Chapter Ten: The Parent Factor

"Sleep deprivation is fun- you see such pretty colors."

When the door connecting the garage to the house opened, Trowa was understandably confused. Heero and Duo were still asleep, Quatre never came in through the garage, and his parents weren’t due home for another two weeks. Leaving the coffee maker to run, he came around the wall—

—and came face to face with his parents.

Sara Yuy smiled when she spotted her son and came in quickly to give him a hug. “Trowa!”

“Hi, Mom. You’re back early.”

“You grew again.” She remarked, looking up at him. “And yes, we’re back early. There’s quite a story attached to that, but I’ll wait to tell it when both of you are in the room. Where is Heero?”

Trowa squirmed ever so slightly. “Still asleep, I think.”

She blinked at him in surprise. “At ten in the morning? Heero never sleeps that late.”

Trowa was silently castigating his brother for putting him in this position. He could hardly tell his mother ‘Well, he’s been up all night having hot kinky sex with his husband’. There are some things you just *didn’t* tell your parents. He compromised with “He was up pretty late last night.”

She smiled fondly. “He does have a one-track mind, doesn’t he?”

Trowa choked slightly over her word choice. “I’ll go get him up while you get your bags in, okay?”

Trowa went up the stairs as quickly as possible. Making sure that his parents weren’t within hearing range, he knocked softly on the door. “Heero?”

No response.

Knocking a little harder he called again. “Heero?”

Silence.

Trowa growled. “You two had better have sheets covering you at least…” With as much stealth as he could manage he slipped the door open and peeked inside. No, it was safe. Heero was spooned up against Duo’s back, the blankets modestly covering them from the chest down. Tip toeing in he laid a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Heero.”

Heero started awake and turned to see Trowa leaning over him. “Trowa?”

“Our parents are downstairs.”

Heero stared at him blankly. “They aren’t due back for another two weeks.”

“They’re home early. Mom said she has quite the story to tell us.”

“Not as good as the one we have to tell her.” Heero noted. “I’ll be down in a minute…no wait. I’ll stall them. You wake up Duo and get him moving.”

Trowa glared at him. “I am not waking him up. I have no desire to see my brother-in-law naked.”

“Fine. I’ll get boxers on him at least. Just take care of the rest of it.”

“Fine.” Trowa agreed, turning his back.

It took two minutes flat for Heero to get boxers on his dead to the world husband and pull a pair of jeans on, leaving Trowa the onerous task of getting Duo up and moving.

Heero had no idea how to tell his parents about this. He had known that the time would come for him to tell his parents about Duo, but he hadn’t been thinking about it much. He had counted on having at least two more weeks to plan out the right approach. For now, the best way to act was to be glad to see them. Which he was. He just wished that they could have arrived either three days earlier, or two weeks later like planned…

“Heero!” Odin Yuy came forward and gave his son a bear hug. A large man with dark hair and eyes, he talked and handled every situation like the sergeant that he was.

Heero returned the hug and smiled slightly. It was good to see his father. The man made anything seem not only possible, but easy to accomplish. “Hi Dad. Trowa tells me that there’s a story behind you and Mom being home early.”

“There sure is. Sweetheart, you need a hand with that?”

Sara came in, a large duffel slung over her shoulder. “I’m fine. I’m just going to drop it in the laundry room. Where’s yours?”

“In the laundry room.” Odin returned with a grin.

“Good.” She tossed it into the room and closed the door. “And that’s where they’ll stay into doomsday, as far as I care. Good morning, Heero.”

Heero looked at her amused expression and felt himself blush a little. His step-mother was amused that he was up so late on a Tuesday morning. He was very grateful that she didn’t know why he was up so late… “Good morning.”

They exchanged a quick hug and she pulled back to smile up at him. “We have quite the story to tell you.”

“So do I.” That statement had seemed like a pretty good opening to Heero, although he still wasn’t quite sure how to continue with the rest.

“Oh?” Odin looked at him in curiosity. Usually the boys led rather quiet lives.

“And I think it’ll top yours.” Heero continued, somewhat nervous.

Odin looked around. “Well, the house hasn’t burned to the ground. I saw both vehicles and your motorcycle outside intact. Neither of you are hospitalized. This can’t be too serious.”

