" Chances"

Chapter Six: Persistence

Passion is the quickest to develop, and the quickest to fade. Intimacy develops more slowly, and commitment more gradually still. Robert Sternberg

Duo gave a quick knock on the door before going in. Heero had told him to dress in jeans and tennis shoes, a strange request in Duo’s opinion. As he came through the door, shutting it behind him, he looked around for the Japanese teen.

And saw something else entirely.

Quatre, sans shirt, had Trowa pinned to a wall and was intent on doing a thorough oral examination. Trowa had a shirt on—unbuttoned—and was trying to climb into Quatre’s skin.

Duo froze for a second. Should he interrupt or just scoot past…?

Heero appeared out of the kitchen and waved him forward. “Just ignore them. They’re like that all the time.”

The two, hearing Heero’s voice, broke apart. Quatre turned slightly and beamed at Duo. “Hi!”

Duo fought down a blush and returned the smile. “Hi yourself. Maybe I should drop by more often. You guys put on quite the show.”

Trowa, surprisingly, went beet red.

Duo’s teasing nature pounced on it without compunction. “Aww…that is so cute! Even his *ears* are red.”

“Duo.” Heero said the name in warning.

“What?”

“Leave them alone.”

“Mmm…do I get to tease you instead?”

“No.”

“Man, that’s not any fun.” Duo bounced forward, pulling his best puppy-eyed expression onto his face. “Hey, ‘Ro, where we going?”

“Out.” Heero was doing his best to keep a somber face, but it was difficult with a pouting Duo in front of him.

“Riiight. Is that outside, in outer space, or beyond the outer limits?”

Heero ignored the question and picked up a backpack, slinging it over his shoulder. “We’re leaving.”

Duo sighed, over dramatizing the motion and looked at Quatre in resignation. “Getting answers from him is such a pain sometimes. Hey Q, do me a favor, will ya? If I don’t come back in a day or so, send out a search party.”

Heero snorted. “Baka.”

“Okay, that’s it, I’m getting a phrase book!”

“It means ‘idiot’.” Quatre translated helpfully.

Duo’s eyes slid to Heero dangerously. “Oh does it?”

Heero in turn glared at Quatre.

Quatre smiled innocently back. “Get going, you two. Trowa and I have very firm plans that involve your kitchen floor.”

Duo snickered outright. “Tro, you need me to get an icepack for that blush?”

Heero rolled his eyes, grabbed Duo by the braid, and started tugging.

“Ouch! Okay, I’m coming, I’m coming!”

As they pulled off the main road, Duo took in everything avidly. This was beautiful country that they were in, and he rarely got a chance to truly enjoy the great outdoors.

A sign on the side of the road pronounced “Old Stone Fort”. Duo nearly plastered his face to the window. “Are we going hiking?”

Heero gave him a glance, pleased that Duo was showing so much enthusiasm. Hiking was a favorite pastime of his. “Yes. There’s a five-miler that leads to a waterfall.”

“Sounds cool.” Duo went back to looking at everything. “How long does it usually take?”

“I’ve never timed it. I’ve never felt the need to do so.”

They parked near the entrance and started out. Duo kept up a steady stream of chatter, sometimes turning around and walking backwards to study something that had caught his eye. Heero let him babble, occasionally putting a word in. For the most part, however, he was content to let Duo ramble. This, he had a feeling, was by far the more natural Duo. Besides, he was getting a strange insight as to how Duo’s mind worked by listening.

Once they reached the waterfall, they picked out a sunny patch of grass and settled back to eat the sandwiches that had been packed in Heero’s backpack.

Duo finished off the last of his sandwich, eyeing Heero speculatively. “Heero, why did you bring me here?”

Heero looked up, a little surprised by the question. “To spend time with you.” He frowned when Duo looked away without commenting. “You don’t believe that.”

“It just…feels like you have an ulterior motive.”

“I do.” Heero replied calmly, putting the remains of the sandwiches back in the bag.

Duo’s head snapped around. “What?”

Heero met his eyes steadily. “I wanted to be alone with you. I wanted to bring you somewhere that was free of people and distractions; a place where you didn’t have to check your actions.”’

He…what? As the realization sunk in, a strange ache developed in the vicinity of Duo’s heart. What Heero had done was just so sweet. He had realized that Duo wasn’t comfortable with showing anything more than friendship at school, and had taken him to place where he could react freely. Duo twisted and tackled him, arms thrown around Heero’s neck. “Thanks.” He breathed against the shoulder his head was resting against.

Heero froze for a second—this was not exactly the reaction that he had been prepared for—before raising his arms and returning that hug tightly. “Why are you thanking me? I did this for selfish reasons.”

