Summary: A conversation in an online chatroom leads to much more for two enemy pilots.
Co-authored with Czarina Merquise.

NOTE: This story begins firmly between Episodes 14 and 15 in the series. And pretty much changes everything else to follow! As we had to adapt the actual timing of events in the series a little in places, you can consider this an alternate GW reality (NOT AU as it's firmly based on the series)

Notes on canonical placement of scenario: Colonel Zechs Merquise of OZ is at the Lake Victoria Base in central Africa while his engineering staff rebuilds the recovered Gundam O1. The Gundam 01 was picked up from the plains of Siberia after Gundam Pilot Heero Yuy self-detonated (and apparently died) the Gundam in response to Lady Une's threat to destroy a colony if the Gundams weren't handed over to OZ.

Gundam Pilot Duo Maxwell, stalled on Earth at the moment since the orders from the colonies dried up after the Siberia incident, is staying at one of the houses owned by the Winner family with his fellow Gundam Pilot, Quatre Raberba Winner, somewhere in the Middle East.

The kiss washed Duo with warmth. [This is right... I fit with him.] He let himself drift in the feelings that were growing stronger by the minute. [I feel like I am being washed along in that river he was talking about earlier...] And then his happy thoughts and physical pleasure came to an abrupt end with a loud rumble from his stomach. Pulling back from his lover's luscious mouth, he admitted with some embarrassment, "Uh... that's me."

"Yes, it certainly is," Zechs chuckled, then laughed outright at the expression on his lover's face. "I think someone needs a little something *more* to eat," he commented, winking suggestively. "But I confess I don't want to let go of you to go call room service."

The younger man smiled at his lover's remarks. "I know what you mean," he said, wriggling in the other's embrace. And then his stomach growled again. "Damn! Well... I haven't eaten since this morning at my friend's house."

Zechs caressed Duo's back, one corner of his mouth curved into a smirk. "Well, then letting go of you will be for a worthy cause. I see we will have to feed you so you'll keep up your strength." Then he swooped in for a hard, swift kiss before releasing him completely.

Duo reluctantly pulled off his lover and sat up, his face flushed. "You make me dizzy," he chuckled. "Would it be all right if I ordered the food? I've learned a thing or two about Middle Eastern cuisine while staying with my friend."

It was interesting how there was no thought given by either man toward actually going downstairs to the restaurant. Neither wanted to take that much time and frankly... room service had possibilities. "Certainly," Zechs sighed happily, propped up on an elbow as he watched Duo throw his legs over the side of the bed. "Oh, and somewhere in there, we could perhaps... clean up a little?" As Duo looked over, he ran a finger through the mess on his belly... and winked.

"Heh, that's a good idea," Duo said with a little chuckle. It had taken all his will power to extricate himself from Zechs's body... and now to actually get off the bed. The other man's playfulness appealed to Duo very much... there was much too much seriousness in his life of late... and he needed this change of pace. But it was much more than that, he knew. He was making a real connection with this wonderful man. "I'll get some towels," he said, nodding to Zechs's belly and then to his own. He turned quickly, sending his braid swooshing behind him, and then padded off to the bathroom.

Zechs sat up and stared hungrily at the departing braid swirling in the air around that sweet, round, little ass. [Damn, I want him...] he thought, aching again. He put his head in his hands as Duo disappeared into the bathroom. [I've never wanted anyone like this... and I keep wondering if I should be disturbed that I'm ready to toss aside my career with OZ, especially now. There's no place for him there... I would not bring him anywhere near *that*...]

An unexpected memory surfaced. Treize Khushrenada's voice when they spoke last. Treize had been about to admit something... uncomfortable... about the Romefeller Foundation, he was sure. [How long does *Treize* have?] he wondered suddenly, and found himself shivering. [Treize's fairyland ideal of OZ swooping in and rescuing Earth and outer space from the Alliance's tyranny doesn't seem to be working out quite like he'd thought... thanks to the stiff necks in Romefeller... and those damn little pilots...]

Straightening, Zechs pulled himself back out of his momentary funk. [Perhaps if I have the courage to leave, Treize will somehow find that courage, too, when the time comes. Anyway, I can't worry about him. I have enough on my plate worrying about my own future... though it's looking considerably brighter by the minute...]

