Special Note: I blame this on Hawk, and Tk. LOL. Hawk for wanting so many Les Mis fics. And Tk for not wanting "Break Through" to end on such a sad note.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Tk is going to get her happy ending very soon *eeps quietly, and hides under computer desk, as Tk brandishes her whip* as this story has taken on a life of its own.

Forgive the shameless self-insertion, and the insertion of the two instigators of this fic. But I needed some OC’s and this worked for me.

Finding Myself

Part 3

Sitting in the car while Liz went to order the food, Tk frowned and stared sightlessly out the window. It wasn't that she disliked John; as she'd told him in the living room she didn't know him well enough to make a decision. She simply hoped that Liz wasn't setting herself up for a broken heart. <Now you're making it sound like she's in love with him. Get out of writers mode for a minute and look at this logically.> She gave herself the mental tongue lashing with a sigh. Liz was smarter then that. Falling in love with a child wasn't on her list of high priorities. Hell, falling in love wasn't high on Liz's list of priorities, period. <She's had three boyfriends in 5 years, and none of them prizes.>

"Hello! Earth to Tk! TORI!" The sound of her name practically shouted in her ear, broke the contemplative daze Tk was in. Looking at her friend she grinned sheepishly.

"Been waiting long?"

"Hmmp, only a minute," Liz replied. "Daydreaming about your next Romantic novel?" came the teasing question, and Tk shrugged non-committed.

"Maybe!" Reaching for the keys, her hand was caught in a quick grasp.

"Uh uh, no way," Liz scowled dimly, "not getting off the hook that easily."

"What do you mean?" Tk asked, taking in the look on her friends face. <Playing dumb, might throw her off.> After a moment, Tk gave a mental sigh < Apparently not. > Tk shook her head and frowned. "What do you want me to say?"

"Tell me why your so dead set, against, John staying with us."

"I'm not against it." Taking in the disbelieving look of her friend, Tk sighed sharply. "I... I'm just worried that your getting to attached." Shaking her head, Tk continued, "He's probably got a family, or friends looking for him right now, and..." she broke off quietly leaving the sentence unfinished. <And though you want to be his family, you can't> she sighed and finished mentally.

"I know all that." Closing her eyes and leaning back against the seat, Liz was silent for so long Tk thought she'd dropped the conversation. Then in a whisper so low Tk nearly missed it, "but I don't want him to be... alone... like I was!" Frowning, Tk bit her lip. Liz never talked about her past, but in the last five years, Tk had gleaned enough information to make a small hypothesis. <I just wonder if I'm right...> Ignoring the urge to pump her friend for more information, Tk started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.

~~What's taking them so long?~~ Aimlessly wandering around the kitchen, Hawk absently started straightening things on the counter. Glancing into the living room for the fourth time since the others had left she sighed and moved to stand in the doorway. John was still sitting on the couch, head back, eyes closed, seemingly asleep; but Hawk had noticed little movements, which indicated he was more awake and aware than he was letting on.

Leaning against the doorframe, Hawk studied John intently. Messy chocolate hair looked like it hadn't seen a brush in years, lightly tanned features, ~~I'd sell my soul to be even that tan~~, slim but definitely masculine frame, muscular body, and tapered fingers. ~~He's beautiful, and if I were younger, I'd be all over him in a second~~ Blushing faintly at those thoughts, she turned and glanced at the clock. ~~15 minutes? It's only been 15 minutes!~~

She stepped further into the room and frowned as she notice John tense. ~~Why's he so wary, like he's always got to be on guard?~~ Moving closer she watched him intently. ~~It's like he doesn't even know he's doing it, like it's some sort of instinct.~~ Chewing her lip thoughtfully, she tried to remember where she'd seen that behavior before, and came up blank.

Stopping just a short distance away, Hawk gingerly put out her hand to check John's forehead and then paused nervously. ~~This is ridiculous, your acting like he's gonna put a gun to your head and shoot you.~~ Giving herself a mental shake, Hawk reached forward only to pause again unsurely.

"I don't bite," came the startling, softly spoken statement. "At least I don't think I do!" The added admission broke the ice, and Hawk chuckled softly. Hazel eyes met Cobalt and a small flicker of understanding passed between them.

"At least not unless provoked!" Hawk said dead panned, gently brushing her hand through his bangs. John snorted softly. ***She's...not afraid of me...but she sees something in me that... that sets of warning bells. Makes her act cautious, and puts her defenses up. What does she see?***

"Guys we're back!" Liz shouted from the door, and Hawk smiled at John before heading off to greet her friends. Meeting them in the kitchen, she found Tk looking at her strangely.

"So?" Tk questioned lightly, giving Hawk a glance that said she was expecting some sort of report or play by play of events.

"So what?" Hawk said grabbing plates, silverware and napkins from the cupboards. Smiling at her friend's familiarity with their home, Liz shook her head in amusement as Tk growled.

