"The Eve" The snow was wet, almost sticky the way it splattered in globs on the windshield and piled up as the wipers pushed it aside. Duo and Heero had been on the road a couple of hours, having stayed at the security conference later than they should with the weather forecast suddenly calling for heavy snow. "What exit is it?" Heero's tone was barely neutral. He hadn't been keen on this side trip up the mountain from the start. He'd finally agreed just the day before the conference to extend the weekend with some snowboarding before heading back to Bremen for Christmas. "121B. Should be in ten miles. The lodge is another fifteen after that." "Hn." The resort wasnt actually that far from the convention center where the Intergovernmental Security Enforcement Conference had been held. That's how Duo had gotten the idea. They'd fly in for the conference and rent a car to drive back to Bremen through the mountains. It seemed like a great idea to take an extra day off for the holiday and unwind after months of seemingly endless work. Too bad the weather wasn't cooperating. Heero hadn't taken his eyes from the road in quite some time, or his hands from the steering wheel. The speed they were traveling had steadily dropped from 65 mph to 40 to 30, and that was even starting to feel too fast. Not that Heero Yuy had trouble with less than optimal conditions, they'd both seen worse fighting in space, but they weren't in a Gundam now. This was a plain old motorized sedan with no booster propulsion and no special treads just a 6-cylinder engine and four all-weather tires. Lights from a diner and adjacent motel blinked at them through the nearly white-out conditions. Duo stared at the neon signs and the vehicles covered in snow as they drove past. Seemed folks had gotten the word to stay off the roads. And so should they. "Hey, maybe we should pull over." Heero flicked him a quick glance. "Back there?" "Yeah. This is getting stupid." Heero answered by taking his foot off the accelerator and carefully making a big U-turn on the highway. It felt like they were moving in slow motion, but Heero was doing a remarkable job keeping the car and them out of the ditch. As they pulled into the parking lot, they realized just how much snow had been falling. The lot hadn't been plowed, and there was no use kidding themselves that they'd be going any further tonight. "Might as well get a room," Duo said. But first they needed to get out of the car and into the motel's lobby. The wind had picked up and when Duo stepped out of the car the snow came up to the bottom of his knees. He pulled the hood up on his standard-issue Preventers' coat and hunkered down to make a run for it. The wind whipped around him as he reached the lobby door and nearly stumbled inside with Heero right behind him, the cold and the snow following them. Once they got the door closed, they looked around to see some of the guests sitting near a television in the lounge area, and a clerk behind the desk. Duo trudged over to the desk. "Got a room?" "One left. Only one bed though," the man said, looking between Duo and Heero. Duo shrugged. At this point he really didn't care. He got his wallet out of his back pocket and handed over a credit card. With key in hand, they steeled themselves for another winter blast and headed back to the car to grab their bags. They could see now that they had done the sensible thing getting off the road. Heero unlocked the car's trunk and grabbed both duffels. With an arm shielding his eyes, he led the way to Room 112. Duo pushed past him and unlocked the door. The wind blew the door from his hand, slamming it against the wall. They stepped inside and quickly got the door shut, shivering against the cold. As he peeled back his hood, Duo stared at the one bed. "At least it's a double wide." Heero dropped their bags on the floor and turned for the door. "Want to eat?" "Yeah, sure," Duo said. He gave himself a mental kick for not offering to sleep in the chair. Following Heero across the parking lot to the diner, Duo made sure to step into each of Heero's footsteps, which made it somewhat easier to brave the ridiculous amount of snow that had accumulated. The diner was packed with stranded travelers, but there was a booth open in the back near the bathrooms. One of the waitresses cocked her head towards it as she carried a tray of hot meals. "Seat yourselves boys, I'll be right there." "Thanks," Duo said, and followed the wet trail of snow dripping off Heero as he walked to the booth. They slid in on either side of the table and shrugged out of their coats. "Damn," Duo said, looking out the window at the worsening conditions. "I'm sure the forecast did not mention this." "Hn." Heero had taken the menus from a metal holder, placing one in front of Duo and opening the