"I'm back! Did you miss me?" Duo smiled as he re-emerged from the bathroom. He bounced over to the bed carrying a wet washcloth and large towel. He'd already taken the opportunity to clean himself and now hoped to do the same for his lover. "Mind if I help?" he asked as he sat on the bed next to Zechs.

"I'd love some help and I missed you terribly," Zechs replied with a little smile, but he put his arm around Duo and drew him in for a kiss before the boy could say anything. It wasn't a deep kiss, but slow and loving. Then he released him and lay back on the bed, folding his arms over his head and closing his eyes.

Duo watched the beautiful man before him... body still, eyes closed. Zechs looked relaxed, and that kiss told the younger man he was wanted, but there was something more... something that he couldn't quite identify. He took the warm washcloth in hand and tenderly wiped the cum from his lover's body. As he worked the cloth over hard muscle he watched for a reaction on that handsome face and was rewarded with a small, contented smile. He continued his ministrations by replacing the wet cloth with a dry one and just as carefully dried Zechs off. "As good as new," Duo said with a grin.

"No, better, because you did it. That was *very* nice," Zechs murmured as he sat up again and captured Duo's chin in his hand as he drew close to kiss him on the cheek and jaw. "Thank you, Dancer. Now, let me take care of those and you order food." He leaned in for a last brush against Duo's smiling lips, taking the cloth and towel from him. Then he stood and loped over to the bathroom, his long platinum hair spilling down his back again.

"Mmmm..." Duo moaned quietly as he watched Zechs move gracefully across the room. His eyes followed the man... enjoying the view of those deliciously long legs and the way his platinum hair swayed at his waist just above that sculpted ass. [Oh, man. I'm getting hard just looking at him!]

Once Zechs had disappeared from view, Duo shook his head clear of sexual thoughts... at least long enough to order dinner. He dialed room service and as he confidently ordered the Middle Eastern fare he was once again grateful for his friendship with Quatre. The other Gundam pilot had taught him a lot about Arabic culture in the short time they had known each other. [Thanks, buddy,] Duo thought happily as he finished the call.

"Well, thanks for ordering all my local favorites," came Zechs's amused voice from very close by. "However did you know?"

Duo whirled around, surprised by the closeness of Zechs's voice. "I had a feeling you'd like..." He stopped in mid-sentence as he got a look at Zechs standing just a few feet away... hand on hip... almost aristocratic in pose. "Man, you..." he paused to swallow, "you take my breath away."

"I do?" Zechs smiled, tilting his head, then the hand slid to his side as he moved past Duo to a bag he hadn't unpacked yet. Fishing out a pair of shorts, he added, "Thanks. You had a feeling, eh? You get those often?" He drew on the shorts, which to Duo's surprise were dark blue spandex, then fished out a t-shirt.

"You bet you take my breath away," Duo was saying as he pulled on a pair of very short, cutoff jean shorts. "I didn't know men like you actually walked the Earth..." he said and smiled brightly as he turned back to face Zechs.

Zechs opened his mouth, about to say offhand that he wasn't anything unusual, but even he had to admit it wasn't true, although of course Duo was referring to his body, not his other unique properties. Or history. "Thank you," he murmured with a little smile. Then he noticed what Duo was wearing. "Um, I could say the same about you..." [They don't get shorter than THAT!]

Duo followed Zechs's hungry gaze to his cutoffs. He gave a little chuckle. "Thanks. I was wearing these last night when..." He trailed off. [We're supposed to be getting dressed... room service will be here soon!] he chided himself. He took a few steps to retrieve his white muscle shirt from the floor. "To answer your question... no, I don't get *feelings* often," he said, pulling the shirt over his head. He straightened and looked back into his lover's intense pale blue eyes. "In fact, I've never connected with anyone this way before."

The statement went straight through Zechs, and he blinked as if there had been a quantum shift somewhere around him. "Yes..." he murmured, but he wasn't sure what that was in answer to. It just was, just as Duo was perhaps his answer as well. He looked down briefly at the red t-shirt in his hands, folded military-neat. Red was his favorite color, but also the color of his OZ uniform jacket. The more blue-blooded OZ officers often customized their uniform jackets, even to the colors, but not a one wore something as flashy as Zechs's red. He blinked again and then pulled the shirt on, freeing his hair to flow down his back again.

