Author’s Insane and often Incomprehensible Rambling: Once again, I can blame this plot bunny on someone! I love being able to do that. It means nothing is my fault. Emily quite nicely asked for a story for her birthday. (Hi Emily! Sorry it’s late.) So here it is. Em, I *still* think you bribed Quatre somehow. And your story about Milo inspired the plot for this, so the whole thing really can be blamed on you. *grin*
And now, on with the ficage!

" Caught Between Two Worlds"

Chapter Three

It is difficult to say who do you the most mischief: enemies with the worst intentions or friends with the best.
E.R. Bulwer-Lytton

Once again, I was caught by a friend before I could leave school. This time it was Trowa, and where Trowa goes Heero is sure to follow, so I had both of them waiting for me. I waved as I saw them, speeding up a little to catch up. “Hey guys!”

“Hey,” Trowa greeted quietly. “Wanna do something?”

It’s been weeks since I could really hang out with them. “Sure. Where to?”

“My house,” Heero volunteered.

I offered absolutely no protest. The basement in Heero’s house was designed by him—it had the coolest toys in there. It was a geek’s and game player’s wet dream come to life. There was only one thing missing in my opinion to make things perfect. “Can we order pizza?”

Heero and Trowa shared this speaking look. “You’re going to get fat the way you eat,” Heero told me.

I blinked innocent blue eyes at him. “Me? Get fat? Impossible.”

“I want you to remember saying that when you’re forty and five hundred pounds.”

I waved away this concern. “I want meatlover’s toppings!”

“Of course you do,” Trowa sighed. “Heero, make the order.”

Heero rolled his eyes, but pulled out his cell phone and called up Domino’s. Ain’t he a sweetheart?

Trowa led us away from the mass throng of students, who were all intent on getting home as quickly as possible. As soon as we were clear of the mob, he casually commented, “So did Wufei find you during break?”

Color me paranoid, but there was this suspicious gleam in Trowa’s eye that belied his innocent expression. “You told him where to find me, didn’t you?”

“Quatre,” Trowa tsked with sparkling eyes. “It’s not nice to be suspicious of your friends.”

“I’m not suspicious, I’m right,” I growled up at him. “What did you say to him, Trowa?”

Heero started snickering beside Trowa. “I knew he’d figure it out.”

Trowa gave his boyfriend a dirty look, but apparently knew better than to try and argue the point. He gave in with an elaborate shrug. “If you must know, *he* approached *me*. And the only thing he asked was where your locker was.”

“And you only answered the question,” I agreed sarcastically. I didn’t believe for one second that was all there was to it.

“Well, I might have mentioned something along the lines of ‘hurt him and die’, but that’s just part of my job.”

Yup, that sounded more like Trowa. “TROWA! I can handle things myself.”

“Really? Then why did Dan Wilkinson slam you into a locker today?” Trowa stopped, grabbing me by the elbow and forcing me around to face him.

Eeeeek. I know that look. I’m in trouble. “How did you know about that?”

“Wufei mentioned it to me,” Heero volunteered with a very penetrating stare in my direction.

Darn. Busted. I should have mentioned to Wufei to keep that quiet. “Guys, after what Wufei did I doubt Dan is going to breathe hard around me.”

“I agree.” Trowa was still at that deceptively mild stage, like a rattlesnake all coiled up and just ‘resting’ in a sunny spot. “Which is the only reason why Wilkinson is still breathing at this point. Quatre, I know the guy’s patterns. He’s been bothering you for a while, hasn’t he? He always builds up to kicking someone’s ass. How long has this been going on?”

“I’m not going to complain about every little thing,” I told him quietly. “I was handling it.”

“You shouldn’t have to, Quatre.” Heero shook his head, blue eyes uncompromising. “That’s the point.”

When it was obvious that I had nothing to say to that, Trowa gave an elaborate shrug. “Well, it doesn’t matter. Wufei is playing guard dog now.”

My head snapped around so fast I nearly lost my balance. “What?! Why?!”

“Because he likes you.” Trowa’s tone added the ‘duh’.

My mouth went dry, and I think my eyes were bugging out of my head. “…you’re making that up.”

Trowa took great delight at saying, “Nope.”

“You better not be jerking my chain Trowa Barton,” I growled at him. My heart felt like it was going eighty miles an hour. Could he be right? Could Wufei really…like me? I mean, want me as a boyfriend?

“You’ll see,” Heero inputted with a hidden smirk.

Whenever Heero smirks like that, I know I’m in trouble. “Why?” I demanded suspiciously. “What did you two do?”