Duo started laughing softly. This subtle feeling of happiness had been building steadily for hours, and he had to laugh it out before it exploded from him. “Selfish, huh?” Pulling back he looked down into Heero’s eyes. “Have you got anymore selfish ideas?”

“A few.” One of them in particular had Heero’s heart rate going through the roof.

“Tell me one.” Duo murmured, a finger twirling through Heero’s hair idly.

“I want to kiss you.”

Duo’s breathing stuttered a bit at that simple declaration. Leaning forward a bit he whispered against Heero’s parted lips “I’m beginning to like your selfish side, ‘Ro.”

Heero closed in the remaining distance and brushed a light kiss against Duo’s mouth. Duo moved forward when he pulled back, capturing his mouth. For several long moments they explored the other’s mouth, keeping the contact sweet and for the most part chaste.

With a slight groan Heero flicked his tongue against Duo’s bottom lip. Feeling a little bit of greed Duo opened his mouth and slid his tongue between Heero’s lips. Their tongues tangled and rubbed up against each other’s. Duo’s greed grew until he had to feel Heero solid against him. Without breaking contact with his mouth, he pushed the other teen down onto the ground, grinding his hips in a slightly circular motion.

Heero groaned again, his hands splaying against Duo’s hips. They broke apart long enough to change the angle and to catch a breath before diving back in.

He’s letting me set the pace. Duo pulled back a little when the realization hit him. Heero might have initiated this, but he was letting Duo draw the line of what was acceptable and what wasn’t. Looking down into those impossibly cobalt blue eyes, Duo felt something in his chest give a little. “Why are you so patient?” Why haven’t you given up by this point?

Heero smoothed a whisp of hair from Duo’s cheek. “Some things you can’t rush. Some things are worth the wait.”

Duo’s heart skipped a beat. For ages now he had been looking for someone that would stand by him, wait for him, offer him a hand when he needed it and step back when he didn’t. And yet when that person finally showed up, what had he done? Held back, afraid that what was being offered might be taken back without warning. Emotions tore through Duo’s mind, tearing away reservations. His heart knew what he needed to do, and with an almost audible click, he let it happen. For better or worse, he needed to start trusting again. And for better or worse, he was going to start putting his faith in Heero Yuy. “Didn’t some kind of famous dead philosopher say that patience was always rewarded?”

“Persistence is always rewarded.” Heero corrected, hope tightening his throat so badly that he could barely get the words out.

“Close enough.” Duo leaned down and kissed Heero passionately, tangling his hands in the thick hair, devouring every inch of the mouth under his. Heero tasted so good. Duo was fast becoming an addict, the strange notion filling him that he would never be able to have enough of Heero to really satisfy.

The alarm on Heero’s watch went off.

Duo pulled back to glare at the offensive object. “That had better be for a damn good reason.”

“I set it as a warning. I didn’t want us to get stuck out here in the dark.”

Duo looked around, considering the idea. Nope, wandering around in the woods in the dark seemed like a bad idea. “Okay, I can live with that.” He pulled himself up, offering a hand to Heero.

Heero took it, stepping close as he gained his feet. Framing Duo’s face with his hands, he bent to kiss him softly.

Duo leaned into it, smiling slightly when Heero pulled back. “Coming out here was a good idea, ‘Ro.”

“I’m glad. It’s one of my favorite places.” Heero bent to catch the backpack, slinging it over his shoulder. “Come on.”

Duo laced their fingers together on the way back. They took their time, in no real rush to have the day end. Duo still chattered away, but he demanded a fair amount of conversation from Heero as well. The easy comfort they had developed that day stayed when Heero pulled up in front of Duo’s house.

This time Duo had an inkling that Heero wanted more than just a casual wave from him. He slid over the seat, grabbing Heero by the neck and devouring his mouth. When Heero was panting slightly, his hands digging into Duo’s thighs, the braided teen pulled back with a smirk. “Later, doll.”

Heero blinked. “What did you just call me?”

Duo was out of the truck in a flash, grinning over his shoulder. “Oh, sorry. Do you prefer Hee-chan?”

“NANI?!”

Duo laughed, bouncing towards his house.

Heero watched him go with a perplexed smile on his face, but a smile nonetheless. That smile stayed with him even when he went home, and faced a curious Quatre.

Some things were definitely worth the wait.

Footnote: ‘Persistence is always rewarded’ is actually an Honor maxim.

Honor: See? Didn’t I tell you that you were going to get some sugar?
Duo: You said that two chapters ago!
Honor: And your point is…?
Duo: Made.
Honor: Incorrectly.
Duo: With supporting evidence.
Honor: …that happens to be circumstantial!
Quatre: *ruffles through story* Actually, he’s right. You did say that two chapters ago.
Honor: *grumbling* I get no respect around here…