other. Duo opened his, half staring at Heero and half reading the daily specials. "The chicken parmesan sandwich sounds good." "I'm getting a burger." Heero closed his menu and placed it back in the holder, his eyes gazing out at the snow. "I guess we should've flown back." Heero shook his head. "We'd be worse off. The airport is closed by now." "That'd suck, huh? Stuck in an overcrowded airport with crappy fast food." The waitress appeared to take their orders. Duo ordered fried mozzarella for them to share and that chicken parmesan sandwich. He needed the comfort of deep fried, greasy food and it wasn't just because of the weather. An arctic chill was radiating from Heero, too. There was an elephant in the room that neither of them wanted to mention and it was in the shape of that motel room with the one double-wide bed. They were partners. They'd worked together since the end of the war, ten years ago. They'd gotten a little older and a hell of a lot better at stopping the bad guys, and their friendship had grown. They'd slipped into an easy pattern backing each other up on missions, and hanging out occasionally after work or on the weekend. Every so often someone would ask, "Why do you guys spend so much time together?" Most understood that the ex-Gundam pilots' shared experiences had created a unique bond, but even when they did socialize outside their circle, people treated them a little differently. Maybe it was a crutch to be together so much, but it made life easier in many ways. Duo played the nosey comments down, trying to contain them as much as possible so they wouldn't spook Heero. He'd accepted his relationship with Heero as a friendship and a partnership, and nothing more. Getting fresh was out of the question. For years, Duo had tried innuendos and subtle clues, but Heero had never given any indication he was receptive to that sort of thing. So fine, that's where things had settled. But the rumors kept getting louder and more persistent until they came to a head yesterday. During one of the conference breaks when the hallways were packed with attendees, Duo had rounded a corner on a conversation that should not have been. Three fellow Preventers and a couple of young recruits to the diplomatic corps were gossiping about him and Heero. Have you noticed that Agent Maxwell and Agent Yuy are always together? They're like schoolgirls. They can barely go to the bathroom without the other in tow Duo's temper had flared and he cut into their circle, determined to put an end to the malicious talk. "Hey, where do you get off saying that?" He thought they'd back down, getting caught red-handed, but Agent Weiler grinned mischievously. "Come on, why don't you own up to it already? You two are shagging each other." Duo gritted his teeth. He couldn't let these rumors fan out of control. Field agents had to be in top form and couldn't let anything put them off their game. "There's nothing to own up to, and it's none of your God damn business what we do." "What's none of their business?" a familiar voice asked. Duo spun around, eyes wide as he took in the sight of Heero standing just feet away. He opened his mouth to divert the conversation in another direction, but Weiler was quicker. "Everyone's talking about it how you and Maxwell are an item." Heero's brow furrowed, but he didn't reply. "It's bullshit, Heero. They're just envious of our track record. We don't have to listen to this." Duo took a step toward him, but Heero held up his hand. "This is the sort of thing that brings a team down," Heero said. "When you can't trust each other." "That's right," Weiler said. "And maybe you two trust each other a bit too much." "Yeah, you're even sharing a room at the conference." Another agent added. "Hey, that's a cost saving measure!" Duo protested. Heero took a step towards Weiler. "We're not your entertainment, Agent Weiler. Get another pastime." He turned and headed in the direction of the grand ballroom where he was about to present a paper on weapons containment. Duo wanted to run after him, apologize for the knuckleheads who couldn't stand that two former Gundam pilots had risen in the ranks so quickly, but he took a few steps and stopped. What would that look like? Would they think he was chasing after his boyfriend to console him? It was a sad state of affairs, and now they were sharing a motel room with one bed, and Heero had barely said fifty words to him since that gossip session the day before. The mozzarella sticks were brought to the table, along with their cold drinks. Duo tucked into the food immediately, glad for the distraction, while watching Heero stare out the window at the storm. Heero seemed reluctant to take his eyes from the snow, but he turned his attention back to Duo and the appetizer, picking up a fried mozzarella stick