Then he looked over into Duo's wondering gaze again, into the cobalt depths so like the deepest part of the ocean. "Neither have I," he finished quietly and honestly.

"Really? That is something then..." Duo said simply, scratching his head in wonderment.

"Yes, it is," Zechs murmured, extending his hand to him. When Duo took it, he led them over to a sofa where they sat to await their dinner. Duo immediately perched on one end cushion, drawing up his knees before him and wrapping his arms around them as if his intention was to take up the least amount of space. Zechs sat in a rather more sprawled manner, one leg up and bent, the other foot on the floor as he sat partially facing Duo, his arms laying along the back of the sofa and the curve of the end. He chuckled, and reached for one of Duo's hands to pull him closer. "Come here, Dancer," he whispered in a low voice.

Duo grinned and literally crawled over to him, leaning against the upraised knee and sitting partially turned to Zechs as well, hugging just one knee before him. [There's that feeling again...] Duo thought as the sensation flittered away before he could make sense of it. He tilted his head a little and peered up into Zechs's face, "Is something on your mind?"

One long-fingered hand came out to tease at the chestnut tendrils cascading over Duo's face. "Yeah, there is, Dancer. You see," Zechs explained, sobering a little, "I'm thinking that I should tell the man that I might be falling in love with a little more about myself... maybe a lot more." [And if he knew it all, would he run screaming? After all, he could be from the Middle East nations himself - they've resisted the Alliance a long time. Or he could be a pacifist...]

"Falling in love?" Duo asked his eyes glazing in disbelief. [The river...] "I'm falling, too, Zechs," he admitted and dipped his head slightly to hide his eyes behind his bangs. When he looked back up, Zechs's gaze was still on him and his hand still caressing his hair. "I'd like to know more about you," Duo said rather naively and then thought, [but there's so much I can't tell him. It isn't fair.]

Zechs smiled at his little lover, feeling a rush of warmth for him. Then the smile eased and he grew serious, for what he would say could drive Duo from him. Not that he felt he could admit it all - he definitely did not want his beautiful little Dancer to know he was the ace mobile suit pilot for OZ. "Duo," he began, one hand remaining to cup the boy's cheek, "I am at a crossroads in my life.... my work. I know, I'm rather young for such a thing, but there it is. I have taken... steps already to change the path that I have been on. The decision... is made." [There,] he thought. [And now it is. Gundams or not, I'm leaving OZ.]

Taking a deep breath, he plunged on. "Finding you has helped me solidify that decision, Duo. Please understand... I began the work I'm doing for a reason... but that reason has ended. And... things have changed to where I can no longer be a part... of that." Zechs sighed, seeing that his lover was only growing more confused.

The words were filled with warmth and sincerity and Duo followed along as best he could, knowing his eyes were wide with confusion. Whatever Zechs was trying to say was difficult for him, so the younger man gave a little smile of encouragement.

[I'm talking in circles...] Zechs decided to come right out with it. "Duo... I'm a soldier. But now I will leave that life."

[Soldier?!] Duo's mind stuck on the word. He blinked several times and pulled back out of Zechs's touch. "Huh?" The younger man's heart began to pound in his chest as all his training flooded back. [Who's he been fighting for?] The question hung heavy, but Duo didn't want to hear what his head and conditioning were telling him. [No... I love him. It doesn't matter.]

Duo's reaction sent a flood of fear through Zechs sharper than any he'd felt since fearing for his very life when he first flew Tallgeese. [Damn, I was afraid of this; he abhors war... and all those associated with it.] His heart began to pound. [Now what? I can't lose him already...]

Duo shook the warning off and then suddenly noticed the pain in Zechs's eyes. [Oh, he thinks I'm rejecting him!] He took Zechs's hands in his and began to rub them gently. "I'm sorry... I wasn't expecting you to say that. But you're leaving that life now?"