"Did you talk to him?" Tk ground out, slightly irritated.

"He slept most of the time you were gone." Throwing a peculiar glance at her friends that said 'ask me again later', Hawk led the two of them into to the living room. John watched them come in with a small hint of a frown on his face, but it disappeared quickly as the girls set the food on the table.

"What's this?" he asked with a hint of amusement as he picked up a container of Sushi.

"Umm, food! You eat it!" Hawk countered with a smart-ass grin on her face. With a look of 'I know that I'm not stupid' John rolled his eyes and groaned.

"Japenese food!" Liz said softly, trying to gage John's reaction.

"Why?"

"We thought it might spark a few memories." Tk said softly. John stared at them for a full minute before he let loose with a small chuckle, which grew into full-blown laughter. Smiling at John's amusement, the girls sat down.

"Ok, so it was a dumb idea," Hawk stated, reaching for a carton, "I just thought maybe..." She broke of with a shrug and looked down at her food sadly. A hand on hers made her look up in surprise.

"It wasn't dumb!" John said firmly. Cobalt eyes held a strange mixture of amusement and warning. "It was...nice," he said simply, letting go of her hand and turning back to his own food.

A couple hours later...

Clearing the coffee table while Tori showed John where he could clean up and sleep, Liz sighed softly and threw a questioning glance at Hawk.

"Lyss, did you and John talk while we were gone?"

"Not really." Shrugging her shoulders, Hawk frowned, "I'd rather wait til Tk, can hear this too." Nodding slightly, Liz turned to find Tk standing in the doorway.

"Well I'm here!"

Shaking her head softly, Hawk grinned slightly and motioned for the girls to follow her. Twin looks of confusion were directed at her back as she led them out the back door to the picnic table in the corner of the yard. Sitting down Hawk motioned for the others to do the same.

"Why'd you make us come out here?" Curiosity laced Liz's voice as she settled down and looked at her friend expectantly; a matching look from Tk. Hawk tilted her head thoughtfully for a moment before speaking.

"While you guys were out, I... I was watching him," she started.

"So?" Tk asked impatiently; Liz smacked her arm, making Hawk grin.

"I'm sure she'd tell us, if you'd let her."

Clearing her throat, Hawk gave them both a 'can I continue look' that brooked no arguments.

"As I was saying, I watched him, and ... well he looked like he was sleeping only he wasn't." Hawk paused, shaking her head in frustration. " It was almost like he was expecting to be attacked, and couldn't let his guard down."

"What do you mean?" Tk, questioned softly.

"Well I thought I'd seen that behavior before, but I couldn't remember where, " Hawk paused again looking at the house thoughtfully.

"And?" Liz prompted quietly, a growing feeling of unease settling in the pit of her stomach. //Maybe I don't really want to know.//

"Jason's dad has the same behaviour," she stated simply, glancing first at Tk, then at Liz, as if willing them to make some sort of connection.

"What does your boyfriend's father have to do with this?" Confusion and exasperation seeped into Tk's voice as she glanced quickly from Hawk to Liz and back. A sudden sharp intake of breath from Liz caused both girls to look at her in surprise.

"Tori, what does J's dad do for a living?" //Please make the connection, so I don't have to say it.// Liz begged silently.

"He's a retired..." an indescribable look passed over Tk's face as realization hit full force, "soldier!" she finished with a gasp. <But John's to young to be a soldier.> Nodding, Hawk gave a weak smile.

"Exactly! And Jason, though he doesn't realize it, acts just like his dad!"

"So you think, John's been around military people?" Shrugging her shoulders lightly, Hawk threw another questioning glance at the house.

"That still doesn't explain why you wanted to come out here," Tk said with a huff.

"Just... well Jason's got exceptional hearing, just like his dad... and..." Hawk broke off with a sigh.

"You figured John might as well?" Liz asked quietly.

"Oh come on guys, he's too young to be a soldier." Tk said quietly. " I mean think about it, the only soldiers you hear about being that young are the Gundam pilots." She shook her head and laughed, "And that's just a bunch of wacky rumors." Hawk and Liz looked at her in surprise. "What?! Oh come on,... You can't honestly think...." Tk broke off looking at the house.

Silence fell over the girls for a long moment, as they all stared at the house in quiet contemplation.

"Besides, even if he were, and that's saying IF," Hawk chuckled nervously, "he's got no memory of it. And we wouldn't know the first thing about how to get in touch with his team mates."

"Phht, Tori's right!" Liz finally said with an uneasy laugh. "The thought of John being a soldier is crazy. And the idea that he's a Gundam pilot is absolutely insane." Shaking their heads, the girls trooped back towards the house. Each were so lost in her own thoughts that none of them noticed the living room curtain fall back into place against the window.
