"Moonlight "

Pale moonlight shimmered through the open curtain that normally would cover the large bay window, closing the room’s occupants off from the world and giving them a sense of privacy and seclusion. But not this night and the light threw an eerie glow over the room as well as the man sitting just to the side of the window in a high-backed chair, his normally coiffured, ginger hair still sleep mussed and his piercing blue eyes gazing out distractedly over the large expanse of lawn that fronted his manor house. Thoughts, like fireflies, drifted fleetingly through his mind in flashes of bright light, one being quickly replaced by another. Thoughts of the war that raged unceasingly beyond the boundaries of his estate, thoughts of those under his command that poised themselves to die at his word, and thoughts of the one true thing in his life that made it all worth living.

As if sensing that the man’s mind had drifted toward him, the small figure in the king-sized bed shifted restlessly in his sleep. One thin, pale arm snaked across the wine-red duvet, seeking the warmth that, at that time at night, should still have been pressed against his own, only to find it conspicuously absent.

“Treize?” the soft voice beckoned as the boy’s restlessness increased and the tall man’s attention was immediately drawn to him. Chestnut hair, given a silvery glow by the moonlight, flowed like a river across the covers as the boy sat up on the bed, one hand still gripping the covers where his lover should have been while the other rubbed absently at his sleep-crusted eyes. When their violet depths were sufficiently clear enough of sleep, he shifted them across the bed first before turning them toward the window. Then with a sigh, he slipped from beneath the sheets and padded silently across the room.

Watching him approach, clothed only in one of his uniform shirts that was far too large for his small frame and slipping off one shoulder, Treize could feel his body immediately respond, just as it always did when the boy was near. And when that lithe body slid into his lap, burrowing down just like a sleepy kitten, he could feel his resolve from earlier crumble into dust.

“Angel.” Treize breathed as his arms came around the figure, cradling him close.

“Why do you keep doing this?” the boy asked quietly without raising his head from where he had it pillowed on Treize’s broad shoulder and the man could not hold a quiet sigh.

“You know why.” he retorted, but his voice lacked any real conviction. He knew he had been acting strangely during their last few times together, at one moment cold and distant then quickly flying into anger and rage. And all of it directed at the precious bundle he currently held in his arm.

“But why? We’ve already talked about this a hundred times and you know I don’t care.”

“But I do.” Treize sighed again. It was true that they had discussed the problem many times before in the three months since their relationship began, and each time the boy had managed to convince him that it did not matter, that they would find a way to make it work. In his heart though, the fear made him doubt. They fought on different sides of a war that threatened to tear their world apart and even though they had formed an alliance in their desire to bring an end to the fighting, he knew that if it were ever discovered, he would not be able to protect him. And he simply could not stand the thought that he might be the reason for the world losing that bright and gentle smile.

‘I've been burning in water and drowning in flame to prove you wrong and scare you away, but still you stay by my side.’ he thought derisively. ‘And still I let you, because the very thought of you truly being gone can cause my blood to run cold and my heart to stop mid-beat.’ Unconsciously his arms tightened around the boy’s body as visions of what his life would return to if he did not have such a fey creature in it and he turned his head so he could bury his face in that silken hair, seeking and finding the peace that always came with just having him close.

For a long time neither moved or spoke, each consumed by their own thoughts and fears before the boy finally pulled back so he could look the man in the eyes.

“I know that you worry about someone finding out about us.” he breathed before raising his hand to cup the man’s chin; the stubble of a days worth of beard growth tickling his palm. “But so much in life is uncertain that we have to take what we can when it’s offered, when it’s there. We can’t always worry about what might happen tomorrow or the next day.”

“I couldn’t survive if anything happened to you, Duo.” Treize stated, giving voice to his true fear not for the first time as his own hand came up to cover the one on his cheek. Then, turning his head to the side, he placed a chaste kiss to the boy’s palm before turning his attention back to that gamine face. “You’ve come so close, too close, on so many occasions. If you were captured or… killed, I don’t know what I’d do.”

“Yes you do.” the boy countered with a small shake of his head. “Because of who you are, you do. Peace has to come first, Treize, you know that.”

And in his mind, the man did know that. It was his heart though that told him differently and while he did not voice that thought, he knew it was written on his face as he saw the boy prepare to continue. He desperately did not want to fight about it that night though. It would be the last for several weeks and they had only had such a short while together this time, not nearly enough. So, as those pale lips parted he leaned over and captured them in a deep kiss, slipping his tongue inside and tasting of the one thing he knew he would protect with his very soul if, and when, the time came.

When he pulled back only a few short moments later, he was greeted with slightly glazed, violet orbs that were just beginning to rekindle with the passion that only Duo could give him. Scooting forward in the chair, he renewed his grip on the boy, sliding one arm under his knees while the other wrapped around his back, before standing and heading for the bed. For now, the demon of fear would rest only to be reawaked in the dawn when Duo would once again slip from his life and back into the battle that he himself waged on the boy and his friends. And he would be left to wait until the next time they could be together even as he prayed desperately for the day the war ended and he would never have to watch the boy leave him again.