“You’ll see,” Heero repeated blandly.

Argh.

Thirty minutes later, with my mouth full of pizza, I did ‘see’.

Heero (henceforth known as a dirty, sneaky rat) had invited Wufei over. I nearly choked on my pizza when he walked down the stairs into the basement. At his appearance, I wasn’t sure if I should thank my best friends for their meddling, or kill them.

Wufei looked a little surprised to see me, but delighted too. Apparently Heero had set him up just like me, only Wufei didn’t know he had been tricked. Yet. I swallowed the bite in my mouth hastily as he approached.

“Hello, Quatre.”

His voice really is like liquid sex. I love listening to him. “Hi, Wufei.” I beamed up at him. “Come have some pizza.”

“Thanks.” He sank into the beanbag, right next to me. I’m not sure if he was wearing cologne or something…but if he did, I know what the name brand would be. Aphrodisiac. He wasn’t four inches away from me, and the feel of his body heat alone was making me horny.

Very casually he twisted around to grab some pizza and started inhaling it. I thought Duo could eat fast, but Wufei put him to shame. I waited until he had eaten three slices before I tried to strike up a conversation. “Um, just out of curiosity…what did you do to make Dan Wilkinson so afraid of you?”

Wufei paused in grabbing a fourth slice to look at me thoughtfully. “You don’t know?”

“I’ve never seen you before Wednesday,” I admitted.

“Hm.” One shoulder hitched up in a casual shrug. “Nothing much. He just recognizes that I’m stronger than he is.”

Heero, stretched out on the couch, snorted at this.

Wufei paused with the pizza half way to his mouth and gave Heero a challenging stare. “You disagree with that, Yuy?”

“I heard the story,” Heero corrected with a pointed look. “You broke his arm in three places last year.”

He did *what*?!

Wufei flushed a little under my incredulous stare, shifting a little uncomfortably. “I really didn’t have much choice in the matter. I had just come *out* and he kept ambushing me. It was either make it impossible for him to fight me, or constantly be on my guard.” He lost the shyness when he looked at me, quiet and serious. “If he does *anything*, I want you to tell me. This time I’ll break both arms.”

…okay, Trowa’s right. He likes me. I felt a little flustered being the center of his attention, but I didn’t let it get to me. I lifted my chin and crossed my arms, showing my own determination. “That’s not necessary. I can take care of myself.”

Wufei subjected me to this long, thoughtful study. Then he turned and looked at Trowa with a resigned sigh. “You’re right. I’m just going to have to shadow him.”

“Told you,” Trowa replied smugly. “Our Cat is a highly independent creature. He’s not good at asking for help.”

“Will you two idiots stop talking about me like I’m not even here?” I grouched at both of them. I had to act grouchy to cover up the thrill of having Wufei constantly around. I really couldn’t be upset about that prospect.

“Anyone up for a game of Halo?” Heero inquired of the room in general, probably to divert me from grabbing pillows and attacking his boyfriend and Wufei.

The diversion worked. Beating Wufei and Trowa at Halo was actually a better option than trying to do so with pillows. Pillows tend to get me in trouble.

Wufei watched me with reasonable suspicion. “Are you as good at Halo as you are at chess?”

I just smiled at him innocently.

“…this time, you’re not beating me.”

“You just keep telling yourself that, Wufei.” It wasn’t nice to rub salt in the wounds, but a determined Wufei was a very challenging adversary. I liked playing against him in that kind of mood.

Wufei growled wordlessly. “I’m in.”

I snickered to myself as I grabbed my favorite controller from underneath the TV. Well, this ought to be fun.

I don’t know how this happened.

I really don’t.

Honest.

Last thing I remembered it was roughly one in the morning, and we were debating between putting in a movie or switching to a game of Splinter Cell or something. I’m not sure when my eyes had closed, or when I had fallen asleep. I sure as hell don’t remember when Wufei had curled up around my back and fallen asleep next to me.

I lay there with my eyes closed, just enjoying the sensation. I’ve never cuddled up with a hot guy before—it’s really nice. In fact, I think I’m pretty much addicted. Wufei was like a living furnace, just radiating heat and keeping me nice and toasty. And it was just so comforting and relaxing to be wrapped up in those warm arms, having that tart masculine scent fill my lungs with every breath. Oh yeah, I can get used to this.

He shifted slightly behind me, lifting an arm and brushing back some of my hair from my forehead. Then I felt a gentle kiss pressed against my temple. Awww…he’s so sweet! I was about to open my eyes and turn toward him when Trowa spoke.

