Author’s Notes: Nyx actually can be blamed for this. She emailed me, requesting that I write a 1x3. So here it is. *huggles* Thanks for pouncing on me! I wanted this idea out and done with. It was beginning to bug me.
Many thanks to Velvet, who let me soundboard off her whenever I got completely stuck. And for betaing. And for putting up with my whining…

Chapter Two: Here There be Monsters

The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
Murphy’s Military Laws

Sanc Palace was dimly lit in the corner that housed The Dungeon, as most people who lived here lovingly referred to it. I think they called it that simply because Heero prefers to work in the dark and growls warningly at anyone who dares to disturb him while he is working. I was inside the main computer lab before I could really get a good look at the place, and waved sharply to a vidphone.

I couldn’t erase the troubled frown from my face as I sat down and punched in Duo’s number. *ring* Duo was on L1 at the moment, and I wasn’t entirely sure how long it would take for him to get here. After all, most of the shuttles wouldn’t be running at this time of night. I had been on the last one. *ring* Dammit, he’d better be home. I don’t fancy the idea of chasing him dow—

//Tro-man!//

I nodded to the violet-eyed-much-too-cheerful person on the screen. “Duo. Has Wufei talked to you?”

//Ah…yup.// Duo’s expression sobered. //You calling me in?//

“Yes. Get here as quickly as possible.”

//And the other guys?//

“Not yet.” I really wished I could just fill him in, but no line in the world was secure enough for that. “It hasn’t come to that yet. Hopefully we can stop it before it does.”

//Roger that. Hey, Hilde!// He threw me a wink and held up a finger to indicate that I should wait. //I need a ride!//

Some five minutes later I was leaning over Heero’s shoulder, following the electronic trail of our hacker. The first time the guy came in, it had taken six weeks to break Heero’s code and find the information he wanted. And, as Heero said, it wasn’t through the main system but through a daughter cell of it that should never have been tagged onto the main program. Oh yes. The idiot who pulled that stunt was definitely going to wake up hospitalized.

Heero had been paranoid enough to keep the information about all seven Gundams in separate locations in the system. So the hacker was only able to find the whereabouts of one Gundam at a time. It was that paranoia that was saving our skins right now. Granted, he was getting faster at hacking into each database—the second attempt had only taken two weeks—but it was still a delay. We hopefully had time to figure this out.

As I followed Heero’s finger on the screen, a part of me wrestled with a dilemma. This wacko—whoever he was—knew where my Gundam was. Therefore, I had to move my Gundam. But I really couldn’t take a quick trip to Australia, into the middle of nowhere, and retrieve him. Heero was right. He couldn’t compute all of this fast enough. I was needed here. But I really didn’t want just any yahoo going in and putting hands on my Gundam either.

Heero stopped at the third fidget from me and looked up over his shoulder. “We can send Duo to retrieve Heavyarms.”

Actually, that was a pretty good idea. I could trust Duo to do it. “Fine.” A thought occurred and I quirked a brow at him. “Is he going to collect all three?”

There was this evil glint in Heero’s eyes that I didn’t trust. “No need.”

[The Alps, 2:03 pm]

From beneath an impressive layer of snow, deep within the cavern of a mountain, there came a slight rumble. Sheets of snow and ice fell as tremors shook the mountain.

Every skier within fifteen miles froze when they felt those tremors, anxiously checking their vicinity for signs of an avalanche. Most felt relief when they didn’t see anything, but some were puzzled.

From the mountain cave a large humanoid shape made its way into the sunlight—and into plain view. Its head turned in degrees, gaining its bearings, and showing the glowing green eyes. Every inch of the creature was white, as white as the snow, and there were strange humps visible over its shoulders.

“The Abominable Snowman!” One tourist—an elderly lady with poor vision—screamed in horror. She immediately attempted to flee on skis.

The cry went up with everyone else in the area. They took one look at the towering creature lumbering its way down the mountain and bolted for safety.

No one noticed when said creature stopped in a clearing and boosted its way into the sky.

[Sanc Palace]

I had turned on the news, wondering if anyone had caught a glimpse of Wing on some private camera. This Gundam, after all, didn’t have a cloaking device like Duo’s.

//…and by all reports, it actually is the legendary creature come to life.//

I switched my thumb from the channel control to the volume and boosted it up a few degrees. There was a very perfectly dressed woman of thirty or so sitting in front of the camera. What had caught my attention, however, was the picture that was beside her.

If I didn’t know better, I would say it was a Gundam. Covered in snow.

//Skiers in The Alps have all been very adamant about what they have seen. This picture was taken by a tourist who was on vacation at the time. The creature—whatever it is—did not approach anyone or do any damage. Strangely enough, it seems to have completely disappeared. Local authorities are investigating the matter. Now on to other global news--//

It was obvious what had happened. Heero had buried the Gundam in snow in order to camouflage it, and in the sub-degree temperature the snow had stuck onto the gundanium metal. I hit the mute button and twisted in my chair so that I could glare at the back of Heero’s head. “Did you have to do it in the middle of the afternoon?”