Zechs looked down at their hands, stunned for a moment that Duo was actually touching him again. "Y...yes," he said with hesitation. "Things... have changed. I can no longer continue as I am." [That is, with OZ... I must still fight, however, fight to stop the chaos that OZ is bringing to Earth and now surely to outer space. If only I could get the Gundam pilots to let me work with them...] "I have to leave... the organization."

[A soldier... in an organization?,] Duo thought hesitantly and slowed his rubbing of Zechs's hands. "You don't need to say anymore, Zechs," the younger man's voice and eyes pleaded. [Please don't say anymore. I'm afraid of what you might say. And I want to believe you're just a soldier taking orders... right?] Duo threaded his fingers with Zechs's, needing more of a physical connection, something to anchor him against the tiny tremors of misgiving that still nudged at his brain. "You seem like a very together guy... It must be pretty bad for you to consider that."

"Together..." Zechs made a little self-derisive snort at the word. "It must seem so. And... bad? I think so, yes... at least there are directions being taken which I cannot follow, not in good conscience." He bent his head, resisting the sorrow which flooded his soul, and brought their joined hands up, kissing the pale knuckles of the hand in his. "Especially not now."

"I wonder... you've mentioned me a couple of times," Duo began, looking up with his large cobalt blue eyes. "It's not like I can offer you a job or anything..." [Like I could hire him to help me hide my Gundam from OZ.] The younger man was at a loss for what Zechs needed from him. It wasn't like people came to him with their troubles often... or ever. "Maybe you just need someone who'll listen... I can do that... but I'd like to know what you need right now?"

[A job!] Zechs was touched deeply by the little man's thoughtfulness. He smiled, continuing to stroke his cheek. "I don't need a job, sweet Duo," he replied, returning the gaze with warmth. "And you have listened... and I have said enough. What I need right now is you in my arms..." and he leaned forward and collected Duo into the circle of his own arms, nuzzling his cheek with his nose. "I need this more than anything. You give me courage and strength, Duo... just in being you... and in being here with me."

Duo let himself be surrounded in the taller man's embrace. "If this is what you need," he said wrapping his arms around Zechs's middle, "then I'm more than happy to give it." He rubbed affectionately at the other man's chin and jawline with his nose and sighed with a contented grin on his face. "And there's nowhere else I'd rather be right now than here in your arms."

"Oh, Dancer," Zechs breathed, matching the smile as he hugged Duo closer, kissing his face and rubbing his nose with his as well. "This is what I need, and this is definitely where I want to be right now, too, nowhere else!" He caressed Duo's back, petting him, inhaling his scent... feeling closer to this magical little spirit than he'd ever imagined possible. "Thanks so much for not stalking out... when I told you."

"I wouldn't do that to you, Zechs," Duo said, kissing Zechs's face in return. He reached up and pulled some of that glorious platinum hair forward and then sat back with bright eyes to study Zechs's face. "You're so powerful and beautiful like..." He stopped his thought, tilted his head, and then with a sudden, pleased realization announced with a huge grin, "Like a big, cuddly snow wolf!" With a laugh he took Zechs into a tight embrace.

Watching the animated face and actions of his Dancer, Zechs felt enthralled. He, too, laughed with delight as they hugged. "I'm a snow wolf?" he asked, incredulous. [How did I manage to find him?] he thought yet again. [What a sweet, precious gift he is...]

When Duo pulled out of the embrace enough to look at Zechs again he was still smiling from ear to ear. "Yeah, it just hit me all of sudden. A snow wolf... but I think I'll just call you Wolf!" And then he dove at Zechs to take his mouth in an eager and happy kiss.

Suddenly presented with Duo's avid tongue in his mouth, Zechs responded immediately and fervently, tangling his tongue with Duo's, holding him tight against his body. [I'm falling in love... and I'm going to let it happen,] Zechs knew then, his heart singing.

The kiss was warming the younger man's body nicely... his cock beginning to harden again. And then they were suddenly startled out of their passionate embrace by a knock at the door. Duo looked at Zechs as though they'd been found out and then remembered, "Oh, it's our dinner!" He grinned and felt the hunger in his belly again. With one last quick kiss to Zechs's moist lips, Duo hopped off the sofa and jogged across the room to open the door. A young man in a simple linen shirt, pants and vest pushed the room service cart into the room.