“You really have it bad for him, Wufei.” His voice was so hushed I almost couldn’t hear him. Judging from the sound, I think he was on the couch next to the beanbag.

Wufei’s arm came back to my waist and snuggled me more into his body. “What’s your point, Barton?” Wufei breathed, apparently trying not to wake me up.

“When are you going to tell him?” There was an expectant silence, then Trowa spoke again. “I’m tired of seeing him hurt. Every guy he’s ever been interested in has rejected him for one reason or another—I expect you to be different, or there will be consequences.”

“You’ve said that before,” Wufei snorted. “Cool it, Barton. I don’t have a problem with him being a Sensitive. My family is the same way. I’m not going to freak out over that.”

“Good.”

It’s really hard to keep your face straight and act like you’re sleeping when people are talking about you like this. I decided I better find a way of hiding my face before they realized I was innocently eavesdropping. Acting like I was only shifting positions, I turned until I was facing Wufei, snuggling my head up just under his chin and wrapping my free arm comfortably around him. Okay, I also pressed my hips into his while moving, I admit it. Come on, can you blame me? Wufei is damn near irresistible. It was somewhat gratifying when I felt him react, too.

I was rewarded with another soft kiss against my temple. I really like it when he does that. I should definitely find a way of encouraging it.

Wufei settled back down, breathing evening out. I think he actually fell back asleep. I lay there thinking. I now knew without a doubt that Wufei really liked me, wanted me for a boyfriend…and was probably trying to think of the right away to approach me. Now, the question was, did I wait for him to make a move? Or did I make one?

Hm. Decisions, decisions.

Okay, let’s put this into an equation of time. Which would be faster, waiting for Wufei to come up with a plan of attack and wait for the right moment? Or me just pouncing on him?

Me pouncing on him. Definitely. Okay, decision made! Now, how am I going to approach him? Hmmmm.

I twisted a little, just enough to look around the room. Trowa had disappeared at some point—he can move as silently as a cat when he feels like it—and Heero apparently had already gotten up and was gone. That left me and Wufei alone in the room. I startled mentally chortling in Machiavellian glee. Oh now *this* was an opportunity just too good to pass up!

Without any compunction whatsoever I stretched my neck a little and captured the lobe of Wufei’s ear between my teeth, nibbling on it gently. He groaned in response, hands tightening on hips. He likes that, eh? I made a mental note about that then traveled down his jaw with soft kisses. One hand tangled in his hair, guiding his head down a bit so I could kiss him.

His lips were warm and soft under mine. It was like opening a bag of potato chips—I just could not get enough of the way he tasted. I’d only meant to tease him awake with light kisses, but before I knew what I was doing I was coaxing his mouth open with my tongue.

Wufei responded slowly, still half-asleep at first. As he woke up more, he started to become more aggressive, demanding more of a response from me. I liked being kissed like this—it made me feel very wanted, and desirable, and needed.

Okay, Quatre. You need to stop kissing him for just a second. You’re starting to see black spots, and that’s not a good thing. This won’t kill you, you’ve gone seventeen years without kissing Wufei and you survived, didn’t you?

It took effort, it took discipline, but I made myself pull back a little. Wufei was panting like he’d just run a triathlon and his eyes were a little glazed over. Blinking himself into focus, he smiled slightly and said, “Good morning to you too.”

I grinned at him. “You’re irresistible, you know that?”

Wufei was a little nonplussed about that. “*I* am? Have you looked in a mirror recently?”

Yeah. I was a too-short blond with pale skin that tended to go towards freckles when I had moments of temporary insanity and tried to get a tan. Nothing spectacular. I kissed him softly to distract him. “I like looking at you better.”

“Hn.” He kissed me back, but didn’t deepen the contact (like I wanted.) “What are you doing today?”

“I don’t plan anything on Saturdays,” I replied as I snuggled in more. “Something always seems to pop up and demand my attention.”

“Good. Today, we’re going on an all-day date.”

I perked right up hearing that. “Really? That sounds good. Where are we going?”

“Anywhere we feel like. Well, to my house first so we can grab my car.”

While just taking off with Wufei sounded good…there was this little matter of practicality. “Why don’t we both run home real quick, grab showers and clean clothes and then I meet you at your house?”

Wufei shook his head slightly. “I like the first part of that, but I’m picking you up at your house.”

Hey, what do you know. Gentlemen still exist in the world. And I had managed to land one as a boyfriend. How had I done that? “Okay.”
