Chapter Seven: FYI

When working toward the solution of a problem, it always helps if you know the answer.
Murphy’s Law

For about four days, no one went anywhere near Relena. Not until Quatre had replaced the Pink Monstrosity. After that she seemed to calm down a little. The whole limousine-as-flag incident did have one nice side-effect, however. It also meant that we didn’t hear anything about that ‘nice Mr. Neilson’ from her.

And she hadn’t been around Heero or I enough to notice that things had…changed.

After four days of being so close to Heero, it was becoming a habit for both of us to touch whenever we were close enough to. Not anything blatant, just a light caress against an arm or shoulder, leaning closer than was normal when one or the other was sitting, that sort of thing. It wouldn’t have been abnormal for very close friends…except the fact that Heero and I both are not usually ‘touchy-feely’ as Duo would put it.

When Relena finally deemed to grace us with her presence, she visited us while we were investigating Neilson. Of course, she had to choose the exact moment when Heero leaned over the back of my chair, arm casually around my shoulders in a loose hug, to enter.

The sound of her temper snapping was almost audible. I could even see steam coming out of her ears. “*Heeeerrroooo*. What. Are. You. DOING?!”

Heero deliberately brushed his face against my cheek, nuzzling a bit as he straightened. His voice was cold enough to freeze even a black hole. “I’m doing research on your Mr. Neilson.”

Does it make me a perverse and horny teenager if I enjoyed the brief contact in spite of our ready-to-spit-nails audience?

“That is not what I meant, and you know it!” She glared at me hatefully. “Finally got your claws into him, have you?”

It was hardly fair of me, but I was tired of her delusions. She had been lying to herself for too long. I raised an eyebrow an nth degree. “What makes you think that I was doing the pursuing?”

“…” Her jaw dropped, looking from Heero to me and back again in utter confusion.

Ha. I thought that would stump her.

“You mean…he…” Swallowing convulsively, she stared at Heero in growing horror. “You… All the times you wouldn’t touch me, wouldn’t go somewhere with me, just the two of us…it’s because you wanted to be with *him*?”

Something almost like pity crossed Heero’s face. I knew that he at least respected Relena on some level. He would never have spent so much time and effort protecting her otherwise. I hadn’t known that it went any deeper than that, but apparently it did. “Relena. I tried to tell you that.”

Tears started misting her eyes. “Yes. I guess you did.” Turning away she jerked the door open. “I’m sorry. I just can’t—I just can’t deal with this right now.”

Heero let out a slow breath when the door slammed behind her. “I am not fluent in dealing with people.”

“Sometimes,” my voice was quiet, wanting to comfort him because he looked so lost at that moment “people hear only what they want to hear, and see only what they want to see.”

“Hn.” A line of tension in his shoulders dissipated as he turned back to me.

I held out a hand to him and drew him to the chair next to mine, holding it in a loose clasp as we returned to our search.

At eleven that night, we were sprawled in various positions around Quatre’s room, four large pizza boxes stacked on the nightstand. At this time of night, I couldn’t care less how much anchovies were on my pizza. I was swallowing slices down whole.

“It look’s like Quat was right.” Duo announced, heading for the pizza boxes for his third helping. “Neilson is your regular weasel in a suit. Arms dealings, drugs, money laundering, the works.”

“But he is very good at covering it up.” Wufei noted sourly. “It’s taken all five us nearly a week to prove anything.”

“And I don’t think we would have managed it without Une’s support.” Quatre added with a tired sigh. “At least now we have a legitimate reason for telling Relena ‘no’.”

“It’s a good thing.” Duo agreed. “Isn’t there any more pepperoni left?”

I quickly snatched up the last slice of pepperoni on my plate and bit into it before Duo could snatch it. And he would do it too. The boy had no compunction about food.

“Awwww….Tro, that was mean.”

“My pizza.” I told him firmly. “You’re the one who ordered only four larges.”

He sank onto his knees in front of me, whimpering at every bite I took like a ravenous puppy. I studiously ignored him and finished it off with a flourish.

“If you two are quite done…?” Wufei rolled his eyes. “So, do we tell Relena everything, or start out with just ‘no’?”

“Just no.” Heero stated softly. “She’s had enough revelations for now.”

Quatre’s eyes narrowed. “What did we miss?”

Heero and I glanced at each other.

“I think that’s kinda obvious, Cat.” Duo caught the exchange and grimaced. “Tell me that she didn’t walk in on you two screwing each other’s lights out.”

“No.” Heero looked as if he had swallowed a lemon at that visual image. “Nothing like that.”

“But it was obvious that we were at least involved.” I added wryly. “She didn’t even blow up, which was rather a surprise.”

“Hmm.” Quatre and Duo exchanged a look, then shifted out of their positions to flank us.

