufei was just *so* easy to rile. “That’ if you can catch me, Dragon-boy.”

“You say that as if you’re actually fast.” Wufe lunged for him.

Duo, expecting this, twisted out of the way and ran for it, maniacal laughter pouring out of his mouth as he went. He pounded out of the small reading room Wufei had been in, down the hallway, and headed for the living room.

“Oh Allah!” Quatre caught sight of the chase as he sat in the computer room. He pushed the computer chair he was in until it rolled next to the door. “Don’t kill each other or break anything!” he called.

Only laughter and death threats answered him.

“I’m not mopping up any blood,” the blond muttered to himself as he scooted back to the monitors.

Duo was forced to dive over the back of the couch to evade Wufei’s outstretched hands. He hated to admit it, but the other teen was actually very fast. It was taking a lot of effort on his part to stay out of reach. Wufei followed him easily over the couch, but he bounced on the cushions for added momentum and flew through the air. Duo sensed the impending tackle, but couldn’t evade it without tripping over the coffee table. The best he could do was twist so he didn’t land on his face.

Wufei impacted with an ‘oof’, careful to capture most of his weight on his elbows and knees instead of on Duo. Just for revenge on the whole height thing (which was a complete lie, Duo wasn’t any taller than he was!) he grabbed both sides and started tickling mercilessly.

Duo twisted, howling with laughter and squirming. He reached up with his own hands, wanting to wrestle his way free, but of course that didn’t work. Trying to move Wufei was like trying to move mountains. You could do it, it just took more than one person and a lot of leverage. In the process, they were both rubbing up against each other and creating some rather pleasant friction. Duo knew the precise instant when Wufei lost a private battle with his hormones and became turned on by their play. The Asian stopped short, hands stilling, a flush high across the bridge of his nose. He looked a little stunned and guilty.

Duo caught him by the back of the neck when Wufei shifted as if to move. No…don’t leave.

Wufei stilled, black eyes narrowing slightly in confusion. “Duo?”

Slowly, so very achingly slow, Duo drew the other’s head down, his own head lifting and tilting slightly. Breath mingled, hot and sweet on the tongue. Wufei wa watching him with wide eyes, but made no move to break free. Anxiety was a very live fissure of alarm in the back of his mind. What did he think he was doing, kissing his best friend? What if he were wrong? Wufei might love him, but Duo couldn’t guarantee a return of that strong feeling. So why was he starting something he couldn’t guarantee he could finish?

Duo shoved it ruthlessly aside. He was tired of double guessing himself, tired of being scared. The only way he would know was by trying.

Their lips connected, soft skin and warm flesh. Duo moved, careful to keep the contact light and chaste, almost a question. Okay…?

Wufei’s eyes fell completely shut as mouth met mouth. He canted his head further to the side, angling for a better kiss. Duo mmmed in appreciation and arched more into him, a reaction that heated up Wufei’s blood further. He had no idea what had changed, or when it had changed. But he’d seen the brief flash of fear and uncertainty in Duo’s eyes before he had kissed him. He wasn’t sure why Duo felt so hesitant about taking their relationship a step further—but he was going to do everything in his power to make Duo fall as deeply in love with him as he was with Duo.

Duo was very startled when Wufei suddenly took over the kiss, but startlement melted away under pleasure. Each caress of lips drew Duo more into the world of physical contact and exchange of touch until it seemed completely natural and necessary for tongues to become involved. They broke only to change the angle, Duo’s arms closing around Wufei’s head and shoulders and the Asian’s arms sliding up under his shoulders to pull them in closer.

It was only the urgent need for air that forced them to break off.

Duo wanted to say something. He wanted to say *anything*, really, but his throat closed up. What if he said the wrong thing?

That look of fear and anxiety was back. Wufei really hated that look. He rolled them up, so that his back was braced against the couch and Duo was straddling his thighs. Duo squeaked at the maneuvering, and watched him with wide violet eyes. “Breathe, Duo.”

Duo took in a shaky breath. “’Fei…I…”

“Shh. Breathe.” Absently he smoothed back wisps of hair which had escaped their usual confines during their play. “Listen to me. I have no idea why you suddenly decided to take us to another level, but know this—I want to go there with you. I want to try. It’s okay if it doesn’t work out and we go back to being friends.”

