Chapter Two: Dance Until the Cows come Home

"Life's too short to waste time trying to please every meddlesome moron who's got an idea how I ought to be." -Calvin

When they entered the cafeteria—and why the dance was held in the cafeteria was a mystery that no one but the planning committee knew the answer to—the music was already pounding through the speakers, the lights were so dim that you could only see something if you were standing near the doors, and almost everyone was dancing.

Duo got swept along with the group of friends towards a far corner in the back. They fell into the beat as they walked; forming a rough circle once they found a space big enough to hold everyone. Duo was pleasantly surprised to discover that everyone there was a pretty good dancer. Meiran was right in the fact that she was better than Wufei, but Wufei certainly wasn’t a slouch. The way he moved was the epitome of grace. Duo felt almost clumsy just watching him. Heero and Trowa both were born showmen. They were pulling off moves that Duo had never seen before.

For the first hour or so he simply fell into the rhythm and danced with everyone to the fast music. It felt good to be part of the group. Heero especially made sure that he felt like he was dancing with them. It was a lot of fun, and without realizing it Duo was grinning from ear to ear.

A song by Vertical Horizon came on, a slow tantalizing beat. People started pairing off, couples mostly. Duo moved more towards the wall, avoiding the shifting crowd. Most of the girls in the crowd wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole and the guys certainly wouldn’t, so he was pretty sure that it would be wiser for him to just step out for a few minutes and get some clean air.

Before he could put that plan into action someone grabbed him around the waist and spun him back around. Duo blinked, opened his mouth to protest—

—and came face to face with Heero. The Japanese teen took advantage of the other’s surprise and moved in closer, both hands on Duo’s hips. Duo automatically started to move with his partner’s lead. After a hesitant beat he slid his hands up Heero’s arms to rest on his shoulders.

When Meiran had told him that Heero was bi, she hadn’t been kidding.

Heero shifted closer and leaned in to murmur, “Relax. I don’t bite.”

“Sorry. I just didn’t expect you to…uh…” There was absolutely no way to end that sentence well.

Heero let his hands wander a bit further over Duo’s hips. “I don’t care what people think.”

Duo relaxed, hands going up further to rest against Heero’s neck. “That’s good. Cause if anyone notices this, you’ll never live it down.”

“Is that experience talking?”

Duo leaned back slightly and shrugged. “Yeah.”

“Hn.”

“Where’s Trowa?” Duo looked around, but didn’t see any hint of the tall figure.

“Outside. He couldn’t answer his cellphone in here.”

“Oh.” They turned a beat and Duo grinned to himself. Meiran and Wufei were plastered together, and about a second away from speaking the language of tongues, if their faces were anything to judge by. As much as Meiran liked to rant about her boyfriend, it was apparent that he wasn’t a bad guy. He certainly had enough patience in dealing with his mercurial girlfriend. And he had accepted Duo without hesitation.

No, he certainly didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize what was being offered to him here.

The song ended and the faster music took over again. Everyone split apart and moved back into the rough circle formation. Duo didn’t think much of what had just transpired, living in the moment as he was. In fact, it wasn’t until the third slow dance that he realized just what was happening.

Heero was interested in him.

After that first slow dance, Heero had made an almost concentrated effort to dance with Duo. At first Duo hadn’t really noticed. But when he had…well, there was no harm in just dancing. So he shifted a bit to accept Heero’s presence. And left it at that. Heero didn’t seem content with just that, however. He made sure to dance with Duo at every slow dance.

Duo wasn’t sure what to make of this. Was this a ‘you’re hot let’s get it on’ thing or something deeper? Meiran hadn’t mentioned much about either Heero or Trowa. He didn’t think she would be close friends with someone shallow enough to go for casual sex…but these two might not do much dating around her, so the possibility was there that she would know nothing about it.

Just how was he supposed to respond?

After three hours, the dance finally ended. People started rummaging around for discarded jackets or backpacks. The five moved out into the cool night air, away from the crowded sidewalks.

“Well, that was fun.” Duo noted brightly to no one in particular. “You guys are pretty good. What kind of whining was that Meiran? Your boyfriend makes a ballerina look like an alligator on a pogo stick.”

“He’s not as good as *you*.” Meiran grumbled and meeting Wufei’s sideways glare.

Duo laughed and pounced on her long enough to steal a hug. “Mei-rei, *no one* is as good as me. Or as sexy. Although these three come in a pretty close second.”

“You should see Quatre.” She answered, winking at Trowa. “He’s gorgeous.”

“Oh really?” Duo purred. “Do tell.”

“Actually, you should have already met Quatre. Trowa, what happened?”

“Something popped up and he had to baby-sit two of his sisters.”

“Not *again*.”

Trowa shrugged. “I’m going over there now.”

“We’ll give you a ride.” Wufei told him. “That way Heero isn’t going out of his way.”

“Fine.”

Duo decided to take this moment to break away gracefully. “Welp, see ya’ll tomorrow.”

Heero looked at him sharply. “Did you drive?”

“Ah…no.”

“Then I’ll give you a ride.” He gave a casual salute to the other three and surreptitiously snagged Duo’s elbow so that the braided youth couldn’t escape.

“Ah, Heero, you don’t have to.”

