Chapter 2

Slowly fighting his way back from unconsciousness, the first thing Duo noticed was the blaring headache that seemed to be radiating from a particularly tender spot on the back of his head. Then, only a second later, he noticed the soft bed and satin sheets he was laying on, something their safe houses never had no matter how nice they were. Carefully cracking one eye open, he briefly surveyed his surroundings, noting the lavish wall hangings and hardwood furniture. He also noticed the distinct lack of another presence in the room, and sitting up slowly, he looked around to make sure that was indeed the case. Pushing himself back against the headboard, he drew his knees up to his chest before cradling his throbbing head on them. Then, clearing his mind as best he could around the pain, he thought back to the events prior to his losing consciousness.

As if through a fog, the memories of the mission came back to him, beginning with his arguments with the other pilots, then his arrival at the club and meeting his contact, and finally the attack that had almost led to his rape. By the time he was finished recollecting his mind, his breath was coming in short pants as panic tried to set in. Hugging his knees tightly, he fought to regain control of himself.

“I see you’re awake.” a deep yet gentle voice to his right intoned, causing his head to snap toward the sound, sending a wave of dizziness through him as his vision grayed. “Easy now, I think you have a mild concussion.”

“How…” he rasped out through his horribly dry throat. In the next instant, he felt the bed dip as a glass of water presented itself to him. Raising his eyes from the glass, he met ice blue depths that he recognized immediately as belonging to the OZ informer he had met at the club. “You.” he breathed.

“Yes, it’s me.” Treize smiled softly, the glass of water still held in his hand.

“You saved me, didn’t you? You stopped him from…” Duo said, his voice cutting off as a violent shiver passed through his body.

“Shh, don’t think about it.” the ginger-haired man said as he pushed the boy’s bangs back with one hand. “It’s over and that man will never hurt you again.”

For a long moment, Duo could only stare at the man before him, the tenderness he was showing him shocking the slender youth. Finally, he managed to shake himself and he reached forward to take the glass of water. “Thanks.” he said with a wane smile before taking a sip. “So, um, where am I?”

“Well, I couldn’t very well leave you at the club and since you were unconscious, I decided it would be best to bring you back to my estate. I hope you don’t mind.”

“No, I don’t guess so.” the violet-eyed pilot answered. “How long was I out?”

“It’s just past ten o’clock now,” Treize said after checking his wristwatch. “so you’ve been unconscious for nearly ten hours.”

“Ten hours?” the boy asked incredulously, blinking a few times at the man sitting in front of him. “I’m guessing that when you said ten o’clock, you meant ten in the morning?”

“Yes.” the blue-eyed man laughed softly. “But you appeared to need the rest so I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Yeah, I guess.” Duo said as he looked down at his lap and only then noticed what he was wearing: an oversized, white t-shirt and a pair of blue silk boxers that were a few sizes to big. Blushing deeply, he raised his eyes to meet those of his contact’s once again. “Um, so did you, um, change my clothes?”

“Well, I couldn’t very well leave you in those pants; they looked entirely too uncomfortable to sleep in.” the man explained, remembering the exquisite torture it had been to removing the boy’s clothes without touching and caressing that ivory skin.

“Oh, well, thanks.” the violet-eyed boy stammered as his blush increased and he quickly sipped at the water to try to cover his embarrassment. Suddenly, the though of how worried the other pilots must be by that time hit him, causing him to groan softly since he knew they would be twice as smothering now that something had happened.

“Angel, are you alright?” the man asked and Duo had to think for a minute why he would be calling him that until he remembered it was his code name for the mission.

“Yeah, I’m ok. I just remembered that my friends were waiting for me to return home last night.” the boy explained. “They’re probably worried sick by now.”

“Well, there’s a vidphone in my office if you want to contact them.” Treize offered, hiding his smirk since he knew the boy was referring to the other gundam pilots.

“Thanks that would be great.” Duo said with a smile before handing the glass back to the ginger-haired man. Then crawling carefully across the bed, he threw his legs over the side and stood up, causing a wave of dizziness to wash over him but before his legs could give out on him though, sending him to the floor, two strong arms wrapped securely around his waist, supporting his weight easily. Looking up into the clear blue eyes of his savior, he smiled softly before he said, “Thanks, looks like you saved me again.”

“Believe me, it’s my pleasure.” Treize practically purred at having the beautiful youth in his arms. Stomping down on his desire though, he assisted the teen into the office where he helped the boy to sit down in the large chair behind his desk.

“Nice office.” Duo commented as he surveyed the surroundings, his trained eye quickly mapping the exits and escape routes. Then, as he was looking the room over, his eyes fell on a uniform jacket draped haphazardness over the arm of a chair on the far side of the room, an OZ uniform to be exact, only it was not of the usual fare, but was the distinct uniform of the Specials. His head instantly snapped around to look at his contact but he saw that the man was not paying attention to him and was instead reading a piece of paper. Shrugging his shoulders finally, seeing as he already knew the man was an OZ soldier; he turned back to the vidphone sitting on the desk before reaching over to dial his connection. However, as he was leaning across the desk, a piece of paper lying on the blotter caught his attention, and looking closer, he heard himself gasp sharply. “Oh my god.”