and blowing on it before taking a bite. Duo hated when there was tension between them. Heero could be difficult to read, and even more difficult to pull out of his shell. The war had made them unlikely partners, but it was their time in Preventers that had conditioned their partnership into a well-oiled machine. He grabbed his soda. "Sorry I couldn't diffuse things yesterday." "Diffuse what?" "Those jerks and their stupid rumors you know." He took a long sip of his cola and watched Heero's gaze drift to the window again. "They're idiots," Heero said, tapping the glass with his knuckles. "You said it. So what if we shared a room at the conference? There were two beds! It's not as if" "I wish it were true." "Huh?" Duo asked while sipping more of his drink. "We've known each other a long time," Heero said, turning his eyes to Duo. "It'd be nice if the rumors were true." Duo spit cola over his hand and onto the table. "W-what?" Heero sighed and leaned back. "All these years I thought it wouldn't work. We couldn't be partners and ." "What?" Duo nervously grabbed some napkins and wiped the table. Heero couldn't possibly be saying what he prayed to God he was saying. "Partners and lovers, of course." Duo gasped and something went the wrong way down his wind pipe. He started coughing, sputtering as his eyes teared and his heart pounded. Had Heero said lovers? Just then, the waitress arrived with their dinners. "One black and blue burger special, and one chicken parmesan sandwich. You boys need anything else?" They shook their heads, but she paused as she looked at Duo. "You okay, hon?" "W-wrong pipe." "As long as you can breathe everything will be okay." She turned and was gone. Yeah, as long as I can breathe, Duo thought. But his heart was still pounding madly against his chest. He took a long drink of his cola and set it down, staring fully at his ever stoic partner. "H-Heero, you shouldn't joke like that. Those rumors" "I'm not joking." "Then don't jack me around," Duo said, almost angrily. He'd crushed on Heero too long, grappled with those messy feelings for years, and really couldn't handle it if Heero didn't mean it. "Maybe your feelings have changed," Heero said, somewhat quietly. "It has been nearly a year since you dropped the last hint." Duo blinked. So he had noticed the hints? And what had happened nearly a year ago? "Oh, Quatre and Trowa's renewal of their vows?" Heero nodded. "At the reception you said you wished we could be that happy." "Did I?" His friends' party had been held between Christmas and New Years last year, coinciding with their marriage anniversary and the anniversary of the end of the Eve Wars, a time of significance for all of them. "Damn, I must have had one too many champagne cocktails." "If that's all it was" "No," Duo said, quickly. "I do wish we could be as happy as Quatre and Trowa, but I've accepted that it's not possible. I mean, I never thought you wanted ." His face warmed, embarrassed and afraid he was saying too much and he was totally misreading this conversation. Heero reached across the table and grasped Duo's hand. "We were young and had a job to do. There was no time to think about anything more." "Like being lovers?" Duo gulped, still fearing he had misunderstood. "Yes." "But you're talking about it now and we've still got a job to do." "Yesterday, the way you argued with Weiler, I thought that maybe you'd gotten tired of waiting. That you weren't interested anymore." Duo shook his head. "Wait a minute, you've known all along how I feel and never said anything?" "It took me awhile to catch on." Heero sighed and looked to the window and the layer of ice building up on the glass. "We were 15 when we met. What was I supposed to do?" "You liked me back then?" Heero nodded. Duo's mouth dropped open and he stared at Heero, completely blown away by this news. Heero Yuy had liked him for the past ten years! "Why are you telling me this now?" Heero didn't answer immediately, and Duo started to get nervous again, but he bit his tongue. Sometimes Heero took a minute to compose his thoughts, but usually that meant he had something to say that Duo wouldn't like. "What you said got me to thinking. Maybe you're right and it's not anyone's business. Maybe we're old enough to handle this." "This?" "Being partners and lovers." "I've waited a long time to hear you say that, but coming from you it's crazy talk." Heero grinned. "Maybe it is and maybe we should get this dinner to go." Duo's eyes widened and his pulse quickened again. "I'm gonna need a moment for this to sink in." Heero signaled for the waitress, who clearly thought they were nuts to leave with a doggy bag in the middle of a blizzard. Duo took a couple of bites of his sandwich before she slid it and the complementary fries off the plate and into a container. With