“I don’t want you out alone.” Heero answered softly. With a pointed glance towards the emptying cafeteria he continued, “There are too many people over there glaring daggers at you.”

Most of them female, Duo noted. But a few of them weren’t, and it was that few that would be most likely to follow him home and rough him up a bit. If they managed to catch him, of course. Duo resisted the urge to flash them a victory sign and docilely allowed himself to be maneuvered toward the parking lot. “Tell ya the truth, I wasn’t looking forward to sprinting madly home tonight. Especially after all the dancing I did today. Thanks.”

“No problem.”

Duo had barely managed to open his locker before Meiran pounced on him. And since he was still half asleep and not at all coordinated, she had him in the quad where the rest of the guys were hanging out before he could even open his mouth to protest.

Heero took one look at that dazed expression and pushed a cup of coffee into Duo’s hands. “Here.”

Duo lifted the Styrofoam cup and gingerly sniffed. “That’s coffee.”

“Black.” Heero agreed, fighting a smile.

“There is a god.” With the first sip, a heavenly choir broke out into full halleluiah’s in Duo’s mind. His level of lucidness increased with each sip. By the time half of the cup was consumed he actually looked awake.

“It’s like watching the animation of Shelley’s Frankenstein.” Wufei noted, watching with interest.

“Or a vampire when the sun is setting.” Trowa agreed.

Duo glared at the two. “Unlike other perfect people that we aren’t going to mention, SOME people in this world are not compatible with mornings.” He looked down at the cup in his hands. “Heero…I’m guessing this was yours.”

“Yes.” Heero shrugged. “I didn’t really need it though. Don’t worry about it.” He looked at Duo critically and lifted a brow. “Should I make a habit of bringing coffee with me?”

“That depends.” Duo responded easily.

“On what?”

“Whether or not you want to talk to me before first period.”

“Hn.”

*ring*

Everyone groaned. Duo looked at the door and sighed. “Well, our slave driver calls. We must obey.”

Heero leaned down to pick up his backpack, slinging it over one shoulder. “What class do you have first?”

“History. I’ve got it with Cox.”

“Then I’ll walk with you. I’ve got it with Jasper.”

Duo snickered. “Is it true that he only shows videos?”

Heero shrugged. “Yeah. I don’t pay a lot of attention though.”

Duo opened the door, slinging his backpack on in the same movement. “Really? What do you do instead?”

“Play around with programs mostly.”

“Really? You’ve got a laptop? Man, that’s cool…”

Meiran watched the two as they walked side by side, eyes narrowed in suspicion. Duo was animated and practically bouncing, Heero turned slightly toward him. “Chang.”

“What?”

“Did you notice anything strange about how Heero was acting just now?”

Wufei, knowing that it would annoy her, shrugged and answered “Actually, he’s been acting that way toward Duo since last night. You were too busy showing off to notice.”

He got a glare and an elbow in the stomach for that comment.

She stayed quiet, however, watching the area where they had disappeared thoughtfully. “How serious do you think this is?”

“Very.” Trowa answered from behind them.

They both turned toward Trowa, faces demanding an explanation. Trowa smiled slightly. “When I got home last night, he was sitting on the couch with a cup of cold coffee, muttering to himself. From the little that I could hear, it involved Duo, strategy, and something about having to protect him.”

Meiran shook her head. “Heero doesn’t mutter.”

“I know.” There was a distinct twinkle in Trowa’s eye.

Wufei grinned, an answering twinkle appearing in his eyes. “This is going to be fun to watch.”

Heero was waiting for Duo as soon as the bell rang. Everyone had eaten lunch together near the soccer fields, only moving when the bell had signaled the end of their break. Heero had watched Duo the entire hour, noting everything. The braided teen had been in his element among them, joining in their friendly bantering with ease, laughing and smiling.

Last night Heero had been attracted from the first moment that Duo had stepped onto the gym floor. He could admit that easily. As he watched, however, it became something more intense. Duo was becoming less of a hot body that he wanted to get his hands on and more of a person.

Five minutes before the bell rang, Heero had come to a very firm decision. He wanted Duo. Therefore, he would get Duo. Just how he was to accomplish this was puzzling him a bit…especially when putting any moves on the braided teen on campus would mean nothing but grief for them both. But there had to be a way for him to tell Duo that he was interested without…ah. Now there was an idea.

Heero waited until the group had split up, walking with Duo towards their classes. They both had gym as their last class, and it meant walking to the other end of the campus. “Duo, you have a cellphone right?”

“Yeah.” Duo gave him a puzzled look.

“Let me see it.”

“Sure. Hang on a sec.” Duo twisted around and dug it out of his back pocket. “Here.”

Heero easily caught it and opened it up. The first thing he did was look up the cell’s number and memorize it. Then he entered in his cellphone number into the speed dial, and his house number. Duo was watching him out of the corner of his eye, but Heero didn’t pause to explain. When he was finished he tossed it back. “I’m five. The house is six.”

Duo looked at the phone in his hand blankly. “You programmed your phone number into my cellphone?”

Heero nodded. “Don’t hesitate to use them.”

Duo watched Heero walk into the boy’s locker room and scratched his head in bafflement. Why had he done that? Sure, it was a thing to do among friends to exchange phone numbers. But usually someone asked for them first. This felt more like something that a…nah. Heero wasn’t coming onto him.

Or was he?