“Is something wrong Angel?” the man asked, his head turning to look at the teen as he took a step toward the desk. Standing from the chair a little faster than he should have, Duo grabbed the edge of the desk to keep from falling over before leveling a glare at the man, causing him to stop not four feet away.

“What fucking game are you playing here?” the violet-eyed boy demanded

“What do you mean?” Treize asked cautiously, although he had a sinking feeling he already knew the answer to that question.

“I mean this.” Duo said as he grabbed the paper from the desk and waved it wildly. Treize winced inwardly as he remembered laying the paper on the desk when he had heard the boy stirring only a few minutes before. As it turned out, it was a report on the gundams and their pilots, which had been prepared for him by Lady Une not two days ago. Meeting the violet glare currently burning into him, he waited for the accusations that he knew would be coming. “You’re him aren’t you? Treize Khushrenada.”

“Yes.” he answered simply, knowing there was no use denying it.

“Then I asked again, what the fuck are you playing?”

“I’m not playing anything 02.” the ginger-haired man answered and at the shocked look on the boy’s face, he continued. “Yes, I know who you are, I knew the minute I saw that long hair of yours.”

“Then I’m your prisoner?” Duo said, his eyes once again traveling around the room as he prepared himself to make his escape if needed.

“No,” Treize said with a definitive shake of his head. “I was at the club for the exact reason I said I was, to give you the information concerning Romafeller’s plans.”

“Ha, you turn traitor? I don’t think so.” the teen snorted.

“I’m not a traitor. Their ideals simply do not coincide with mine is all and it is therefore beneficial for us to work together in this to defeat them.”

“And after it’s over, after we help you bring them down, we’re back to fighting each other right?” the violet-eyed pilot said skeptically

“No, if they can be brought down, I believe we’ll be able to end this war once and for all.” Treize explained sincerely.

“Lofty ideals for a dictator.” Duo sneered. “Tell me this, why you? Why’d you decide to be the informer and meet me at the club when you could’ve sent any one of your flunkies?”

“Originally, I wasn’t supposed to become personally involved in this, but when your side insisted the meeting take place at the “Heaven’s Door” I had no choice. You were supposed to meet with Lady Une instead.”

“What?!” Duo squeaked out, a shiver passing through him at the thought of the woman.

“Ah, I see you remember her.” Treize said with a small smile.

“Remember her? She tried to execute me, of course I remember her.” the boy stated.

“Yes, and I must apologize for that; she can be very zealous at times. Anyways, I would have sent Zechs in my place but he’s needed at the Martinique base.”

“So, it was either masked man or psycho woman, I think I’m glad you showed up; especially after what happened.” Duo said as another violent shiver caused his legs to give out again and he sat down heavily in the chair. Dropping the papers in his hands at seeing the boy collapse, Treize rushed to the chair, kneeling before him.

“I can’t say that I’m too disappointed in it myself, 02.” Treize said softly, his blue eyes radiating his concern for the small teen.

“Duo.” the teen said after scrounging up a smile, causing the general to raise an eyebrow in question. “My name is Duo, Duo Maxwell to be exact.”

“Giving me your name?” Treize said with a smile of his own. “That’s risky since you’re obviously not sure of my intentions.”

“I believe you.” Duo said, his smile growing even larger. “Otherwise you’d have already called the guards. And besides, you had the code phrase so you have to be telling the truth right?” he finished before winking mischievously at the general.

“Why you little….” the blue-eyed man said incredulously. “You believed me the entire time, didn’t you?”

“Of course.” Duo chirped happily. “I couldn’t miss the opportunity to tease you though; it’s not often one gets the chance to pull a fast one on their enemy.”

“From the reports I keep getting, you’re more that capable of doing that just about every day.” the general said dryly, receiving a bright smile in answer. Playfully swatting the teen on the knee, he stood to retrieve the papers he had dropped, giving the boy some privacy to contact the other pilots.

Still smiling at what just happened, Duo punched in the number to the safe house while surreptitiously checking that the line was completely secure and untraceable. When the call was picked up on the other end, he was not the least bit surprise to see Heero glaring back at him.

“Where the hell are you?”

“Hey ‘Ro, nice to see you too.”

“Duo.” the dark-haired teen growled dangerously.

“I’m ok, Heero. Jeez, you’d think I was in trouble or something.”

“I know about the attack.” the teen offered simply and was gratified to see the braided pilot’s face pale noticeably. “When you didn’t report in or come home, I went to the club to find you. The bouncer told me some man tried to force himself on you but that he and another guy were able to stop it. Then, he said you passed out and the other guy took you home. So where the hell are you?”