bag in hand and the meal paid for, they steeled themselves for that first blast of the winter storm and headed back outside. This time, Duo walked alongside Heero as best he could. Their footprints from earlier were gone, but that was okay. Making fresh tracks made it feel like they were forging a new path in their lives. Duo was nervous by the time they stepped inside the motel room, but he didn't have a chance to fret about what they would do or who should make the first move. The door was barely shut when Heero pinned him against it, his lips locking with Duo's. The kiss was fierce and impatient, a manifestation of wasted time and raging hormones. Heero wasn't shy about letting Duo feel his strength, his eagerness as he pressed him to the door, holding Duo's face in his hands and devouring his mouth. It was brilliant and surreal to be kissing after years working side-by-side and longing for more. Duo wanted the kiss to go on and on, but first he needed a lungful of oxygen. He pressed his gloved hands to Heero's shoulders and pushed back just enough to get a few words out amid the kisses, "Gotta let me breathe." Heero pulled back infinitesimally, also gasping for breath. "I didn't realize you'd taste this good." "That's just the chicken parmesan!" Duo chuckled. Heero shook his head. "No, it's not." Thinking more time was wasting he grabbed Duo and hauled him over to the bed. They sat down hard and started to peel off layers of clothescoats, ties, and shirtsall while kissing. "We really gonna do this?" "Yes," Heero said, pushing Duo back onto the bed and reaching for Duo's belt. Then suddenly he stopped and looked into Duo's eyes. "Unless you don't want to." "I want to, I want to," Duo said, practically begging Heero to continue. "But for years you've talked about focus and eliminating distractions. Wont' this be a huge distraction?" Heero rested his hand on Duo's bare chest. "You've been distracting me for years." "Yeah, and you've been distracting me, too and I think it'd be worse now knowing how you feel." Heero grinned and leaned down until his nose touched Duo's. "We might need some ground rules for missions, but let's work that out later " He covered Duo's mouth with his, letting his tongue slip inside. It heated his entire body to be this close to Duo, to be thinking about the things he wanted to do to him and know it could actually happen. His hands worked Duo's belt off and slacks open. He reached inside, curling his hand around Duo's cock. It was hard and perfect in his grasp and touching it made Heero impossibly hard. He'd never had sex, and as far as he knew, Duo had never done it either, but Heero wasn't worried about the mechanics of coupling. It was the most natural thing in the world, and besides he'd seen a porn movie or two that had left nothing to the imagination. All Heero wanted was to get Duo naked, and not the locker room kind of naked when you're chatting and changing clothes. He needed Duo to be the kind of sexy, sweaty naked that had filled his dreams and fed his desires for his partner and friend. Heero moved down Duo's body, kissing his chest and settling between his thighs. Without warning, he licked Duo's cock and then sucked it into his mouth. Duo cried out and grabbed Heero's hair. His back arched off the bed as Heero pleasured him and explored him with his mouth. Duo's mewls were intermixed with curses, begging Heero for more. The scent of Duo filled his nostrils and reminded him that this was no longer just a fantasy. He had Duo writhing beneath him, filling his mouth, and wanting more. Duo couldn't last, not the way Heero was working his cock. Damn, had the boy been practicing on bananas? Heero was in complete control, sucking him down, swallowing around him, making Duo's cock feel like the center of the universe. And then Duo exploded, coming in Heero's mouth, crying out with unbelievable pleasure. "Yes, yes, Heero!" Heero pulled his mouth off Duo with one last lick, and set about getting the rest of their clothes off in a hurry. "God, Heero " Duo said near breathless, as he slid out of his slacks. Heero's brain had disengaged from conversation. All he could think about was how badly he wanted his cock up Duo's ass. He hoped to hell that Duo wouldn't mind bottoming, because he didn't want that to be an issue for their first time. Once they were both naked, Heero made a point of rolling on top of Duo. Duo chuckled in his ear. "I get it." "That obvious?" "Oh, yeah." Duo flicked his tongue out, sensually exploring Heero's ear. "You win this time." It didn't surprise him that Duo wanted to top, too. Their relationship had always been a tug-o-war. They'd been playing at who's on top for ten years. Why should it be any different between the sheets? Though, Heero grinned, there was something quite satisfying