Getting up off the sofa finally, Zechs stretched and then loped over to where Duo was checking over their order. "I'll sign for that - it's going on the room tab," the older man murmured, and signed the chit for the delivery boy. He tipped the boy with a few bills from the pocket of his linen pants retrieved from the floor, then went to close the door after the boy skipped out.

"Oh, this looks very good," Duo grinned and began arranging the food on the table as he popped a soft date into his mouth. "And I'm paying for half of this," he said while chewing, not wanting Zechs to think he was freeloading.

Zechs paused for but a second. "That's fine, thank you," he replied easily as he unpacked the plates and flatware that were provided. [I'm used to paying for everything,] he mused as he handed Duo a plate. [But then people usually are happy to let me...]

Duo wasn't shy about loading his plate with all the goodies he'd ordered. A couple skewers of lamb souvlaki, scoop of hummus with pita bread, falafel... and more dates, of course. He glanced over to see Zechs opening the bottle of red wine that came with the meal. The older man poured him a glass first and handed it him. "Thank you," Duo said and took his bounty over to the sofa to indulge.

After filling his plate, Zechs set it beside the glass of wine he'd poured for himself and stood there for a moment before glancing over at Duo who was happily sprawled on the sofa munching away. A small smile came over his face and he relaxed. [Relax, man, you're not in Bremen or anything,] he told himself as he picked up his plate and glass and sauntered over to join his companion. [No need for formal dining with this one!]

"So, Duo, if you won't mind my asking," Zechs murmured as he settled on the couch, balancing his plate on his folded knee up on the cushion. "Is there anything you'd like me to know about your life?" He took a sip of wine, and winked at him. "Any deep and dark secrets I should know?" [Not that anything he could tell me will make a difference,] he thought.

The younger man swallowed a piece of lamb with a gulp. [Does he know I'm a Gundam pilot?] But Zechs's wink told him his lover was only being playful. [It's good I worked out a cover story ahead of time...] "Sure I could tell you all about my adventures as a high-tech mechanic," he snickered. It was only a partial lie. He was skilled enough to make repairs to his Gundam, and his life was an adventure. "I've done a lot of traveling lately... spent time in the colonies and now I'm taking a break." [Some break. More like forced into hiding or be killed by those OZ bastards!]

He dipped his finger into the hummus, smearing some on his pita bread and licking the rest off his forefinger. He felt eyes on him... and looked up to see Zechs's ice blue eyes filled with desire and mild amusement. "Should've used a knife I guess," Duo laughed, and then he became more serious to say, "I'm not used to having anyone around. I've been on my own a long time."

[And I'm used to far more formal... and tedious... manners,] Zechs thought ironically. [Hmmm, mechanic...] He paused in his sampling of falafel, suddenly far more interested in his companion than his food... which wasn't difficult. Not only was Duo utterly fascinating to listen to and watch, but also Zechs was normally a bit oblivious to food, being pretty strict about maintaining his weight so that he remained at his maximum combat strength. He had to, to fly Tallgeese.

"That's okay, I don't mind. So, with all that traveling," Zechs offered casually, "it sounds like you have no lack of work." He kicked himself mentally; he wanted to ask if Duo had ever worked on mobile suits, but that would be far too revealing. [Oh, if only I could take him to Antarctica with me when we transfer Gundam 01 there - I know Meiser would be ecstatic to have another engineer to assist. And I wouldn't have to lose him when we leave here...]

"Yeah, nothing like being in demand," Duo grinned and gave a little snort. He didn't like playing this game with Zechs. He wanted this to be real... was beginning to hope that Zechs would actually want to be with him on a more permanent basis. And fudging the truth was no way to begin a long lasting relationship.

He looked down at his plate, pushing the food around. "I was orphaned when I was four," he said, turning wide, vulnerable eyes to the other man. "It was tough for a while... I lived on the streets." And then, recognizing how serious he'd become he smiled at Zechs. "But that's the past... and things have turned out pretty good in my life. Hey... I even met you!"

