Author’s Chaotic Rambling on No Particular Subject: Yeah. No idea where this came from. Sat down to work on the 4x6, and wrote thirty pages of this instead. Granted, I was in the mood for some supernatural kinkiness, but I wasn’t planning on writing it! Ah well.

" Things That Go Bump in the Night"

Chapter 11

No contest: Love is much, much stronger than hate, and light will always dispel darkness.
-Mary Ellen Edmunds, Thoughts for a Bad Hair Day

My first impression of Treize Kushrenada was mixed. For one thing, he was a vampire, which gave me the shivers; but despite that he didn’t feel ‘evil’ or wrong or anything. Actually, he didn’t feel like anything at all. Maybe that was the other reason why he made me nervous.

When we arrived home from school he was waiting for us, sitting comfortably in the living room. Duo was next to him in a large chair, politely neutral and maybe a little anxious.

“Ah, there he is.” Duo sat up a little, gesturing me forward. “Quatre, this is Treize Kushrenada. Treize, Quatre Raberba Winner.”

I bowed to him slightly, as Wufei had instructed me to do. He, at least, had seen the necessity of coaching me on the fine points of meeting and greeting people outside of the pack. “Councilman.”

“El-Szen,” Treize replied with equal courtesy. “Come join us. Maxwell has told me the entire story, but I still need to clarify a few things with you.”

I liked the idea of ‘clarify’ and nodded. Without a word I sat on the opposite couch, Trowa sitting right next to me. Treize arched an eyebrow at him, but offered no objection to his presence. “Did Merquise, or anyone of his pack, ever ask you for help?”

“No,” I responded immediately.

“Have you ever offered aid to someone outside of this pack?”

“Yes. Relena.”

“Anyone else?”

I thought for a minute. “No, just her. Before I stumbled across Trowa I did my level best to keep my abilities hidden. Few humans know about it.”

“That’s very wise, actually.” There was a brief flash of approval in his eyes before he went back to being neutral. “Would you have offered your aid, if someone of that pack asked for it?”

I didn’t have to think to know the answer. “Yes.”

“Even though they had antagonized you?”

“Oh I wouldn’t have just waltzed into their territory alone.” My smile was a little edged. “Considering what Zechs and Noin were feeling, that would have been stupid. But I would have helped their pack, yes.”

“What were they feeling?”

Even now I couldn’t put my finger on a good description and I frowned slightly as I tried to capture it in words. “It almost felt like greed…but there was a twist to it, something about it I couldn’t completely comprehend. Whatever it was made me very uncomfortable.”

“Greed,” Treize repeated softly to himself. If he recognized what I was talking about, he gave no indication of it. “Did Merquise give a reason for biting you?”

“Yes. He said that I had made the wrong choice, in choosing this pack as my own. He claimed that a werepanther could not live in a pack of werewolves, and then bit me.” I still had bad dreams about that moment. I was hoping they faded soon, because I had woken up Trowa twice in the past two nights, and it was worrying him.

“Ah. Well, young Raberba, I will not pass judgment on you. On behalf of the Council, you are declared a victim of this and are free of guilt. However…I request that you not go anywhere else alone to avoid similar situations. The greed that you felt from them is universally shared among all creatures that need your power to remain sane. Do not be foolhardy and tempt fate again.”

I nodded in empathetic agreement. “I won’t, sir.”

“Good. Now, the Council wishes to know if you are willing to travel and help other clans.”

I had to be very, very careful how I answered this. “I am a Raberba, sir, and cannot sit idly by when my help is needed. That being said, I do not wish to venture very far or for any long duration from my pack. If my help is needed, I will give it gladly, but this is my home, and I will always return here.”

“Well said,” Treize acknowledged quietly. “I understand, and we will do our best to honor your request. Unless the situation is dire, we will never call for your services for more than a week or so at a time. Acceptable?”

I turned to first Duo, who nodded, then Trowa, asking with my eyes if that was alright. Trowa frowned slightly before turning to Treize. “Wherever he goes, I go.”

Treize did that slight arching eyebrow thing again, indicating that he was only slightly surprised by this response. “I can only authorize that if you are mated.”

“We are.”

Slowly the redhead nodded. “I see. Very well, I will make sure it is understood that you will travel with him.” With a faint note of humor he added, “You might want to consider being home schooled. You’re going to be traveling a lot.”

Well, at least that way I didn’t have to worry about explaining suddenly bolting out of class to my teachers. “Er…right.”

“One last thing, Raberba. I must test all of your abilities before I leave, to determine your full range and power.”

His tone indicated that I might object to this, but I didn’t see why I should. “Alright. Now?”

“Yes. I must start back tonight.” Treize stood, nodding to Duo in acknowledgement before heading out of the room. I followed him out, mentally hoping that this would be over quickly and painlessly.

Later that evening I felt like my head was splitting. I had exercised my ability more today than I had in the past two weeks, and that was saying something. Treize had finally left, seemingly very pleased with everything. I was just glad I could stay.

It was nearing a full moon, and I felt the Shifter blood in me stir restlessly. I’d had enough of thinking at the moment anyway, changing over to cheetah form and going for a long run sounded like a good idea.

I went out back, shrugging out of shirt and shoes and socks, leaving them in a neat pile near the back door. Trowa appeared in the doorway just as I changed over. The change itself still felt a little odd, but being in animal form felt great. I shook myself all over once I was in fur, grinning in a cat way.

Trowa apparently decided to join me because he stripped quickly and changed over to wolf form. Call it animal magnetism, but my mate in wolf form is damn sexy. He’d barely settled into his fur before he leapt forward, knocking me to the ground and playfully nipping at my neck. With something suspiciously like a chuckle, he bounced away and started running.

Oh he wants to play does he? He has been a were longer, but I am not to be underestimated. I can pounce with the best of them.

As I chased after him, I was busy devising a strategy of catching that sneaky mate of mine. When I get through with him, he’s going to beg for mercy.

OWARI

Honor: Okay, all inspiration for this fic just died. I had to put the plot bunny on life support just to get this chapter, as short as it is, finished. I guess there’s no epilogue…
Quatre: Nope, no epilogue. Go work on Code Red.
Honor: …yes buana, no buana, three bags full buana.
Quatre: Good slave.
Honor: This is not the life I ordered.