about taking the lead where Duo Maxwell was concerned. Duo wasn't the sort of young man who acquiesced easily, and yet he'd been quietly acquiescing to Heero for years. Hadn't he? Perhaps more surprising was that Heero had been acquiescing to Duo as well. No wonder those rumors had persisted. Heero licked his fingers and pressed one to Duo's opening. Even in his excitement, he had the sense to be gentle at first. Every step of the way, every first touch was a marvel, and reaffirmed that they had made the right decision. They had long shared a bond, and now their chemistry was just as evident. In moments, Heero was slicking his hard sex with saliva. He mumbled about needing lubricant for the next time as every cell in his body focused on this moment of joining. He pressed his cock to Duo's opening, the head slipping inside, and the great sensation causing Heero to hold his breath. He pushed forward as he rubbed his cheek against Duo's and kissed his lover's face. At last, he felt himself fully inside Duo. He closed his eyes, stilling himself, absorbing the feelings and trying to calm his racing heart. "Okay," Duo said, softly. "It feels good." Heero breathed out, relieved. "Can I move?" "Yeah." Duo gave a little thrust. There was no more thinking after that, not that there had been much for the last several minutes. Their bodies took over, moving with one another, easily finding a pleasing rhythm. They kissed and touched as the fucking got more intense, and the winter storm with it. The sound of strong winds blowing snow against the window blended with their moans and the creak of the bed. The winter chill found its way under a narrow gap at the bottom of the door, but its caress soothed their heated skin. Somehow they'd known it'd be this good. Maybe that was why they had waited. They needed the maturity to handle this hunger in order to balance it with their work. Duo wrapped his legs around Heero's thighs, embracing him and encouraging him to give it to him as hard and as long as he wanted. He loved Heero, but until this moment he had never admitted that to himself. The pleasure of this lovemaking filled him inside and out, his heart overjoyed and his body on fire with deep lust and love. Heero thrust and shoved into Duo, grunting and breathing heavy in his ear. This moment had been destined since they had met at 15, but it took surviving two wars and many, many dangerous missions with Preventers to get here. Heero wanted more, wanted all Duo would give, and pounding Duo's ass was certainly a great way to begin. The need built quickly and too soon release was upon them, bursting and tingling through their bodies almost in the same instant. They called out each other's name, and held each other tight as the last of their orgasms rippled through them. Heero collapsed on Duo, breathless and in awe. He wanted to lie here for minutes on end, but had enough wits about him to gently roll off his lover. Duo immediately curled along Heero's side, hooking a leg over his. "Fuck that was great." Heero chuckled. All he could manage was, "Hn," before falling asleep. The howling wind woke them with a start hours later. Duo lifted his head to peer at the digital clock on the night stand. "How late is it?" Heero asked. "12:01." It was after midnight already? Damn, that had been a peaceful few hours of sleep. "It's Christmas Eve," Duo said, sitting up in bed. Heero opened his eyes and looked up at Duo who was scratching the back of his head. His hair was mussed, his braid a mess, and he looked absolutely edible with the dim glow of the parking lot light peeking through the curtains. He reached for Duo's hand and pulled him down. Duo landed across his chest and then snuggled his face into Heero's neck. "Mmm, nice," Duo said. "Somehow most of the significant events in my life have been on an eve." Duo lifted his head several inches and looked into Heero's eyes. "Tonight was one of them?" "Tonight and the end of the wars, and the last time you dropped any hints." Duo chuckled. "So, you think we can be as happy as Quatre and Trowa?" "Happier." "Oh?" Duo raised his eyebrows, skeptical of such a feat. "I've been happy at your side for a long time now, Duo. I've practically made a career of you, and now I've got you in my arms. What more could I ever hope for in life?" "Don't die a happy man just yet, okay?" Duo laughed. Heero shook his head. "This Eve is only the beginning." Heero's heart was so full in that moment he thought it might burst. What could be more perfect than to be stranded in a snowstorm with the lively and very sexy Duo Maxwell naked in his bed? "Happy Eve, Duo." "Happy Eve, Heero." Duo grinned as he pressed his lips to Heero's in a deep kiss. When he pulled back his smile was even bigger. "Where's that doggy bag? I'm starving!" ~ the end ~