“Chill, ok?” Duo said as he shook off the memory of the attack. “He’s my contact and he was nice enough to bring me to his place after I blacked out.”

“Fine, now tell me where you are so I can come get you.”

“Heero.” the violet-eyed teen sighed but realized he was not going to convince the other boy to relax, especially if he told him that his contact was none other than Treize Khushrenada. “Let me talk to Quatre.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re being unreasonable. Now put Quat on the damn line and leave the fucking room.” Duo snapped but Heero merely glared and refused to move. “Dammit Heero, this is a mission and I still have to complete it. If you can’t be objective on the matter then remove yourself and let someone else handle it.”

Duo instantly regretted his words at seeing the anguished look that crossed his best friends face since he knew Heero was only trying to protect him, but he was just as much a Gundam pilot as the other boy and Heero needed to realize that. After a moment, the dark-haired boy nodded his head fractionally before standing and leaving the connection. Then, a few short minutes later, a completely confused blonde pilot took his place.

“Duo?” he said, his face showing his concern for his longhaired friend. “Where are you? Are you all right? Why don’t you want Heero to come get you?”

“Listen Quat, I don’t have much time to talk but Heero’s not handling the situation very well and what I’m about to tell you would’ve only made things worse.” he explained.

“What are you talking about?”

“I met my contact just like I was supposed to last night; he had the identifying phrase and everything.” Duo hedged as he found himself reluctant to tell even the blonde pilot about who he was currently with. “Anyways, after the… attack, he brought me to his house and I didn’t realize who he was until I read something on his desk.”

“Duo, slow down, you’re not making any sense.” Quatre said, his concern increasing at seeing his normally unflappable friend so unsure. “Who are you talking about?”

“My contact, Quat.” the teen said softly. “It’s Treize Khushrenada.”

The silence that filled the line after his admission could have been sliced with a knife and Quatre’s suddenly impassive face made him very nervous. When the blonde finally spoke though, he knew the other boy was calculating the likelihood of their rescuing him without anyone being hurt. “Duo, what is your exact location.”

“Ah Quat, not you too.” Duo sighed with a shake of his head. “Listen, he’s legit; he had the phrase and everything. I know he’s clean.”

“Duo, you are currently in the presence of the leader of OZ and--“

“I’m well aware of that; I’m not stupid.” the violet-eyed pilot snapped, but his face instantly calmed and the next words he said sounded uncharacteristically small. “He really is nice Quat.”

For a moment, the other boy’s words shocked Quatre speechless, then finally taking a good look at the face on the monitor, the Sandrock pilot gasped sharply, “You like him, don’t you?”

“Well, yeah, he’s been absolutely amazing about everything not to mention that he’s hot as hell. I mean, what’s there not to like?”

“Duo--“

“Look Quat, I have to go. Don’t worry about me all right and try to keep Heero calm. I promise I’ll call you as soon as I leave here so you can pick me up.” Duo said before terminating the call without giving the blonde a chance to speak. Sighing deeply, he sat back in the chair.

“So, I’m ‘hot at hell’, huh?” the voice said from directly behind him, causing him to jump to his feet and turn to face the man. At finding the OZ general smiling in bemusement at him, he felt a blush spread across his cheeks and he dropped his eyes to stare at the floor.

“Well yeah.” he said, still not looking the man in the eyes. “I mean you have to know just how good looking you are.”

Snorting lightly, Treize stepped forward and Duo’s head instantly snapped back up to watch him. Smiling as the pilot of Deathscythe Hell took an involuntary step back at his approach, the ginger-haired man continued forward. Unfortunately for Duo, the first backwards step he had taken had placed him firmly against the desk with nowhere to go.

“Anyone can be ‘good looking’” the general said as he stopped only a few inches from the wide-eyed teen before reaching up to gently cup the boy’s left cheek. “True beauty though is very rare.”

“Are… are you saying I’m beautiful.” Duo breathed as he fought against nuzzling into the man’s hand.

“I’m saying you’re exquisite.” Treize said before leaning down and capturing the full lips in a gentle kiss.

At first, Duo stiffened at the contact, but when Treize kept the kiss gentle and did not try to press him, he allowed his eyes to drift close before wrapping his arms around the man’s neck and returned the kiss. Breaking apart after only a moment more, Treize stared down in wonder at the precious creature before him, skimming the back of his fingers down one petal soft cheek.

“Angel.” he breathed in reverence. “What are we doing here?”

“I don’t know but whatever it is, I don’t want it to stop.” Duo breathed back before surging forward to kiss the general again, only this time there was nothing gentle about the meeting of lips. Pulling the boy flush against his body, Treize ran his hands down the lean back until he was able to cup the boy’s firm ass, coaxing him to wrap those incredibly long legs around his waist. Then, continuing the kiss, he carried the boy back toward the bedroom.