"And I'm very glad for that..." Trailing off, Zechs found himself staring, or rather, tracking Duo's every movement... but he was listening. Setting his plate and glass on the floor, he edged over toward Duo and took the half-eaten piece of pita bread from the boy's plate. "You're not eating," he observed, and as Duo gaped at him in surprise, Zechs smeared hummus on it and held it up for his companion to take a bite. "And you should eat. You don't mind if I help, do you?" [So, he's an orphan! That explains a great deal,] he thought even as he yielded to his baser impulse.

"Uh... okay," Duo blinked. No one had ever offered to feed him... and from the way Zechs was looking at him this was bound to lead to more than just finishing the food on his plate. He leaned forward, a little self consciously, and took a bite of the pita and hummus with his lover's watchful crystal eyes on him. "Mmmm..." He chewed the piece and swallowed. "It tastes even better like this," he said with a smile.

Zechs smiled at Duo's reaction, pleased, then continued with more hummus on the pita as he spoke. "I was orphaned, too," he murmured, feeding Duo another bite, his eyes absorbed in drinking in the sight of Duo eating from his hand. It was incredibly erotic. "So I've had to assume more adult responsibilities early on as well. Hmmm..." Zechs handed Duo his glass of wine so he could take a sip.

Duo curled his hand around Zechs's as the glass was raised to his lips. "So, we're both orphans..." he said and sipped the red elixir, never taking his eyes from Zechs's heated gaze. "Another connection between us." He ran his tongue over his lower lip, tasting the last drops of wine and tantalizing his lover.

Smiling - and still holding his gaze - Zechs nodded, watching the flick of Duo's tongue tease him. "Many ways to be connected, Duo," he murmured as he set the glass aside and took up a skewer of grilled lamb chunks from the boy's plate. "Being orphans means we have had to make our connections since those were taken from us." [Even Relena was taken from me...] Zechs inhaled the fragrant spicy aroma appreciatively and held the skewer for Duo to take a bite. "Mmmm, the lemon and oregano is very fresh..." [I would be connected to him... for a long time...]

The younger man watched as Zechs held the souvlaki before him with a steady hand. He couldn't help but be reminded of something more intimate they'd done earlier as he leaned forward and pulled one of the grilled squares of meat from the skewer. Zechs seemed to like eye contact, so Duo kept his gaze as steady as possible.

"Mmm-hmm," he approved, wiping the morsel's juices from the edge of his mouth with his fingers. Indeed the delicacy was fresh and very well prepared. He chewed and swallowed, never letting his eyes stray. "You're not eating. Isn't my Wolf hungry?"

"Very," Zechs whispered huskily, then captured Duo's wrist gently, drawing his hand to his mouth. Still gazing intently at him, he cleaned the juices from his lover's fingers, licking the excess from them avidly. "Starving," he added, one corner of his mouth curving up.

"Oh..." Duo said as he watched his hand be drawn to the other man's mouth. "Wolf... Uh...nnnn..." he mumbled with a shiver even as his body temperature was rising at the incredibly erotic sensation of having his fingers licked. [I want him... badly]. If not for the plate in his lap, Duo's growing excitement would be all too noticeable. "I won't be finishing my dinner at this rate..." he said with pinking cheeks.

[This is *too* much fun,] Zechs thought, all but breaking out into a grin. [He's just so utterly fascinating... he's actually blushing!] "*I* will be," he teased, then before Duo could reply, he popped a falafel in the younger man's mouth. By now, Zechs was close enough to slip his left hand around Duo's waist, increasing their physical closeness.

[I'm *his* dinner?!] Duo thought with mild shock and then realized how delicious that would be... to be consumed by this extraordinary man. He finished his falafel, trying to enjoy the delicacy, but was distracted by the dreamy look in Zechs's eyes.

Zechs leaned in and claimed Duo's mouth to taste what he'd just eaten, the exotic spices lingering on his tongue. It was a slow, sensual kiss with perhaps a new element that seemed to be present... for it was also a loving kiss. Then Zechs was straightening, pulling off. He placed a date in Duo's mouth to make up for ending the kiss so soon. "Delicious," he murmured, adding a few little nose caresses to his blushing little lover's face.