“Actually, Dad, it’s very serious.”

Sara took one look at her son’s face and realized that something was up. “Let’s go sit in the living room.”

Heero nodded, moving toward the loveseat. His parents sat on the long couch, turning slightly to face him. “I’m not quite sure where to start—”

“The beginning would be a good place.” Sara responded.

“The beginning.” Heero repeated softly, smiling despite himself. “Alright. The beginning was when I met someone, someone that I am extremely attracted to. It happened about four weeks ago.”

“Is this a guy or a girl?” Sara inquired.

“Guy.”

Odin shifted a little. He was not entirely comfortable with the idea of his son having a love life.

“It took me four weeks to convince him I was serious. And…”

Sara frowned a little when he faltered. “Let’s take this back to the beginning, only this time I want more detail. How did you meet him?”

“He’s a dancer. Meiran and Wufei had this bet going about who was the better dancer. To shut Wufei up, Meiran went to the local Dance Club on campus and worked with him. The first time I saw him, it was at an assembly. They danced in front of the school. It was” sexual, powerful, captivating “extraordinary. I’ve never seen anything like it. Meiran convinced him to go to the dance afterwards, and after that he just became one of the group.”

Sara nodded in understanding. “And then?”

“He’s been hurt before. It made him shy away from…anything more involved than friendship. It took time to convince him that I was serious, and that I wasn’t going to back down. I was making progress. He was beginning to accept me, and to return my interest.”

Sara had the feeling that something had gone wrong after that. She nodded to show that she was still following the story.

“He called me four days ago. Told me that he was in trouble, and couldn’t go home. He’s never called me before that. NEVER.” Heero swallowed the brief spat of anger. It was still a sore point with him, although Duo was doing his best to smooth it out. In time, he would likely laugh about it. “I went to get him. I’ve never seen anyone so terrified. He was completely white, and shaking so badly… But he wouldn’t let me take him to a hospital, so I brought him here.”

“He’s still here, apparently.” Odin remarked softly.

Trowa was coming down the stairs, guiding Duo by virtue of his hands on the braided teen’s shoulders. Duo was shuffling down the stairs so slowly that it made a zombie look lively. Heero had to cover a laugh. No matter how many times he saw it, he laughed. Duo trying to move before he was actually awake was just pure entertainment. Duo was only wearing a pair of jeans. Apparently Trowa had lost his patience before he could attempt to get a shirt on the baka.

Trowa maneuvered Duo around the couch and sat him down on the coffee table. Duo sat without a word of protest, eyes still closed. Trowa hesitated a moment, hands hovering in case Duo wasn’t awake enough to keep himself upright. When it was apparent that Duo wasn’t going to move at all, he nodded and went into the kitchen.

Sara and Odin both were staring at Duo in fascination. Heero rubbed his mouth to hide a smile. “Don’t worry. This is typical for him in the mornings. It takes at least a half cup of coffee to wake him up enough to get anything intelligent out of him. He needs a full cup to be functional.”

Sara tilted her head sideways. “That is not…normal.”

Trowa came back in, a steaming cup of coffee in his hands. He lifted one of Duo’s hands to the mug. “Duo.”

“Wha?”

“Coffee.”

Duo cracked open one eye and stared down at the cup in his hands. “Wha?”

“It’s coffee, Duo.” Trowa repeated patiently.

A dazed and pleased smile came over Duo’s face and he lifted the cup to his mouth, sipping. “Mmm.”

Heero nodded to Trowa in thanks. “If you don’t mind, I’d like for him to be awake for the rest of this. He could tell you parts of this better than I can.”

“That’s fine.” Odin replied, eyeing the boy sideways. “Assuming that he can actually wake up.”

“Give him a minute.”

A minute later Duo had downed most of the cup and looked up, more alert and aware. He blinked rapidly when he saw two strangers sitting in front of him, staring at him in curiosity and no little bemusement. “Hi!”

“Hello.” Sara responded, fighting down a chuckle as the situation tickled her funny bone.

Duo wasn’t normally slow on the uptake, so it was no surprise when he turned a deceptively pleasant expression on Heero. “Heero, these had better not be your parents.”