“We want details.” Duo said firmly, giving me in particular a stubborn glare.

“And you will give us details.” Quatre added, just as obstinately.

Heero looked a little lost as to how to answer to that. With a sigh of resignation I did the honors. “Relena walked in on us hugging, finally realized she couldn’t have Heero, burst into tears and ran out.” I ran that through my head, nodding as I realized I had summed up the situation fairly well. “That’s all.”

The two exchanged another look, this one more resigned.

“He calls that details.” Duo shook his head mournfully.

“It’s better than Heero’s idea of details.” Quatre pointed out, also shaking his head.

Heero and I exchanged a look of our own, but this one was of shared amusement. It was fun tormenting the two sometimes. They were such gossip addicts.

There are about three things that are worse to wake up to than the alarm clock going off. Number one is Duo. Number two is the phone ringing.

Number two is what woke me up from a catnap with Heero. I’ve discovered (through a bit of observation and process of elimination) that whenever my lover feels insecure, he seeks me out and indulges in some hot and steamy sex until he’s found his equilibrium again. I don’t mind this habit…except when it means that he’s feeling insecure about our relationship. That’s only happened once, after Relena found out.

This time around, we had spent at least four hours in his room, moving the bed from one side of the room to the other. All of that considered, I don’t want to answer my cell phone. Right at this moment, I’m not even sure where it is. It’s in my pants pocket, and since Heero was the last person to see my pants… “Heero?”

“Nan’...”

“Where did you throw my pants?”

“’eft side.”

I leaned over him and peered onto the floor. Aha. And there they were. I picked them up, fished out the cellphone, and flipped it open. “Yes?”

//Trowa. Wake up Heero and come to my room ASAP. We have…an interesting development.//

Quatre has the worst timing sometimes. “Acknowledged. We’ll be there in five minutes.” I snapped the cellphone shut and prodded Heero in the ribs with it. “We have to get up.”

One blue eye peeked up through his bangs, and the look I got clearly said ‘that’s not funny, and I’m not moving.’

“Quatre said there’s been a development. He wants us in his room ASAP.”

The eye closed again and he groaned. Heero is such a grouch when he wakes up. He’s been like that as long as I’ve known him. Rolling my eyes, I leaned over and whispered seductively into his ear, “I have a pair of handcuffs that I’ll let you use on me.”

The eye opened again. “Tonight?”

I nodded serenely.

“Ryoukai.” He rolled upright, planted a kiss on my mouth, then headed for the shower with a disgruntled yawn.

He really *is* a grouch. Maybe I should start calling him Grumpy…

Much to my surprise, Relena was waiting with everyone else for our arrival. I winced internally when I saw her. It must be plainly obvious what we had been doing before we were summoned.

Her eyes grew a little wide, then she blushed faintly and focused on the hands clasped in her lap.

Yup. Apparently it was.

Heero settled into the last chair in the small study adjoining Quatre and Wufei’s bedroom. With a shrug I settled at his feet, leaning comfortably against one of his legs.

Quatre smiled at us in welcome, pointedly glancing at his watch. I shrugged again in response. It wasn’t my fault that Heero finally woke up in the shower and felt a little…frisky.

“Now that we’re all here, I’ll let Relena update us on the situation. Relena?”

She flashed a smile at him, but it looked a little forced to me. “Early this morning, Neilson approached me. He requested that he be able to see the Gundams, since he had never been given the opportunity to see them in real life. It seemed a reasonable request at first…but then he asked that none of the pilots be present. He claimed that none of you were very ‘amiable’ towards him and he wanted to have a proper look without all of you hovering.” Her eyes darkened, and I was beginning to see the Relena that held together the peace we had fought for. “I’ve dealt with politicians long enough to know when I’m being lied to. He’s up to something.” She glanced at Quatre again. “When all of you first said ‘no’ so adamantly to his proposal, I thought it was just sentimentality talking. Perhaps paranoia. All of you have close ties to your Gundams. I’m sorry I thought such a thing now.”

“I told her everything we know about Neilson.” Quatre added quietly.

“I wish you had the confidence in me to tell me things like this as you find them.” Relena’s voice was small. “I understand why you don’t.”

An uncomfortable silence followed.

“Relena.”

Her eyes snapped to Wufei’s.

“You’re right. We don’t have that kind of confidence in you. But with what you have done today, you’ve taken the first step in building that trust.”

For a moment, it looked like she wasn’t even breathing. A smile slowly broke over her face and this time there wasn’t anything forced about it. “I’m glad to hear that.”

“Simple truth, Lena.” Duo for once was not a human bouncing superball. His eyes were quite serious when they met Relena’s.

Quatre cleared his throat, breaking the moment. “Back to the matter at hand. Relena agreed to let him into the bunker tonight. We have until then to set up our ambush. Heero, what kind of security do you have down there?”