“No it isn’t.” It was little more than a threadbare whisper, and Duo swallowed hard to loosen his throat up some. In a more normal tone he managed, “No, it isn’t. You love me.”

Wufei let out a slow breath. So, he hadn’t hidden it as well as he thought he did. “Duo—”

“I’m not doing this just because of that,” Duo assured him hastily. “I wouldn’t try to force myself one way or the other. That’s gotten me into trouble before, y’know? And it doesn’t work. But…I think I could really fall in love with you, ‘Fei. I just don’t want either of us hurt if I’m wrong. I don’t want to lose you if I’m wrong.”

So that was why he was so afraid. It made sense…and it was a fear that Wufei shared. “I am going to do everything in my power to make you fall in love with me. That being said, you should know that you’ll always be my friend.”

The tension eased out of Duo’s body in a long breath. “Okay.” The usual light of mischief crept back int his eyes. “So…does that mean you get to kiss me again?”

Wufei quirked a brow. “I suppose.”

“Good.” Duo leaned in, murmuring, “Cause I really like it when you kiss me…”

Wufei smiled slightly, drawing that lithe body closer as he kissed a certain loud mouthed American who was, actually, being rather quiet. Probably because his mouth was so occupied.

“Mmm…”

Very, very occupied…

It abruptly occurred to Quatre that he hadn’t heard anything in the past fifteen minutes. That meant one of two things: either Wufei had won and Duo was currently trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey, or they managed to kill each other. Sighing, he got up to
check on them.

As he rounded the corner, he looked in the living room. Nope, no one…wait, that was a pair of legs. Frowning slightly, he stepped in closer and looked over the back of the couch.

…oh. Quatre had to blink a few times to completely process what was in front of his eyes. Duo was in Wufei’s lap, arms tangled around his seat’s shoulders, fingers tangled in black hair. Wufei’s arms were tight around the other’s waist, head tilted to meet Duo’s. Tongues were definitely involved. Smirking slightly, Quatre turned and very carefully tip toed away. Well, it looked like Duo had found his answer.

Maybe he should take a picture of that…just for posterity’s sake, of course.

Hadn’t Trowa left the digital camera with him…?

*scratch*

Quatre jerked out of his light doze, pistol in hand. He had settled himself on the couch for the first night watch, hoping that the position would keep him awake. He peered over the back, watching as two shadows stood in front of the door. Only two?

Quatre cocked the pistol in his hands and slowly crept forward. He had just cleared the couch when the door opened. Well, they were certainly brazen—waitaminute! “Trowa!” Quatre thumbed the safety on and threw th gun onto the couch so he could tackle his lover.

Trowa caught him easily, returning the ferocious kiss with heat and need. They probably would have stayed lip locked for a few hours if Heero hadn’t pushed him from behind.

“I don’t care if you go sappy on each other, but can you move so I can get through?”

Quatre pulled back, grinning. “Hello to you too, Heero. Why are you two back so early? I thought you’d be gone for another week!”

Heero gave Trowa a dry look. “He got tired of waiting, so we just blew up the base.”

Quatre sputtered on a laugh. “That works. Are either of you hungry?”

They shook their heads. “Just tired,” Trowa told him. “Which bedroom is ours?”

“The first one on the right. Heero, you can take the far left bedroom.”

“Hn.” Heero moved past with his duffle bag.

Trowa finally closed the front door, letting his duffle bag fall to the floor. “So how bad is Relena?”

Quatre shrugged as he led his lover to their bedroom. “Not bad, really. That last stunt of hers made her grow up some I think. She was nearly cowering the first two days, but now…now she’s almost likable.”

Trowa arched an eyebrow as he sat down on the bed, removing his shoes. “That I have to see to believe.”

“Hm. The interesting thing,” Quatre made sure their bedroom door was closed before continuing, “is that Wufei and Duo are involved.”

Trowa paused, shoe half-way off his foot. “Wufei and Duo?”

“Mm-hm. You know how I couldn’t get a reading on Wufei?”

“Yes…”

“It’s because he was in love with Duo and hiding it. And then apparently Heero figured it out, and told Duo, but Duo didn’t know how to handle it so he was trying to hide that he knew. And then Relena—”

Trowa held up a hand. “Wait, you’re losing me. Start at the beginning, and keep in mind that I’ve had twenty hours of sleep in two weeks.”

“…right. Okay, from the top.”