Heero decided it would be wise at this point to keep a neutral face. “Duo, this Sara and Odin Yuy. Mom, Dad, this is Duo.”

“You’re dead.” Duo told him without losing a whit of his pleasant smile. Turning back to them, he nodded. “Nice to meet you. Sorry if I’m making the wrong impression.”

“Not at all. We did catch you just out of bed, after all. That usually isn’t one of my better moments.” Sara was beginning to like the boy in front of her. He had charm and good humor, as well as some other elusive quality that just made him interesting company.

“Thanks. Okay, what have I missed?”

“I stopped when you called me and I came and got you.” Heero responded.

Duo groaned. “Leaving the hard part for me. Thanks, ‘Ro. Okay, the reason why I called your son was because I’ve got this older cousin, Dekim. He showed up four days ago and…well, let’s just say that it became necessary to leave and disappear in a hurry. The only person that I trusted enough to help me was Heero.” Duo carefully set the mug aside, not looking at anyone. “I didn’t have anyone else to turn to.”

“Heero said that you were terrified.” Odin hated to dig into this, but he wanted to know exactly what the situation was. “Why? Is your aunt completely unable to defend you?”

“Aunt Helen is a sweet person, really. She’s just the type that tries to play tennis on a baseball diamond. Oh, and Dekim hadn’t touched me. Yet. But he went through the trouble of explaining exactly what he was going to do to me once my aunt went to bed. It was enough to shake me up.” Duo waved this away, looking up with a forced smile. “Kinda silly now that I think about it. Anyway, once I got here, Heero went into protection-mode—”

“You would have too if our roles had been reversed.” Heero muttered.

Duo shot him a glance and kept talking. “—and called Quatre to ask for some technical advice. He wanted me out from my aunt’s ‘protection’ as soon as he could manage it, and as quietly. Okay, Heero, your turn.”

“Baka.” Heero growled at him.

“Right back atcha, babe.”

Heero rolled his eyes and picked up the story. “Since we didn’t expect you back for another two weeks, we had to solve the problem on our own. We couldn’t wait two weeks. And, honestly, I wanted…” Heero swallowed and forced himself to look at his parent’s faces. “Yesterday afternoon Duo and I were married.”

Odin froze, trying to connect the idea of ‘marriage’ and ‘Heero’ in the same sentence, and obviously failing. Sara on the other hand bounded forward to catch Duo in a hug. “I’m so glad! I was hoping that you would say that.” She pulled an arm free to hug Heero as well. “I am upset though that I missed the wedding. Have you celebrated it yet?”

“A reception you mean? Um, no.” Duo answered. Since he hadn’t exactly been expecting this kind of response, he was feeling a little disoriented.

“Good. I can at least throw that! Odin, stop sitting there with that dazed look on your face.”

“How am I supposed to look when my oldest son tells me that he’s married out of the blue?” Still, Odin leaned forward to clap his son on the shoulder. “I’m glad you handled this like you did instead of going in there with guns blazing.”

Heero shrugged. “It was tempting.” Then he looked at Duo, features softening. “But I liked this idea better.”

Odin turned to Duo, seeing the somewhat nervous smile there. The boy was charming, no doubt to that, and just as obviously in love with his son. Odin held out a hand and shook Duo’s firmly. “Welcome to the family.”

Duo relaxed and grinned. “Thanks.”

Sara pulled back to look at the three. “Is there anything else you want to tell us?”

“That was the only bombshell we had to drop right now.” Trowa assured her wryly.

Sara eyed him askance at the wording, but smiled. “Good. Duo, since you had to leave so quickly, I am assuming that all of your things are still at your old home?”

Duo felt a little elated when she said ‘old home’. It made him so much more comfortable of thinking of this house as his new home. “Unfortunately, yeah. Heero and I were thinking about tackling that problem later today.”

“Well, why don’t we have a huge breakfast first, we can tell you why we’re back so early, and then we can go beat up on that cousin of yours.”

Duo looked at Heero.

“Sounds good to me.” Heero gave a pointed look at Duo’s half-clothed frame. “We might want to consider the idea of getting showers too.”

“Which reminds me.” Duo looked at them blankly. “Why am I sitting on the coffee table?”