His rapid typing paused long enough for him to shrug. “It was necessary that I remove Wing as expeditiously as possible.”

My glare intensified. Although I was beginning to see the humor in this. My imagination was supplying visions of helpless vacationers (in chibi size), running from a snow covered Wing, screaming ‘save me!’ “You are a sadistic bastard, Yuy.”

He only shrugged again. But I heard the brief snort of amusement he made and rolled my eyes. “Let’s just hope that Duo is more behaved than you are—” Although I wouldn’t make any large bets on that.

[St. Margaret’s Cathedral, Scotland. 11:58 pm]

From the depths of a crypt in the silent graveyard, there was the faint sound of music. The current priest who resided at the church pulled on a robe and went onto his porch, trying to detect the source of the music. After a moment of listening, he realized it was the Requiem for the Dead.

A grating sound echoed through the darkness, and the music became progressively louder. People who resided near the old church stuck their heads out, curious and a little irate at being woken up at midnight.

The heavy doors to the old crypt swung open with an ominous creak and a shape came into view. Since it was dark, and a strange fog had crept in during the late hours, it was hard to see what had emerged. But the people could see that its eyes glowed green, and it was LARGE. With screams of terror they dove back into their homes and bolted doors, hiding for safety.

No one witnessed when the latest Lazarus lifted into the air with a burst of fire.

I hung up the phone, looking at it with concern. Duo had rather cheerfully informed me that Deathscythe was “on his way”. It was midnight in Scotland, which made me breathe a little easier. I mean, how many people would be up at midnight? But I didn’t know specifically where in Scotland he had hidden the Gundam either…

Just to be on the safe side I turned on the news again.

//…it seems that all sorts of legends are being revived this week.// It was a very attractive man in his late twenties this time. Apparently he was the evening anchor. //We do not have any visual, unfortunately, but there are very detailed and vivid accounts that are surprisingly uniform considering the amount of people offering their statements. All agree that the legendary myth, the Lochness Monster, has indeed walked the streets of downtown Edinburgh. None could offer an explanation, however, as to why the creature was out of his ‘natural’ habitat--//

I turned the TV off with a snap. “*Duooooo*!”

+

Ten minutes later I was settled in front of the vidphone in The Dungeon. I knew precisely what would happen as soon as Quatre had managed to find Wufei and fill him in. The blond always watched the news. And while he was sick, he definitely wouldn’t ‘accidentally’ miss it because of work or some other distraction.

On the second ring I hit the accept button. “Hello, Quatre.”

Quatre didn’t even blink in surprise. //Are those what I think they are?//

Quatre had been our tactician in the war for a reason. I nodded once. “Yes.”

//And is the reason for their…movement, what I am assuming?//

“Probably.”

//Right. I’ll be there in a few hours.//

I held up a hand to forestall him. “Only three have been…compromised. The others haven’t. Stay where you are for now. I’ll update you as the situation unfolds.”

//Duo has been called in, right?//

“Yes. He’s getting mine now.”

//Good.// Quatre visibly hesitated. //I don’t like being so removed from the situation.//

“At least give us a few days to figure everything out.” I returned. I really REALLY didn’t want Wufei out for my blood.

Reluctantly he nodded. //Alright. But you *will* keep me posted.//

Translation: If they find Sandrock, I had BETTER be the first person to know about it. OR ELSE.

I nodded in firm agreement.

//Good. Winner, out.//

Since I had a fair suspicion of who else watched the news religiously, I stayed put. Two minutes later Une appeared on the screen. Her eyes were glitteringly angry, voice dry.

//The Lochness Monster and the Abominable Snowman?//

+

After being thoroughly wrung out by Une—two hours of explanations without actually using the normal words would have put even Duo’s tongue into knots—I walked away from the vidphone and headed to my room. Security could answer the damn vidphone.

My suite—and why I had been given a whole suite of rooms still boggled my mind—was right next to Heero’s. And Heero’s was right next to her Pushy Pinkness. So I tiptoed to my room, not wanting to catch Her attention and not relaxing until the lock was turned in the door.

One hot shower later, I hit the mattress, not wishing for anything more than five hours of un-interrupted sleep.

Honor: Shigeki?
Shigeki: *still sitting in front of Mario Kart, being soundly beaten by Quatre* STOP IT WITH THE BANANAS!
Honor: SHIGEKI!!!
Shigeki: *jerks around, startled* What?
Honor: *I* *AM* *STUCK*! Now get your lazy butt over here and help me get *un*stuck!
Shigeki: Ehehehehe. Right.