Heero considered this. “I’ll know if he looks at Wing cross-eyed.”

Duo laughed, bouncing forward to ruffle Heero’s hair. “That’s our boy wonder! So can I plant some explosives? Not something that will damage our friends, of course, just little minor ones that will blow Neilson’s kneecaps off.”

“Duo.” Relena’s voice was dry. “In case you’ve forgotten, I’ll be down there with him.”

“Urk. Okay, so maybe the explosives are a bad idea…”

[8:05 pm. The Dungeon]

“How stupid is this guy?” Duo bounced from screen to screen, catching every angle of Neilson’s entrance through the security cameras. “I mean, come on! We’re ex-terrorists here people. Does he really think that little dinky security lock on the door is all we would do to discourage thieves?” His eyes rolled expressively.

“He has the former Queen of the World as his tour guide.” Wufei pointed out absently, twiddling with one of the screens to get a clearer view. “He no doubt thinks that the higher security measures were taken off line to allow her safe entrance.”

We watched in silence as Relena ushered in the lamb for slaughter. He was very urbanely charming, and clearly very distracted by our mecha. We waited until he was almost at the other end of the room, far from any entrance. Then Heero picked up the phone and called Relena’s cell phone.

“Relena. Move now.”

//Yes, of course.// On screen we saw her turn toward Neilson. “I’m sorry, Mr. Neilson. I have to take this call, but my reception in here isn’t very good. Will you be alright alone for a few moments?”

“Of course. Take your time.”

“Thank you.” With an easy tread she went back out of the room, the cell phone to her ear the entire time as if Heero hadn’t hung up on her.

“She’s really good at the whole ‘I’m innocent and a dizzy blonde’ act.” Duo noted cheerfully.

Neilson barely waited for Relena to close the door behind her before he started pulling devices out of his pocket. Heero and I actually jarred each other slightly when we reached for the zoom button at the same time. I didn’t recognize what that small black box was in his hand, but Duo did. He hissed, eyes fixed on the screen angrily.

“Duo?”

He turned to meet my eyes, and it wasn’t Duo Maxwell looking at me. It was Shinigami. “A simple receive-and-control device. If you attach it to the center brain source of any electronic device, then you can control the machine from any area to its full capabilities.”

“Arrogant bastard.” Quatre noted, in almost detached interest. “He’s trying to steal them from under our very noses.”

“If Relena hadn’t been as sharp as she was, he might have pulled it off.” Duo growled. “We need to get down there. NOW.”

“No need.” Heero hit a button on his wrist com and leaned back in his chair. A moment later Zechs, Une, and Noin stepped into view, guns drawn.

“Mr. Neilson.” Une gestured him sharply away from Deathscythe. “You are to come with us.”

“On what charge?”

“Attempted theft.”

Neilson started laughing.

“Money laundering. Illegal weapons dealing. Murder. Drug dealing.” Une continued calmly, without batting an eyelash.

Neilson stopped laughing. “You can’t prove any of that.”

“Mr. Neilson.” Une started shaking her head sadly. “You just attempted to steal seven Gundams from the most deadly ex-terrorists known to mankind. I truly doubt that you’ll ever face a courtroom.”

Neilson went white. Even on the screen his shaking was visible.

I watched calmly as Neilson was handcuffed and led away. This whole thing was almost anti-climatic after the way it had started. I glanced at Heero out of the corner of my eye and smiled without meaning to. I’m glad it happened, though.

Very, very glad.

Heero caught me looking at him and turned to give me an inquiring look. I shook my head, still smiling. “O’Malley’s?”

He nodded. “Sounds good.” He hesitated a moment before adding, “Just don’t wear your Preventers jacket.”

Remembering our last altercation because of that, I grinned. “But Ociffer, my tar was cowed.”

Heero groaned.

“Hey, that sounded like a story was behind it.” Duo was back to normal now that Deathscythe was safe again. Normal, of course, meaning that he was trying to get into everything at once.

“There is.” Heero said in resignation.

“Come with us.” I offered, including all of the guys into the invitation with a Look. “I’ll tell you on the way.” I was in a rather expansive mood tonight and felt like celebrating with my family.

“You can count me in.” Duo turned to the door. “Let me grab a jacket.”

Quatre almost beat him out the door. “Don’t leave without me!” He called back over his shoulder.

Wufei was almost smiling as he watched Quatre dart out of the room. “I must confess, I’m rather curious about this as well. I believe I will accompany you.”

We started moving out of the room, but I couldn’t resist a glance back at the monitor that showed Heavyarms. Softly I murmured to him, “Sleep tight.”

“Trowa?”

I turned back to my lover and accepted the hand that he held out to me, allowing him to pull me out of the room.
